Gregor Samsa Is Gone

By rplktr on March 17, 2024 5:09 pm

it's all ending

I welcome all critical feedback.

This is a tribute to a wonderful post-rock band from the early 2000s called Gregor Samsa. As far as I can tell it's been dead for over a decade now. Their albums are not available on streaming platforms, they have no website, they're not on Bandcamp or Instagram... They are gone.

This tune isn't post-rock, I went with a synthpop/fusion ballad instead. It's an original composition that quotes several of their songs without covering any particular one. If you're a fan and you recognized any songs, share your findings! And if you have never heard of this band before, try to find their albums "55:12" and "Rest", they are both great. It was truly a unique band creating long slow quiet songs full of nostalgia, sense of loss, but somehow also perseverance. I'm glad I found them, and I'm sad they're gone.

If you've been in this band and you're somehow reading this, thank you! You're a true artist.

114 BPM 9/4, F-major. Analog Rytm drums with a mix of TR-707 samples and internal sounds. Stereo bass with a pair of Moog Mother-32s. Arp and string machine done with Iridium. Retro pizzicato strings from D-05. Guitar recorded with my Yamaha Revstar.

I'm not familiar with the band but this is a really beautiful tribute, and any of us should be so lucky to have our music talked about with such appreciation and admiration. I'm inspired to go check them out now.

That pair of mother 32s sounding amazing! Not familiar with this band either but this is a great song. 9/4 gives it a great feel

Big sounds.

I've not heard of Gregor Samsa, but if they're work is even 1/10th as amazing as this is, those albums must be worth a listen! Absolutely stellar composition.

I dig Gregor Samsa! I originally heard of them through Toby Driver from Kayo Dot since he was on their last release "Rest".

I super dig this too. It's that perfect balance of chill vibes but compositionally complex. Like, those subtle section changes at moments like 3:20 where the vibe hasn't shifted too much but we're exploring territory is really nice.
Also I lovveeeee the descending chord progression at 2:22. Tugs at the heart strings. I'm a nerd so it reminds me of the way the progression moves downwards in the Observatory Theme music for The Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask.

Really beautiful song! Nice tribute too. I hope it reaches them. The synth bass feels so pleasant in my ears.

Just beautiful. I really enjoy the mellow let-down at the end, there's a strong sense of sentiment there that hits all the right spots. I need to look for Gregor Samsa, but meanwhile I got a lot of little Pink Floyd turnarounds and an unmistakable Twin Peaks throwback in that bass that is just all the goosebumps. Awesome.

really lovely and slowly unfolding, nice to hear your vocals!
Gregor Samsa sounds familiar, but not sure i've ever heard them.
hopefully your song will create ripples in the universe and their music will resurface.

A beautiful song about one of the most beautiful, ephemeral experiences in music. I've always wondered if my favorite band is just fading into history somewhere and I will never know they existed.

I found some stuff on YouTube, it's very nice
I like your tribute as well, maybe a little more because of the drums, just adds a little flavor

Love the spacey/mysterious chord progression that intros the song.  The bassline takes me back to that 80s sound I'm so fond of.  I also hear a bit of that Zelda feel.  I too love post-rock bands.  Hadn't heard of them before but def will give it a listen if I come across it.  Caspian is my fav of the post-rocks smile  Great job on this!

Super relaxing. Intriguing chords. Nice vocals. Love the palette of gizmos you are always working with.

Yes something about all the instrument choices and the reverb has a very nostalgic sound. Well done!

beatiful fusion of genres and ghost band tribute!

really love that bass patch, so well orchestrated. The vocals really fit with this track!

this is an awesome tribute - never heard of them before but so glad you were inspired to make this super lush piece

Great production and mix on this track. I like the separation of the instruments and how strong the sense of space is. The track is breathing and is alive. The chord progression perfectly creates this sense of mystery. What a fantastic journey.

Memory is a powerful thing! I read your bio, very cool stuff. You're a veteran, too! Moreso than me. None of my attempts at music from the 1990s survived but if they did they were probably super cringeworthy big_smile

Yeah, I like that Moog bass a lot myself! I have those Moogs prepatched for this purpose these days. It's easy to just turn it on and play, and that is an important part of actually making things: removing obstacles from the beginning of the process.

Glad you like the 9/4, it's got rather unusual ebb and flow.

Virtual high five! I knew somebody would know Gregor Samsa. I'm also hyped about the compliments coming from you. Your entries are very high quality!

It would be crazy if it reached any of them, but while technically possible, I don't think so. We're in our little corner of the Internet here. Thanks for the kind words, I also dig that bass tone!

Thanks! I didn't realize the Twin Peaks connection in this one, but there's something there!

Now that would make my day! No, year!

I have quite a few favorite records that are universally panned by critics, or faded into obscurity over the years. Nowadays it feels like we have access to "everything" but that's not really the case. And even if we did, there's too much stuff to dig through to find the old gems.

Thanks, Ebrit. I'm aware I'm overusing this power ballad TR-707 kit I made in my Analog Rytm in my weekly entries here, but I just can't stop myself. I love how it feels.

The very opening is a quote but then I take it somewhere else. And yeah, "Epochs in Dmaj" is something to behold!

Thanks, glad you like the fusion of things I use!

Yeah, there's some conscious sound design around the gated reverb that resembles the '80s drum sound but is tweaked a bit to sound less overdone (I hope big_smile).

Wow, you're too kind! I'm really stoked that this got so much positive feedback.

This track came up in the playlist during an otherwise stressful drive an made a big difference to my mood and list of bands I should know about.  I don't think I properly know what "post-rock" actually is, but the synthpop aspect + vocals in this track are great.  In any case, I'm going to see if I can track down those albums.  Also 9/4 wow
