This week I was rather productive on the musical side of life. I worked on multiple tracks that are now quite far in development. I think all the work on the weekly beats helps me break out of the endless looping that I usually do and focus on arrangement a bit earlier in the process. I also think ideas for arrangements come to me a bit more quickly now. I've also spent quite some time exploring music production on my Mega65 (which I acquired a long time ago, but did not do much with until now). Maybe that will lead to something I can share via weekly beats at some point.

So, I had multiple things that I considered submitting. I'll just keep most of them for weeks in which I am more rushed (in a folder called weekly cheats). The one I submit now is perhaps even the least developed one, in the sense that it doesn't have a good ending yet (currently, it just fades out, but I am not super happy with that yet). I am also unsure about the breakbeat in this one. Sometimes when I listen to it, it feels that a bit off. So please, let me know your thoughts on this!

Personally, I mostly liked to the lead on this one - it has something subtle about it that I like. Not sure if in the mix it is currently too subtle.

Strong opening drew me in. I don't know much about break breaks, so I can't really comment, other than I really liked this

The breaks sound fine. The timing sounds good. Maybe layer a fatter kick, or make transients pop, or make them more forward in the mix if you are going for a dance floor piece. But I think this works as is for your concept. The true superstar of this tune is that dark pad you debut at 12 secs. That's a perfect tone setter. I also enjoy the subtle pitching up of the lead at the breakdown.

Lol love the weekly cheats idea. Honestly the breakbeats are my favorite part of this one - really tight and crispy, and they keep everything interesting, and the way you bring them back in the second half is great. Nice job!

whoa, mega65 looks rad!  looking forward to any musical output with that

nice tune!
heart

loved this, the elements you keep adding and then the subtle drums!! very good, magical

love the break kicks in.  hypnotic vibes with the lead synth and revolving bass.  Really slick drums throughout and that lead synth really soars.  weekly cheats are essential fo sho.  even if you never use em it's nice having that extra cushion for the noggin of future weeks smile

weekly cheats haha, I love the honesty. Break beats sound good on my end, I really like the organic sound to them. Great song, excited to hear the other ones you’re hiding.

This is super dope. The breaks sound like good breaks to me smile. they have more of a laid back vibe, and I really like the variety of patterns you've programmed with them. That evolving bass synth is really going places too. Love the gradual shift through the sounds.

I love the mellow lead sound. The breaks feel a bit weightless and thin to me. And indeed with it, they also sound off to me, too. Think they could use some thumpier accents in time with the main lead sound to anchor them to tune. And maybe even be a bit quieter, or darker, maybe? I definitely agree that a proper ending would be better, yes. But I think the structure and overall development throughout the tune is good. Well worth polishing this one a bit further.

very cool beat and energy, catchy lil melodies. the sound of the lead synth is so good and mellow, you kinda wanna hear it louder but I think it's the PERFECT volume because it forces your ears to pay more attention and that just pulls you deeper into the groove. also great section without the drums, then they come back in again, BAM what we've all been waiting for. I guess the drums are a version of the amen break?!? solid.

Thank you! I started to dislike the opening myself (the part with just the bass). Good to read that you like it instead. smile

Thank you for the encouraging comments, as always!

Thanks! Making something with the Mega65 is going to take me a while. Also, since the music software for the Mega65 is still almost non-existent, I am mostly just running a Commodore 64 core with SID Wizard (a new version came out just this January). However, everything I made with it so far is pretty shit. Still learning smile.

Thank you both! Yeah, having the weekly cheats collections gives me some peace of mind. I've had one track in my back pocket for weeks already, just in case smile. However, I do try to make something every week anyway, to keep the juices flowing smile.

Thanks! This feedback is very helpful! I listened to the breaks again after reading this, and I now hear what you were hearing. For me they felt off more because of the timing. It sometimes starts to feel a bit jerky to me, but that is probably also a side effect of listening to the same loops over and over again. However, I am definitely going to try something to give the breaks a bit more thump and I think it is not a bad idea experimenting a bit more with the levels as well. And yeah, the ending is definitely not a keeper in my opinion. I am slowly starting to come to terms with the fact that this is an aspect of arrangements that I still need to develop more. That's a good challenge for upcoming weekly beats submissions. Thanks again for the constructive feedback!

Thank you! You describe perfectly how I feel about the lead. The drums are in fact not from the amen break. I need to check on my M8 where I got them from again (don't have it handy now). If you listen very closely, you might here a small trace of a saxophone that was part of the original track.

Nice, cohesive mover. Hard agree on the lead - it's smooth and different enough to stand out but not so much that it disrupts the feel of the track.

Okay, after I came home I checked and it is a break sampled from unwind yourself. I took it from a sample pack, but did some processing in Ableton, like warping and probably some other stuff. Sounds like the instrument in the break (hardly audible) might be something else than a sax. Not sure now.

this is great! love how the crisp beat works over the musical bed. hell yeah.

Sweet, you have a real knack for marrying super chill mellow synths with uptempo break beats.
You mentioned you're unsure about the sound of the break. If I were to take a guess it's slightly bright compared to all the warm sounding synths. Maybe slightly less bass reduction, while filtering out a bit of the top end to make it more lofi could make it sit a bit better with the rest of the track. It can still drive the track and provide the same amomunt of groove, even if it has a little bit less transient attack to it.
Anyway, love that lead and the way it slowly drifts into that huge stereo delay. Sweet track, nice work!

What's here is quite neat
