Catharsis

By ViridianLoom on February 1, 2026 11:22 pm

Boo!

I wanted to combine the slower paced instrumental ambient stuff I've been doing with metal. That, and continue to experiment. I'm pretty happy with the dynamics of this track. The vocals were super last minute, as I was waiting for my wife to go down to the park with our dog before I got to doing the death metal vocals (Born to scream, forced to wait for alone time).

I wrote a lot of these lyrics in the movie theater watching Iron Lung, lol. Not because it was boring or anything, quite the opposite actually. The movie was super atmospheric and reminded me a lot of Event Horizon's cosmic horror mixed with the oppressive atmosphere of Alien. Highly recommend. The lyrics aren't about the movie though and are actually a personal reflection.

This weekend was super awesome. I got to see my all-time favorite band, Kayo Dot, here in Tucson. I think the last time they performed here was back around 2008 or something crazy far back. The show was stellar and massively fucking inspiring. I brought as many friends as I could to experience it with me and we had a great time. I go to speak with Toby Driver at length for a while after the show too, and then my friends and I went out to a late night dinner to get some grub. I feel like I'm on cloud nine, I just had such a memorable time and it made me happy. I need to get together with my friends more often and get things going with getting a band together so I can start performing this music.

Amazing work, the song goes into so many beautiful spaces, and feels like the deepest of catharsis!
Congrats on reaching cloud nine on this, and I hope I get to see you and your band perform someday! heart

Holy crap!! The sound design, and those vocals are ATMOSPHERIC!!

Digging the gorgeous guitar tone around the ~1:06 mark! This is quite the journey. big_smile Never thought of writing lyrics at the movies, might have to give that a try sometime!

So stoked to hear about your amazing week! Thats awesome.

Very dynamic song. Great blend of genres!

Another level man. Taking me on a trip. Not at all the kind of music I usually listen to, and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it.

absolutely insane how good this is - the growls are incredible, the clean guitar chords are so emotionally deep

congrats on a great week too!

This was so good, guitar work was great and the screams were amazing. Nice track!

INSANITY. So good. Keep up the great work.

Very satisfying.

guitar section around 1:06 is so good.  that guitar at 3:56 oof! The background drones/winds add such a nice tension up until the guitars come growling in.  What a cinematic feel and trip this is! \m/

great stuff - love the guitar

This is one crazy track! What a journey! How long did it take you to compose this, with all the changes? Prog death metal in the best way!

I just received a big hit in the face with your hard parts!!!

So cool. The slugy part is probably my favourite one of the track, but I love those very nice arpegiated chords on the lighter parts. And your screams are awesome.

I hope we'll be able to do a collaboration later on this year!

Take care.

JP.

Slow burn, but definitely pays off, and in any case the journey is what counts anyway. I liked it all, no notes, five stars. Impressive growling, too.

BTW, I've only heard about Kayo Dot through Mia Matsumiya who used to play in Gregor Samsa, and I remember you said you've only heard about them through Toby 😅

Dude this is amazing! Love the contrast between the very heavy and the quiet somber parts. Was very impressed by the composition and the overall production of it. Really really well done! Love the incredible amount of contrast throughout! Very very good stuff!

One of these days, I'm going to put reverb on something. You use it so well. This whole song sounds so good. Love the growls, you really nailed them. And thanks for bringing me along to the show! It was an experience. Fog machines and all 🤣

This is so cool! Your mixing sounds phenomenal, and the two tones work so well together. Can't wait for more!

Thanks! For sure, cathartic in a multitude of ways. It was fun to scream and growl again (It's been a LONG time!)

Thanks! I used a bit crusher on the spoken word stuff which kind of achieved the desired effect of making my voice sound like it was coming through a radio with a bad speaker. And just slathered on that reverb for the death growls to make them sound cavernous >:)

Thanks so much! That's especially the kind of feedback I love to hear, because it tells me my music is crossing genre barriers and is still appreciated smile Some of my favorite artists write particularly challenging music where it's hard for them to appeal to a broader audience (just niche weirdos like myself), so I like the idea of trying to communicate similar ideas in a way that's maybe more digestible? And the ultimate dream is for my music to lead people towards those other bands that deserve the appreciation more than I do.

Technically like 14 years, lol. The whole first part of the song was structured 14 years ago when I first started getting into Kayo Dot, and then I felt like I wanted to revive this song and finish it up after seeing Kayo Dot this last weekend. The newest addition is the whole second half with sludgey death metal riffing inspired by Gorguts. That and the vocals/lyrics. I have so many songs that I wrote on guitar back in the day with the intent of turning them into full arrangements with a band but I never got around to it. Maybe I can start digging up all that shit this year.

The sludgy part is my favorite as well wink if you're interested in more music like that, I was inspired by Gorguts, maybe you'll dig em. And yes, I'll definitely be keeping you in mind throughout the year whenever I come up with an idea that I think might be a good fit.

I love Mia Matsumiya, haha. She was a critical part of Kayo Dot back in the day. She kind of retired from music after she had a kid a while back. She does voiceovers and screamed vocals on this tune! Sooooo good. She was also on mauldin of the Well's "Part the Second", which is a gorgeous album. Kind of actually sounds like some of those piano compositions you write, so maybe you'll dig it.

Thanks bud! Glad you liked it! Most of my stuff has some semblance of Kayo Dot influence but this one is *definitely* Kayo Dot with the contrast, haha. I'm considering this one a demo, and I'd like to further improve that middle section of the song so that it's through composed instead of repeating so much.

Nothing to be afraid of with the reverb wink Oh, and I *fucked up* my throat with the growls on this one. I really pushed hard to sound kind of demonic without doing a proper warm up. All better now, but at least it was worth it. Glad you enjoyed the show!

Thanks so much! My mixes had been gradually (slowly) getting better with four years of practice. It's still not quite where I envision it to be, but I'm happy the vibe comes across the way I intended smile

I love the vocal processing, and that hit at 3:53... such great storytelling.  This track cultivates such a strong sense of mystery, and tension with just a very satisfyingly dark and heavy ending.  Great work, as always.

incredible work here, VL. that ending!
you are so good at creating tension and release.
vox sound so badass, but you better do you weeyoops next time! big_smile

must be hella fun to play metal guitar! awesome screams/growls/vocals esp at 5min+ but also throughout the track, and great dynamics for sure!

nice to see baby ViridianLoom play! already sounded v cool back then! heart cheers!!!

Wow!!!!5 stars indeed!!!!! I like the effortlessly proggy quiet bits best but the contrasts make the song. So great. I hope you get a band together, one that can meet you at your level smile looking forward to checking out the historical video and Kayo Dot!
