Shadows of Giants

By DESLRV on January 10, 2026 11:46 pm

This song was the product of the music theory behind Shadow of the Colossus. If last week was the title screen, this is surely the intro cinematic.

This trend won't last. Unless maybe next week's song sounds like it's in-game proper.

Reminds me I still need to play shadow of the colossus. Very cinematic and love the progression. the piano and the more chiptune stuff together is great.

Cakewalk love!  This is super cool.

NEW BIIIIRDZZZ!!! The chippy synth paired with the guitar works super duper well. Nicely done!

Golly I need to revisit the vibes of shadow of the colossus. This turned out great. Such vibes.

The chirpy synth on the wind is such a fun and unique layering. Love the piano too. Seems like the drums got a bit buried I wanted to hear them more

chirpy chip birds made me smile.

Smooth track! I like the birds.

Never played the game, so I won’t be able to relate on that axis. Still, I enjoyed the layering and processing of the guitar, piano, drums and synth track in the central piece! The »birds« would make very good video game sound effects, too!

those chirpy bird sounds are so cool! i love the droney sections too, really atmospheric

Stating again how cool the bird sounds are. I yearn for a version of thid track where you keep sprinkling then across the track, like ai did with the whale noises in mine. But, that spicey and weird layer of music was something learned from my teacher. Imo, after a few years of getting used to it, I love having things like the chippy bird sounds as an added unrelated layer existing almost unbothered by the normal layer underneath. I have a few songs with examples I could point out if you are ever interested.

The calming guitar sections are so nice, too.

A strange mix of instruments, but it somehow works really well. Love the harmonies!

I'm such a sound design fanatic that that intro was what really hooked me, the storytelling in that was so good. And the rest of the track was fire as well? Oooooooh boy!!

Inspiring! Gorgeous track

Still haven't played it myself, but I know the vibe

People seem all upity about the cakewalk business, I just think it's neat

The very cornerstone of chipmetal right there

Thank you, I remember him having fun adding all the little bits and bobs, like the decaying piano

Wind without birds is just wind, and that's boring
I don't think the drums were meant to be huge, more like ominous distant things, but I see what you mean, they indeed kinda disappeared

They're finally back

Same here, and they probably would
Thanks for listening

Same here, it's pretty ominous

For this, I don't think I'd want that sort of help, they're meant to be cinematic elements, there to be diegetic and to impart a sort of environmental message
Maybe you're disturbing them, or maybe they're warning you, maybe both

More people should do it, it'll be less strange

Seems like all the important bits landed then

Offering help doesn’t feel like my intention… You certainly don’t need to do anything that doesn’t feel right to you or your expression. If my idea is a flavor you want to try a different time, awesome.

Of note, the string of letters that spelt “ai” was a typo. I did not use ai to make whale noises. Just clearing that base because I noticed my comment reads different…

Not with the birds, they've never been an explicit instrument, rather they're stings, little flairs
You're free to do so tho, this song is set to allow remixes

ah, was wondering that

Dormin: [laughs] That track? tracks that are once lost cannot be reclaimed. Is that not the law of mortals? With that m8-tracker, however, it may not be impossible.

hell yais! da birds are back!  such a powerful chord progression in this.  I feel that grand cinematic opening with the pulse of the piano.  Well done!

Nice melodies with that mono synth.

And the birds, the birds!!!

More bird appreciation here, and for the sound design in general.  I don't hear much connection to SoTC, but a lot of its impact draws from its arrangement and direction (and, of course: that orchestra).

🏆

i don't pick favorites, but if i did this might be my fave track of yours.
the piano is a really nice tough and it all works together really well. cheers!

This is rad

a lot of mood in this one! and some subtle touches that do a lot of work.

What is an M8, a miserable little pile of secrets

birb
the chords are very simple, but no one expects the Gm to so smoothly go to G, also the guitar is just doing shit, because the piano never leaves G triads

thank you!
hell yea, birb

yea, no strings, no brass, but the structure is the same
also birb

it's certainly one of the songs of ours this year, we have quite the number tho, calling this the favorite is a very bold claim
also thank you

Hey, welcome! Cinematic, I like the guitar, birds are here? It was interesting to start the WB audio, then videos, 3 at once! Back to just the WB audio though, a nice journey.

I love the junction of sound design that contrast in terms of organic/artificial old/new, those chiprs are really neat

The guitar comes in, then the chiptune lead, reprising this effect... the progression and the melody alternates in mood and subverts my expectations, really engaging

The ambience at the end sounds really good too

Love the piano

Thank you
Birbs are back, yea
The videos are for consideration, the song should be enough to enjoy really

Wow you went above and beyond with the video showing your production

Awesome

You set the stage, very engaging and well paced.

The birds are back, and intense! And that growl is awesome. But not as awesome as our piano and guitar riff into big chiptune, the way this builds up is absolutely fantastic and it works so well! That drama right around the 2 minute mark and the builds.... oof.

And I love the atmospheric finish. Awesome.

I dunno a bout that, production is something that happens regardless, it's not like a music video, that takes effort

Many thanks

Thank you as well
I'm sure with the littlest effort it could be twice as long and have twice the build

R2D2 birds with the wind made me think that this song is kind of a science-fiction setup. Kind of like we're passing next to an asteroid in space and discover there's a diner there. We get a passing glimpse and then it's gone.

Personally, I agree with the comments that would like to hear the drums more forward. Aside from that, the arrangement works very well and all the chipmetal genre boxes are properly ticked. It's also tight rhytmically, good time keeping on the guitar. I liked this.

The chiptunesque melody is just perfect over that chord progression. Love it!

Fantastic. Absolutely LOVE the theme that comes in at the minute mark. Dark and driving and builds. Love how it fades out into the wind at the end.

the mood of that piano and guitar sound is awesome. And the raw sounds give a nice contrast to it all. Cool stuff!

It may very well be, sci-fi is pretty cool after all
The drums, I've found out, was a problem with the automation, which is fine, drums can be overrated at times and this has a good vibe so I've made peace with it
Nice to know we got rhythm, too

cortx wrote:

Was very easy to pull off, just have to be comfortable with a key change every fourth bar
no biggie

Piano and guitar, always a good combo

I went to watch the vid instead of the mp3 and then saw the length.  Haha.

Definitely an interesting blend of organic instruments and pure (triangle?) tones.  I really like the sound of the  guitar/piano blend.

Indeed, the video is the production process. Interesting bits if you're into that.

I don't think we're using triangles, unless you mean the birds.

Some nice rising and falling action.  Feels suitably epic.

Wow, thank you for sharing your humbling process. The final product great! The process, a reminder how much patience is sometimes needed to arrive at what you hear/sing inside.

Really love when the bass comes in and teases for a moment while the synth lead is playing, and sounds are building in the background. Nice one

Thank you so much!
I don't know about humbling, it's mostly just vibes, music theory, and a vague idea of what it's supposed to represent.
