Bloom Cue

Generating more heat than light.

I welcome all critical feedback.

Happy #303day! I guess a lot of people will submit acid tracks today, but I already did! In fact, more than once.

So this time around there is an acid line, but with a twist. What if TB-303 was polyphonic? How would that sound? We're answering this with a pair of Mother-32s in a duophonic configuration.

For even more variety compared to my previous acidic tracks, this one is a slow hip-hop-style track in 7/8 with distorted guitars and a fully analog drum section. The acid section is also glitched in some sections. Do not adjust your set. I guess with the glitches and the lead you could call this chip metal. What do you think, Devieus?

···

77 BPM 7/8, Eb-minor. Analog Rytm with minimalistic analog kit sounds. Duophonic stereo patch on a pair of Mother-32s for the acid arp. Overdriven monophonic Moog bass. Iridium lead and pads. D-05 shakuhachi. Guitar recorded with my Yamaha Revstar.

SMacking!! Love love love that Doom-esque bass driving the action. ALL INSTRUMENTS ON MY MARK! 7! GO!

Loved it. Man those deep moog bass notes at the end hit hard. I need more moog! And always love me some acid.

This is like Soviet Jazz, while this is without a doubt really, really good and I love it forever, especially the pizzicato strings glitching like that; there's neither a chip sound, hardware or emulated, nor any electric guitar for the metal.
This still goes extremely hard and if whatever you took away from what we call chipmetal is this, I'd say you should keep doing it.

Really dig the synth sound and the unconventional time signature! Always love a track in 7/8. Love the change up that happens at around 2:15! Great chord switch, really fun sci fi space energy.

Not sure what you mean there, Spider. Where I come from, "Soviet" is not a compliment sad

Our history is filled with unprovoked aggression and subjugation, made worse by the current revisionism of the current Russian dictator. We even go as far as to outlaw promoting totalitarian regimes in the penal code, and that includes public display of the hammer-and-sickle. It's no different from a swastika here.

I didn't mean it like that, and I'm very well aware of the goings-on. "Soviet Jazz" is an artifact of the cold war where musicians from the SU, who only really had Jazz described to them, tried making Jazz. Because cultural influence from the west was as little as it was, they didn't actually know what it should sound like, so they just guessed it. The result is definitely not what you and I would recognize as Jazz in any way.
So the story goes anyway (you can listen to some on youtube, there's definitely some Jazz there, but also some that are less so). It's a compelling one if you ask me, but I understand there could be a better term for it.

Sounds hilarious, but at least in Poland, the situation was different. Gershwinian jazz was very popular before WW2, and while jazz was banned after 1945 by Stalin, some influences did bleed through via records smuggled from West Berlin. And as soon as Stalin died, the jazz scene went out from the underground. Dave Brubeck even visited Poland in '58!

this sounds so great, rplktr!

I like the retrofuturistic vibe!
So smooth, I didn't even realize it was 7/8. Feels great and groovy!

Far from any kind of jazz imho, re: the discussion with Spider, but I don't know of the "soviet jazz" style, never heard of it altho I grew up in Romania post 89. We did have an underground culture of smuggled music as you described, and people were copying western style music from rock to jazz and in between. I would say this track has that oldschool cheesy synth sound of commercials from back in the day, but those were more analog sounding and not necessarily anything to do with soviet area.

great dueling acid lines, and just a really well-crafted tune overall. enjoyed when things got a bit more hectic around 2:30 with the ratchets / stutters.

nice work!

+1 yamaha guitars; revstar is sex. They just don't make a bad instrument in any range or category. Underrated company.

Very dark and innovative. Nothing typical about the sound design here at all.

Everything about this track is so delicious - the groove, the constant morphing and changing without losing the main theme. Terrific mix.

Didn't occur to me that the bass groove can be compared to the Doom soundtrack but I definitely won't complain at the comparison!

Moog foreva... well, we'll see now that it's owned by InMusic 😅

I don't always feel like working in 7/8 but every now and again it's pretty rewarding!

Glad you like it. It's very far from your usual style!

In Poland before 1994 there was no copyright law so there were plenty of TV programs and commercials just straight up ripping Vangelis and JMJ. But there's also some local giants, who produced electronic music at the time, who are revered to this day.

Thanks! Seems like my style these days is to always work in some climax/finale in my tracks.

Agreed! Revstars are very pretty. Mine is snake-eyes green:

I'm a Yamaha fanboy ever since I got a CP300 stage piano in 2006... that is still with me to this day in great condition! It survived moving from Poland to Canada, and then to California, and now back in Poland where I started. It's built in an incredibly serviceable way.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you liked it.

Oh man that deep bass sound at the beginning is killer. Knew right off I'd like this. Really cool interplay with those acidy leads and their variations through the song, a great entry for 303 day. When it all comes together at the 2:30-2:50 mark it's amazing.

Dude holy cow. This needs some vocals so it can become a mega smash hit 🔥🤯🙌

Love it. Incredibly smooth for 7/8

Thick with epic drive and momentum: it feels this track is like a cue for all of humanity to bloom! big_smile

full and rich. barely even noticed it was in 7/8! great transitions and pacing as always. I LOVE that stuttering bit around the 2:50 mark, such a cool moment. the shakuhachi made the ending suddenly feel very early 90s!

love the dark energy, but that upbeat tempo.  this could have vocals or could be a great opening credits theme for a murder mystery

+1 yamaha fanboy, I have a yamaha trumpet and it is a dream come true

your guitar is awesome!  i also have a dark green guitar so we are family heart

sick 7/8 groove smile

great use of big 7, I like odd meters that feel more like 7/4 than three legged dog 7/8 if that makes sense.  your interweaving lead tracks feel really natural as well.  dig the crunchy sound design.  also sweat the revstar, that's a super cool guitar
