Climb the Spire

Synthwave, baby.

I've been listening to Synthwave music on and off since around the time Hotline Miami first came out and I was introduced to the genre through it's bad ass soundtrack, but I haven't really made many attempts at it. I made one track back in 2020 called Beyond the Neon Lakes which I was pretty happy with but I figured it's time I try again. I went with a pretty basic beat for a majority of this song just to establish a baseline for writing in this genre. I also bought plogue chipsounds during black friday and figured this would also be a good opportunity to incorporate some chiptune aesthetics. For this song I imagined some kind of action hero climbing a hellish spire (very Mandy-ish vibes in my mind) with the goal of killing it's demonic lord. Really dorky shit, haha. So I had some fun with layering in samples, taking quite a bit of inspiration from Kedbreak's narrative approach wink. Anyways, this was a lot of fun and I could see trying to write some kind of synthwave/chiptune prog-concept album in the future.

(my favorite part is the villain being thrown from the spire)

It is synthwave, but you really make it yours. This is very unique. The spoken samples reminded me of some of what Kedbreak does... The punchy bass are definitely yours... Well played.

rad!

Fiercewave, baby! heart

I love that deep synth bass that this track opens with. It's got a nice dark gritty feel to it. The beat is a basic kick snare groove but honestly I think that actually helps here because it just keeps your head bobbing while you can focus on the interesting melodic ideas. It's definitely stylistically a good choice. I really like the weaving lines from the bass and the higher voices. I think they work really well together. The scream at the end is quite funny as well, I enjoyed that. I also like the ending gets really chippy. Nice job! This track slaps!

That's good synthwave. I definitely feel the Kedbreak in this too.

That timing thing that starts around 2:00 is killer! The heartbeat section around 3:00 as well. Wow, I got more and more hooked as this song kept going. I think you did a fantastic job taking your different ideas and really gluing them together. It's a really cohesive, polished final product. I'm super impressed.

great vibe.

Some of this is (e.g. 4:40ish) is like a harsher take on Disasterpeace's Fez soundtrack, and I am really partial to both the Fez soundtrack and the aesthetic here.

5:20 -- nice heart

That is one epic track that mixes indeed the synthwave trope with more advanced prog music. There are some really badass riffs in there, with an heavy groove. The section at 2:00 is really interesting, with its weird rhythm. As the track progresses, it feels like we are passing different areas, with variations of sonic landscape, and it climaxes around the final minute.

What an epic track!

Heh, big fan of Slay the Spire here, wondering if that's part of the story here? Beautifully mesmerising sounds here, love what happens at the one minute mark, that was unexpected and very pleasing, and sets things up for the journey to come. Also love how the whole thing threatens to dissolve midway through but never fully loses the plot.
