On the topic of traffic jams, I find indicator phase differences between multiple cars when waiting to turn right or left to be inspiring.

i have been mesmerized by this phenomenon since i was a little kid.  add in the rhythm of the windshield wipers and the patter of a steady rain, and its a veritable brainwave symphony!

looking for: artists of any genre to make some crazy shit

ive got some WIP i could send your way, i can finish something youve got, or we can start from scratch.  Id also like to wait a couple weeks before jumping into a colab but i usually cant turn down a good idea ^^

Pretty plz,

If your a chip musician turn off the gameboy, look at glitch or ambient or nu-disco, or something fresh. I'd be sad if this site turns into a bunch of chipscene fallout. (...)

Instrumental music is fine, but a good vocal is better. If your not a vocalist, plz write lyrics, or a phrase of spoken word to sample, or at least use a vocoder. Or even better yet collab with a vocalist.

For the love of god back off on brickwall compression. Yes like everyone else I like a good pumping beat, but use multiband compression, and leave some transients in tact. -20db of L2 is straight wrong.

I don't think that was point. I do think [you] all need to calm down and stop taking it so personally.

After some thought, I decided it is indeed worth my time to respond to this because something like this could set the tone for the whole year.  I got the point but it could have been made without stating opinions like they are facts.  This seemed like it was going to be an inclusive community when I joined, and to see a post making prescriptions and telling people what to do just doesn't fit.  Vocal music is NOT better than instrumental music - thats just like.. your opinion man.  I happen to enjoy music without vocals more, especially if its some vocoded nonsense.  I feel that samples and vocals can often ruin a good song, but that's my opinion, and I don't expect nor would I want anyone to change themselves for my tastes.  Instead of telling people to put down the gameboys and hop on some nu-disco, it might be more constructive to state your preferences or say that you hope to see chipmusicians branch out in this or that way.  Don't get me wrong, I agree with the sentiment of this post, but why would you direct ultimatums at the community if you didn't want them to take it personally?  I even agree that multi-band compression is usually superior to standard, but for the love of god, be nice when you say it.  Perhaps I take music too seriously, but I'm really hoping this challenge is going to be a place for growth and constructive criticism and when I see a post like this, it makes me wonder..

i started out writing alternative rock with my band in high school (one 16 track album to show).  then i moved on to experimental electronica when that band broke up when we went to college and did that for about 5 years (an 11 track album and a 6 song EP to show).  Then in late 2009 i started hearing about the chip scene from some of my friends and i was sold.  I've been making chiptunes ever since!  Got one album of chiptune/nerdcore fusion under my belt from late last year and almost done with a full length chiptune album hopefully to be released in a couple weeks.  With all my music I've always slanted toward the experimental edge of the music so im not exactly sure what genres i would fall into but lots of dance style music.  anything that makes me happy :-D  i usually get bored with my music after a few songs of a particular type, and ive been planning to get my electronica mixed back in with my pure chip.  usually runs the gamut from ambient to thrash, but well see what happens.

i do what i want.  why all the chip hate?  this post is pretty silly to me.

I plan to make a habit of posting something inspiring here from time to time for anyone scratching their heads.  To get us started, I recently wrote a song about a friends cat.  His name is Lupe, and he is a 6 months old bobtail, but rather large and clumsy for his age.  He made for great inspiration. Perhaps there is an animal in your life in need of a theme song smile

I'm sure most of the esteemed participants in WeeklyBeats have got some great ideas for their first few songs and I can't wait to see them all!  Looking down the line though (you know, like week 30 or so) I could see myself running out of steam and rehashing old ideas.  I wanted this post to be a place people could share, in specific or in general, what inspires them to make a song.  This way when you're over flowing with inspiration, you can share with those who might be lacking and when you're lacking, there's somewhere you can go!  So if you want to tell us all about how your girlfriend inspired you to write your latest tune, or how being struck by that stray baseball last week really got the creative juices flowing, go for it!  It's not necessarily limited to notes, measure and format (although those can be great kick starters), but hopefully we can expand to the ideas and inspirations that are behind the music.  Tell us your story!  You might just make someones week ^_^

i love my ms2000 but i havent broken it out pretty much since i started doing this chiptune thing..  after giving it some more thought i really have no idea what ill be making music with by the end of this.  a year is a long time for me musically.  i might be orchestrating gorillas and tubas with my brainhole by next december..  i think im going to use this as an opportunity to experiment.  btw, ive been talking about this with people and when describing it i want to call it something and finding it difficult.  my instinct was to call it a "competition" or a "challenge" like so many other interweb things, but its not a competition and the only challenge really is to do it and at that there isnt really a prize or judging system.  but still thats part of what really appeals about this whole idea to me.  anyone got a better word for it?

my personal goals for this contest are pretty simple.  i have been considering doing something like this on my own for a while, but when i saw this it was a no-brainer.  Its like AA for music!  a community born of chiptunes to publish to and get feedback from people that are real musicians- yes please!  over the course of this year i hope to:

-generally get better at writing, recording and producing tracks

-expand my skills in lsdj, and become comfortable with writing and performing with nanoloop (1.6 cart arriving soon!!)

-experiment with integrating other instruments into gameboy compositions (classical guitar, trumpet, keyboard, live drums, vocals, etc)

-experiment with recording and production techniques

-get feedback from awesome artists

-meet, talk with and/or collaborate with the other artists participating in Weekly Beats

-hear weekly experimental music from awesome artists

i already have my first song in the works!

ill be using my gameboys for lsdj and nanoloop primarily, but i plan using this as an opportunity to experiment with mixing mediums.  perhaps you will hear some classical guitar, trumpet, microsynth, or any number of other possible instruments make an appearance throughout the year in my tracks.  its also a good excuse for me to practice up the recording and production process in my new studio, so expect some play with mixers and effects too.  who knows really!  ive got one im working on for the first week thats just lsdj, but the rest of the year will just happen as it happens i guess.  im also really looking forward to hearing tracks from a lot of the other artists that have been inspirations to me musically that ive seen sign up for this.  if im honest i probably wouldnt have found this half as appealing if trash80, NNNNNNNNNN and little-scale werent doing this ^_^' but in any case, bring it on!
