PRETA

By mukti on November 10, 2024 11:37 pm

This week I went for a bit of a dark and somewhat ambient track, similar to ETOSO or KOSMA. After hearing MRDRCAT's track from last week (America Is Determined (For War)) I got the idea to sample some old Library of Congress public domain materials, and clipped the fairly well known Duck and Cover film. I also threw in some distorted vocal samples and klaxon/siren sounds to continue the general theme. I ended up playing with this one a bit too long, and pushed it fairly close (for me) to the deadline. Its not my favorite track, but I think it works. As always, I appreciate any feedback!

The title this weeks comes from the idea of being prepared or preparing for something like an atomic bomb. The word "PRETA" is Esperanto for "Ready," which was close enough to "prepare" that I figured it fit.

Thanks! I thought it would be cool to sample the lesser known parts, instead of the main jingle. In the film it's pretty informational/matter-of-fact, but when paired with the siren and beats, it's a bit more dark and eerie.

I did think the sparkly bits could have gone a bit more cosmic if I wanted. Maybe it would have worked well with KOSMA 🧐

I LOVE this! I recognised the Duck & Cover samples because I had a track sketched out for this week that uses them heavily. Mine is quite frantic & silly though (the voice is sped up and warbly) and after Tuesday it didn't seem appropriate to post. Some day...
I love how creepy and understated yours is! The addition of the air raid sirens really gives it a tense vibe and the vocal chops you use are somehow sinister - the original newsreel is rather upbeat, so you worked some magic there! It almost feels like you're hearing the warning through a weighty half-sleep, and you're too sluggish to take action so the panic keeps mounting as the danger increases.

Thanks! I definitely tried to get a different vibe from the original film, so I'm glad it worked out!
