Searching For You

By horatiuromantic on August 7, 2022 9:48 pm

Here is a dreamy ballad on piano and synth about my endless search. I managed to record it all in one take with minor level adjustment afterwards. I even caught it on a rare video!!!!! Enjoy:

Instruments used: the UA Ravel grand piano, synthesizers from Logic layered together with an electric piano, controlled by the novation launchkey mini with the nice arpeggiator mode, and my voice through the usual effects plus the Samplr iPad app for the beat.

Yea!

Love the way this meanders in such a dreamy fashion, and that little percussive addition is fantastic. Was fascinating to see a video of it, too.

Whoa!

I am super impressed by the performance. Awesome ideas, Nice functional setup, the ipad setup is very nice.

I am the more the 30 secs takes kind of guy so seeing you doing close to 7 mins of greatness impress me a lot!

Well played!

Mmmm, this is really sweet. heart

Yeaaa! I love to do longer performances but they do take a lot more energy big_smile I think also better instruments always lead to more inspiration. This one had the wacky synth from Logic but I'm looking into better synths, and then when coupled with a real piano, real magic can happen!

I actually think there are loads of very cool synths in Logic (Alchemy is a beast), but yes some other compagnies does even more creative tools that are pretty awesome as well. I have some decent 3rd party vsts that I did get over the years (mostly free stuff, or given away with some hardware purchases).

I really think playing with acoustic instruments is very inspiring as well, when you feel the vibrations from the instruments and not from a speaker.

The synths in there might be good, but the problem I have is with the interface - it's just not well suited for performance. There's nothing like a physical interface. And at least with the ipad, there is multitouch and some things can still be quite expressive, especially instruments that really utilize touch as a musical interface, not just for virtual knobs and buttons. But on a physical instrument, if you have 3 knobs in a row, you can actually manipulate them all with one hand to some degree. For those folks who feel good programming a synth non-realtime, the software stuff might be equal or sometimes more powerful than a physical device, but I don't think I wanna go down the programming route.

Actually I played around with a Korg Minilogue last week and it made so much sense the way the interface was designed that I even got a better sense of how synths work by looking at it and using it.
