America Is Determined (For War)

I try to keep my politics to myself but I hit a wall this week after digging into some history. Some things never change. Vocal chops are all from a public domain Coast Guard propaganda newsreel called "Carry the Fight". One of the quirks of how I'm wired is that I tend to remember & internalise things that affect me deeply, like when, at age 9, an amazing schoolteacher spent a 30-minute class period explaining to a bunch of kids how advertising works, why it's effective, and how to look out for it. Ever since then I ask myself: "Who is the audience and in what direction are they getting steered?"

<soapbox>

There's a LOT of propaganda in the US, much of it as blatant (or more so) than the vocal clips in this track. It makes for some scary people. I currently live here in a swing state, so every single day for the past 2 months I've received no fewer than 5 political postcards and 4 text messages (not hyperbole), many of them filled with blatant lies vying for my attention. This country balks at the idea of public health care (or honestly even proper health care for the military veterans they lionise) while there's an endless supply of tax money available to feed the military machine - and via that, the pockets of well-oiled cronyism. I'm just very, very tired. The more I worked on this track the angrier I got because in the 81 years since this newsreel came out, the messaging hasn't changed.

</soapbox>

Sorry. There are feelings. I do like how this one turned out. It's a little cluttered (as is my usual) but has a bit more structure and percussion variety than what I usually do, all of it actually on purpose for a change! I tried to include a few more sounds and a few more themes to play off each other. Most of the patches are my own with the exception of the lead, which is a Wavsynth-based Juno patch called "JunoWave" from Avrildacabra's Modern pack that I've tweaked enough to make worse.

Dear god you’re finishing the year strong. This is one of your best yet.

This track is amazing. Feelings of Paul Hardcastle and “Nineteen”. Your sample work is stellar - wonderfully rhythmic, great chopping, and fantastic theme.  Musically tight and just urges everything along. Fantastic. Favorited.

The mix on this track is dope. Sound great, awesome groove for the whole thing too.  Seems like a good way to channel all the feels.

LOVE the vocal chops! I love propaganda themes in music (in that I hate propaganda, so I like when its showcased), and you really used those samples well. I'm also in a swing state - I think I got at least one text/call every hour today... can't wait until 8PM Tuesday when it will (hopefully stop).

I think you pulled this together really well -- has industrial vgm soundtrack energy! Good stuff!

Dude! This reminds me so much of early-ish KMFDM, I love it. Great mix.

You absolutely nailed it with this, it's awesome. Also, deeply disturbing to see the country has moved so little in some senses. Your anger comes through in the mix and it works really well with this, well done.

And I'm right there with you - it is such a pity that we're in this place... I want to say that I'm looking forward for this thing to be over, but it's never going to be really over, right? There's always going to be **something**... Sigh...

siiiiick!!! It is unfortunate how well the propaganda works. Def feeling the feels. This is a killer song and appreciate you sharing your views.

Oooo thank you! I should get angry more often...which might happen at this point I suppose. I had the 12" single for Paul Hardcastle's "Nineteen" when I was growing up, so you may have just pinpointed where I got my sample aesthetic! That and I loved Front 242's "Welcome to Paradise" - so I guess that tracks.

Thank you! It might be that I need to get out of my own way when I create this stuff. I don't even remember much of how this track came together!

Thanks! I love the older industrial style, and I'm tickled that I get to try making some of my own. It didn't occur to me that I was showcasing the propaganda for what it is, but I guess I was. I just wanted to take their own words and chop them up to make them a bit more honest. You know, for a change.

Sweet! I just need some more guitar riffs and female backup singers now.

Apparently you are VERY right about this. Time to keep showcasing propaganda for what it really is, I suppose. Where's that schoolteacher when we need her? There are a few comments about the mix on this one - I'll have to pick apart what I was up to, since I'm never sure how to go about mixing things and there have been a couple times I stumbled on a good mix. Have to figure out how to reproduced that consistently!

Thank you so much, I'm glad it hit right for a few people! In general I'm finding that a lifetime of being an 'outsider' for various reasons (I was never that popular kid, my family was new to the area, we had no money, etc) has given me more of an objective view of What's Going On, and it gets frustrating to watch people who are used to being part of a larger group and take comfort in that get misled by people using that comfort-in-groups feeling against them. My brain hasn't turned on yet today so hopefully that makes sense. I'm not saying I'm immune to propaganda, but I like to think I'm watching for it most of the time.

Yeah. I sort of wallowed in despair for this week, but I’m looking forward to anger’s return.

If you need any KMFDM-ish industrial guitar riffs, I know a guy.
