Alice, Alice, Alice

By ViridianLoom on February 8, 2026 11:25 pm

I've been procrastinating like a mother fucker. I think the result of today's beat is pretty nice but, if I wasn't under the time constraint, I probably would've taken extra time on the vocals to get a better performance. Instead, I just tried my best and layered three versions of my vocals hoping that the least shittiest aspects shine through. Oh, and then used a lot of compression to try to even out the voices. I've been kind of struggling a bit more with singing lately because I'm trying to avoid tension in the throat but I'm finding my natural singing voice tends to lean lower towards the baritone range, which is harder to mix into songs I want to sound dreamy and ethereal.

Anyways, negative thoughts aside, I this week's tune is a psychedelic piece inspired by McBaise and Alice in Wonderland. Lyrically I just leaned heavily into the themes of escapism that already exist in the story because I relate to that quite a bit. Maybe instead of reading all the depressing shit on social media every day I could be finding solace in a book.

Oh, and I'm pretty happy with how THICC the bass turned out.

this sounds amazing! also, cool references!

Holy moly. This is spectacular. Total groove, great tone, awesome vocals. Instant favourite.

drums sound so good - what is the source of that?

I can hear the mcbaise vibes for sure, lovely
what kind of bass are you playing?  how'd you record it?  sounds LUSH

my new favorite?!?!!??!

you are so awesome!

AMAZING!

Very nice yes the bass is Hitting 2:25 take me away Bass!!

That opening chord prog was so smooth my jaw literally dropped. I am obsessed with this one already.

That last lyric especially is such a cool line. heart

This is fantastic. Guitar tones are amazing. Flavors of a mellow Alice In Chains with those vocal lines. Awesome.

This is really nice! I love the relaxed dreamy vibes, but at the same time the bass grooves so hard. I also really like the guitar parts a whole bunch. Really nice chord choices and melodies. The lyrics in this song are really well done. The "alice, alice, alice" refrain is super fun and catchy. You've got a nice bit of 80's goth sounding vocals in here as well; especially with that opening low note. This is great stuff.

Man that melody is an ear worm... I suspect that's gonna be popping up in my head all week. Very psychedelic vibes too.. I can't put my finger on why, but for makes me feel like I turn on a bunch of black lights (- ‿ ◦)...

And if you're looking for a book to avoid the doom scroll, I would recommend To Be Taught if Fortunate, by Becky Chambers.  I mean, I love all of her books... but I feel like the Monk Robot series already gets plenty of recommendations because it just so perfectly matched the energy of "The Great Resignation"... but To Be Taught if Fortunate totally flies under the radar, and that's a same, because it's a spectacular love letter to science and pursuit of knowledge generally.

this sounds amazing woah, didn't expect some chill psych tunes ! you absolutely have to tell us how u got that bass sound, it's incredible heart i feel like it's so easy for bass sounds to become muddy but this is sooooo crisp.

great bass sound, love those drums and how chill this is!

yoooo this is delightful.
love everything about it. nice saturated drums, that BASS, dreamy guitars, and your vocals are SO GOOD. i actually think this register works really well for the song, and you've got them mixed just right.

*ALTHOUGH, since you brought up Beck last week... let's close our eyes for a minute and imagine him singing the Alice chorus with his Ozzy voice  big_smile

I have to agree with the other mentions of the stupid nice bass tone.

Very woody and tasty. (Sounds a bit like an active bass with tone pretty much cutted out?)

Your vocal did get thru pretty nice imo.

Ooof that is a thiiiick bass indeed.  The whole atmosphere and melody has such a hypnotic feel to it. Love it!

the vibe is great and I love the hook! bass is phenomenal

I really like how the chorus has a classic-rock playfulness, but the rest of the song has this newer and darker, still psychedelic dreaminess to it. You write such evocative music every time heart

super dope. that bass tone is fucking primo. rich and chewy.

These vocals are very ominous.

guitars so good!!! beautiful vocals too, and GREAT flow in the lyrics.

this hypnotic groove too, so good, with the two downbeat snares or whatever (I lack the formal language for this). I can imagine it played live in like a 10 minute version with mad solos n stuff a la pink floyd pompeii

Your vocals sound nice and crisp. I like the delivery, and I think your voice sits perfectly in the mix. Cool lyrical idea. Great bass.

Thanks! I'm recording it with my Ibanez SR655E. The bass tone is the same one I used on Phantasmagoric Metropolis from 2024. I have a really hard time dialing in bass tone, but for some reason the tone I dialed in on that song was perfect. Ironically, I didn't do much with the patch either. It's biasfx2 with the rack mount compressor set to 4:1, sort of fast attack, slow release, and I guess I lowered the threshold down so it's basically always active. The amp sim is W600 (which online research says is equivalent to Eden WTP600). I used a transient plugin to roll off the attack and add some sustain. I probably rolled the mids off from the pot on the bass itself but I can't remember, and I probably played on the rhythm pickup since it's so warm and full. And yeah, for some reason it just sounds PHAT and JUICY.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, that last line does kind of tonally resonant with your vibe for poetry, haha. Glad you enjoyed the tune smile

Thanks bro. Maybe I just need to embrace the goth vox on the psychedelic music? Might be cool actually to lean into a Gothic McBaise aesthetic, lol.

I'll definitely write down that book and check it out sometime. I'm all about the broad idea of human progression through knowledge, especially when people have become more antagonistic towards science under our current political climate. I like to think that, in a different life where music wasn't my passion, I would have pursued a bachelors in science. With my current career as a data analyst I'd love to do some kind of work adjacent to it though.

Also, I love the black lights comment, haha. Psychedelic music + darkness + black lights is a cool vibe to capture.

Thanks! I responded to orange drink about the bass tone so scroll up if you'd like to see the deets wink I'm trying to figure out how McBaise makes his bass tone POP so much in his music. Check out his tune Cold Cuts if you're unfamiliar, that track smacks with the bass.

Lol no worries! The triple comment, even if it is a mistake, gives me triple amount of dopamine when I see my notifications. Also lmao, amazing beck video. I've never seen it before. Mannnn I love Beck, he's such an incredible dude.

Lol, no worries, I also kind of don't know the technical terms for a lot of music stuff. Now that you point out the snare pattern, I don't even know what it is tongue. Funny you metnion the jam too because I had actually written another part in this song that was a psychedelic jam section but I didn't include it because I didn't want to fuck with the vibe UNLESS the section was absolutely killer. I think I'll just paste that section up in the discord later and you can check it out wink

A bit of a Men I Trust vibe musically. But those guys usually avoid disturbing lyrics, and those ones work really well.

Excellent craftsmanship and I even forgive the fadeout as it works well with the hypnotic nature of the track. Therefore, no notes. Five stars.
