The Sign

It's been a super busy week so I didn't get to spend as much time as I'd have liked on the song idea I was interested in--for which I haven't even started recording, let alone started writing lyrics for it--so I altered course last night and made this instead.

What this became is just me experimenting with automation, layering different sounds, and practicing my mixing. So yeah, don't expect any sudden twists (I've hidden traditional songs towards the end of 5 minute ambient jams before but not this time) because this is kind of speed trash. Just making noise to make noise. It kind of serves a purpose for something I'm wanting to do on future tracks though, which is recording unfamiliar sounds, transforming those sound sources, and learning more about sound design with samples and synths alike.

When I was working on one of my other ideas this week, it reminded me a bit of this amazing french avant-garde band I first got into back in 2011 called Nooumena who integrated a lot of experimental sound design into these dense compositions. And I suppose that was one of the things that caused me to hold back this other song idea because I felt like I needed first become a bit more familiar with the tools I have available to me for sound design so that my creative flow is uninterrupted by trying to learn something I don't know anything about. So even though I didn't make the song I planned on or wanted to make this week, this was still fun to make this tune because it's kind of a stepping stone. An opportunity to research and test stuff I'm unfamiliar with.

Cool space cowboy feel to this! The guitar sounds great both at the beginning and at the end with the broken chords. Impressive speed trash! wink

Beautiful sounds!

I love the way the acoustic guitar sits in the mix. I had one of those moments where I was listening on headphones, but the guitar sounded so real and present it felt like it was coming from somewhere else. Nice work

Awesome to hear what you learned making this one! Of course, it was just as cool getting to hear the finished product. That glistening guitar outro was so pristine. Personally, I think it turned out way too gorgeous for a speedtrash hashtag!

Maybe in a few more years I will be dumping out a masterpiece for my busy week w2 release.

I’ve never tried something like this, but what I found myself paying attention to was what was keeping me interested. There seemed to always be a focus point as well as depth and plenty of things to listen to going on with energy rising and lowering over it. One person’s rushed experimental song is another’s wonderfully done song!

moody and so evocative. i love how you layered in yr vocal!

nice man! way to step out of your comfort zone and learn new stuff. it sounds fantastic. great buildup and intense atmosphere. the guitar keeps it all grounded in material reality. i used to listen to God Is An Astronaut a lot, and this totally brings me back to those times. the kinda stuff i'd take with me on super late night walks through the neighborhoods. heart

Really like that heavy synth bass in the intro. The way the guitar sort of floats in is really nice too. This has a really nice mix of peaceful, ominous and adventurous vibes all the same time. This would make a really nice nighttime piece for exploring the world (thinking videogames here, but this would work well for nighttime walking and contemplation). Really beautiful. Glad you got to experiment with something new despite being busy!

I might have to listen back to hear the tin whistle. smile Beautifully unhurried-sounding, spacious track. thanks

great layers and mixing. Sonic space carefully arranged. Vocals are chefs kiss

... "boring details"... I resemble that remark sir ꉂ (´∀`)ʱªʱªʱª and also GREATLY appreciate you documenting and sharing your process.  Particularly for sound design.  I might have to mess around with guitar feedback as a sound source.

Also, I think what you made, regardless of the effort level or intention, is in fact a worthy piece of art.  I mean, <sarcasm> while I'm sure it's shocking that I would write in defense of a atmospheric sound design driven pieces as high art </sarcasm>, I think there is an argument that all captured and shared moments of self reflection and growth could (and maybe should) be considered art.  And I think when it's captured through the medium of musical expression, there's little doubt about it.  I think you captured a super interesting atmosphere, and created a musical world for me to fill with my own imagination... just because you left space in the work for me to participate, doesn't mean it's "unfinished" or "unworthy".  I mean, I think ambient and atmospheric works are kind of like video games, in an artistic sense.  Because the actual realization of the artwork is kind of collaborative with the person consuming it.  Like, while you can write a game that pushes people down a scripted hallway... some of the best games are the ones that allow player agency to become part of the story, and subsequently the artistic expression.  I think pieces like this are the same, in that, the story only unfolds fully while the listener internalizes the track and inhabits it with their own imagination... filling in the story so to speak.  And I think what you have made, begs the listener to enter the world you have crafted and to populate it with their own imagination.

So, in my opinion, whether you intended to or not, you have made an art sir, and it is very good.  And, if this is your speed trash, then it is absolutely my speed treasure.

Shit, this is brilliant, man!

Dark, moody, and evocative.
I don't know what the rest of your music sounds like. But I think this is a great example, that very short deadlines can bring out the best in us. The subtlety of this song is what makes it so good, man!

Beautiful sounds and wonderful atmosphere!

Wow what a lovely space I escaped to just now.  The transition from the pads to the guitar was so good. Thank you for your support and inspiration. so much to listen back to on this! faved heart

good noise

Ooh this is a nice soundscape

Vibey! I get Diablo 2 flashbacks and feel like I'm at the spa. Both very good indicators that I like it

Sounds like the intro to some obscure 2012 Indie game set in a fantasy forest or in the middle of space, super cool

Going to have to go with feeling at the edge of a space mystery in the intro, and then vergin into diablo territory when the guitar comes in haha... then distant harmonica like instrument twists it into a western... and why not? I'd play that game

Again, I love your arpeggios

Oh, and be careful, I don't think you are legally allowed to use the word "trash" in tags for music like this!

Such a vibe. This is not the "dexterity playing" we are used from you, but those layers of textures over two chords are awesome.

Not boring at all, super dense and wide. Love the acoustic.

More of this please (and if you want to add some twist with more complicated sections. Virtuosity. Sure, this is awesome too but I really enjoyed that.

Take care!

This sounds awesome, vl!  I just watched a bunch of soviet-era Polish/Russian sci-fi last night and I guess it put me in the exact mood for something this evocative and atmospheric.

I'm telling my grandkids this was Ace of Base

but also fantastic atmosphere

Lovely and haunting

Love this one. I really like how the opening’s retrofuturist vibes transform into an organic ending. It’s heavy but hopeful somehow. The guitar harmonics / high notes highlights passage is particularly effective and a highlight for me (2:27-3:00 or so) and functions really well as echoes in the next section. heart

At this point I think we can't believe in any "speedtrash" tags anymore. Very skillfully made, evocative and immersive. The mix is great. I appreciate your care to dial in the guitar stab, and I can say your struggle is somewhat internal as the result as is sounds perfectly fine to me. So yeah, go fight for the tone and effect you want, but don't think the current render is a failure.

Excited to hear the thing you haven't finished for this week!

dope! great process!

Great, beautiful tune
Really made me feel a thing

Very spacious! Enjoyed this a lot!

It's beautiful
what could it possibly mean?
