Quantum Sand

Haha so I played a gig 3 hours away from home tonight. With the intention of finishing my submission and then using USB mode to transfer from my M8 to my cellphone.

Probably should have tested that functionality before leaving. It didn't work...

Haha so then I thought I'd just take the SD card out and plug it into my phone.

But of course, I didn't have a pin to get the SD card reader out my phone. 🤣

So I found a tooth pick, and shaved it down with a bottle cap until it was thin enough to press in and release the SD card slot's catch.

Managed to mess up my render twice, so I had to repeat the process 3 times to get the song on my phone. And then download a WAV to MP3 converter.

Anyway... I got the song up!

I've never made ambient music, and wanted to give it a try. So this song is different from anything I've ever made.

It started with a drone I made on my Analog Four when I still had it.

Then lots of extra synths from the M8 and a few samples. My favourite part is a recording of my wife whistling, calling her mom's dogs. It happened to fit perfectly, in a really cool, eerie way.

Haha, props to people who make ambient music! It's tough!

Anyway! I like what I made. Hope some of you awesome people do to!

This is super other worldly!!! Very cool, man! And it absolutely does not sound like your first attempt at something more ambient! Really well done!

Thank you! 😁

I really appreciate that!

Haha Weekly Beats is helping me make styles of music I've always wanted to dip my toes in but never tried.

Looking forward to hearing your submission this week!

I remember the struggles in 2024 when I tried to submit on vacation. Those online wav->mp3 transcoders are quite a trap, aren't they?

I have tried the usb-storage mode with my iphone successfully in the meantime and I can get the wav transcoded to mpeg4 audio M4A (whatever that is), using Shortcuts. Still have to try if WB would be happy with that.

The track sounds pretty epic and full. Mysteriously awesome.

Wow! What a story! Well done for being so crafty and getting it posted!

Nice job switching it up with genres! I really like that wailing lead in the back, it's super smooth and ties everything together. Sounds like it was quite the ordeal to get it uploaded, but glad it worked out in the end!

Love the crunchy soundscape. As a iPad only kind of person those struggles sound super familiar to me lmao. Glad you made it!

This thing is massive and beautiful.

ominous & intense, excellent work.
and i agree, the whistle works perfectly with the world you conjured!

whoa so cool! that whistle is beautiful and the whole piece flows very nicely. and love the perilous efforts to upload big_smile it's all part of the journey eh

Nice one, I really love the feeling of slowly build of tension throughout the piece. Great job taking a stab at ambient, sounds like you're already very proficient at it!
My favorite moment is at 1:52, where it's like the sun's first rays are passing over the horizon. Beautiful stuff. The whistles feel both very welcoming but also slightly alien.
Hope you'll make a couple more ambient pieces this year!
