W02 - 1_10_2026 Pull

Settling into new year. Largely stayed home working on projects, distracted. Setup re-optomized record player space for listening and re-arranged speaker system. Mono fine. Enjoyed sitting down and listening to accessible albums on shelf. Enjoyed the intentionality. Shared Dogfood (5) w/ AL and discussed previous life overlaps. Experiences with drugs and poverty w/ coworkers and hometown. Frequently Reminded of Ta-Nehisi Coates writing about the inability to understand completeness of humanity in The Message. Think of it often. It applies to a lot. Thought about C, others, and wondered if their life is good. Invited to game night at M&P's. Met with strangers with kids and families. Caught up on connected friends. Discussed careers, industry, and kids. Enjoyed hearing the life experiences from strangers. Evaluated with wife on drive home. Took first bike ride of the year. Bad sleeping habbits. need to avoid illness. Midlife parties are different. Thinking of Emmery's age and health Back home with our cat ruby.

Media consumed:  The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Mœbius, Aphex Twin - I care because you do - Black Box, Johan Johanson - Orphee, smohm - Pointe, Clark - Steep Stims, Square Pusher - Stereotype, Sébastien Tellier - Sexuality, Zabutom - Resolution, Star Trek: Voyager, Very Important People, Smiling Friends,
Shamilton SF Sketchfest 2025, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5*, 6, 7,

Gear Used:
Roland Juno-6
104hp Eurorack (sampled Sy0.5, Plaits, Turing machine, etc.)
Tascam Dr-40 (record parts)
iphone (field recording sample from sunset bike ride)

Software Used:
Ableton (mixing adjustments and mastering)
Music Thing Modular's Workshop system (web recreation)
Izotope Ozone 10

Wasn't particularly inspired. Played with web based recreation of Music Thing Modular's Workshop system by Vincent Maurer after seeing the original creator's (tom Whitwell) post about it. Later in the week, experimented with controlling Juno-6 (no midi, only basic cv control and clock input for arppeggiator) with eurorack and running it through for extra modulation and processing with varying note amounts. Further tinkered with new eurorack configuration and recorded everything from all experiments to be chopped and used with M8 as samples. Didn't have a direction so opted for outside approach, fading in different loops with different rates for structure. Stumbled into something that reminded me of a more orchestrally loose compositions styles after layering juno lines. Layered with extra samples.

This track has quite a melancholic vibe to it. The plucked string thingie (Braids... or Plaits, maybe) fits really well with it. As constructive criticism, maybe the kick drum is too loud at moment for the otherwise introspective feel of the track.

Otherwise, a nice piece. Always nice to read about your process. Sounds quite cohesive, even when "lacking a direction"

I like this one even better than last week's, the cycling/phasing quality of the different melodies & the plucky top melody feels even more what i associate with modular somehow, which also somehow makes it feel more organic? I can't quite describe why, just love the fluttery movement on this one!

sooooo so good.  the atmosphere of the track is genuinely amazing. i'm picturing a slow sunrise on a snowy day, viewed from a moving train car as dead trees fly by the window. insanely good stuff

Feels like a lovely day in the park, if a bit foggy.

This gives me the feeling like I'm standing at a bus stop with an umbrella but it's definitely not rainy. I love it

those juno layers.. heart so much feeling in this one. somehow wished it was longer, put it works as it is. thanks for sharing! smile

such a lovely progression to drift off too heart love how those "baked in the sun" pads sound.  The pulse of the kick pushing forward.

oh dang. a sweet, somber heaviness hangs over this for me.
we're outside looking at the garden. everyone is gone.

The Message hit me really hard. very important book imo

Beautiful work and a moving write up. It’s been a strange start for the year. Really like the noisy texture in the beginning kinda fading in—subtle but adds a lot to the perception of pacing.

FWIW, your life sounds way more social than mine. My weeks are Seattle rain (supposed to break this week!) and occasional chats with distant friends I care a lot about, been absent from the local scene first due to mild illness then due to the fact that staying home is nice when you’re past 40.

Very chill, kinda getting a haunted vibe going on thats fun

oh I really like the main synth sound and interplay!

Somehow reminds me of one of my favourite soundtracks of all time, I am sharing if you are curious:

Getting rocked to sleep by unceasing waves of a never-ending ocean, that you don't fully dare to trust. If this is "not particularly inspired", then I can not wait to hear "inspired".

The string was M8's braids (I also own a modular clone version) and, I very much agree with your levels assessment in hindsight. Its a good one smile

It was a scrappier week for me. The ideas I was playing with just didn't line up quite how was imagining it. That's ok though, we got something in smile Sometimes you just gotta pick a direction and go with it.

I am glad you enjoyed it! The timing stuff didn't work out how I intended to use it originally but, I tried to pivot to make it work and ended up discovering some new techniques in the process. Sometimes there's opportunity in failure. It was a nice reminder for me smile

It's cool that it ended up conjuring so much imagery. When I was working on this, I was thinking of the bird sanctuary areas along the paths I live. They have a lot reeds, pools of water, and grass that eventually lead to the coast of the bay. I take sunset bike rides out there when I can. It's a nice place to stop.

Juno's are great! I am glad you enjoyed it. Longer wasn't in the cards this time unfortunately. Bit of a tough writing week for me.

haha, "drift off" is perfect description. I fell a sleep a couple of times while working on this. It was pretty late and my tiredness very much had an influence on the outcome tongue

Yes! I totally agree. There were a lot of sections of the book that really resonated with me and others that gave me a lot of things to think about.

Good ear! I took that noise idea from a music workshop that Disasterpiece made on writing the music for the indie game Fez years ago. I really like those looser motion elements and try and sneek them in where I can. I think they add a bit of spice.

Thank you for sharing your "FWIW". It's been a busy few months for me. A lot of friends have been trying to hang out before they went back to work after their holiday breaks. We've had a boom in socialization... I appreciate having the people in my life but, I've actually been a little over socialized tongue I am ready for a little quite smile

Para One! I used to listened to his stuff a lot in the 2010's. I actually own his album "Passion" on vinyl. I didn't know he was doing soundtrack stuff. I'll have to deep dive into that smile

Now I have an overwhelming urge to check up on all the Marble Records folks. Surkin and Bobmo were also excellent.

That's very kind heart Thanks for listening and I am glad you enjoyed it smile

Lovely ambience on a rough Sunday! The opening swell just drew me in.

Been intrigued by the Modular Workshop System since I saw Tom Whitwell speaking about it on some podcast (probably Why We Bleep). Cool that someone made a web version of it, did any of that end up in the final track?

It did smile The opening sounds are sampled from the web Workshop clone. I ran into some bugs with the web version but it gives a pretty good idea of what the real deal is about. The design of it very much encourages experimentation and unconventional results. You can do more conventional things but it would be a bit simpler than what you might be used to on other systems. If you are interested, Whitwell also did an interesting video with Mylar Melodies on youtube outline the design thinking he put into making the workshop. I found it pretty interesting. I've too have been tempted in the Workshop. I think for now, the web version will have to tide me over.

Cheers, I'll have a look at that talk tomorrow. I'm not really looking for new gear either, but it's fun to geek out.

Love your ethereal vocal synth sounds and the melancholy melodies.  Like a haunted floppy from an old E-MU

Beautiful track
