Emptiness Full Of Possibility

By Tone Matrix on January 28, 2024 10:16 pm

You know that cartoon or random short story where the main character hears a tiny sound coming from somewhere but can't quite figure it out.  So he starts to move and push piece by piece until he's left with absolutely nothing.  Thinking it's finally gone only to find out it's still there?
Ooooh that was allllmost me. tongue
When I started this week I kept seeing this tiny blip of a low frequency (in the 60Hz -15dbish zone) showing up in the EQ coming from my inputs (where the Roland Piano comes from).  So I decided to clean up a bit around the tiny lil cheap behringer mixer I have.  After reseeding the cables and making sure everything was in the right place, ding the blip was gone, hooray!
I went to play the Roland annnnnd it was completely haywire in the response and input of what I was playing.  If I hit it hard it responded quiet.  If I barely touched it yelled at me.
"Oh no.... What have I done?"
Well long story yet again too long, I spent a good two days thinking my Roland keybed was damaged because of me fiddling (not noodling) the old cables that hadn't been touched in years.
I have no idea what caused the keyboard issue.  Finally after restarting things multiple times it was magically back to normal.  No idea why.  Oh good so I finally got rid of the blip!?
"Oh... it's back..."
So the moral of my story... if it taint broke.... yea...
As far as the low frequency thing I'm wondering if any of you have this issue.  I know I could do better with probably some bit of a power conditioner thingy or better setup rather than just your typical extension plug outlet thing holding most of the gear.  I also think if it's not an audio ghost in ma machine then mayhaps it is the air conditioning in the house or some electronic device being picked up?
Anywho the other moral also is.. I kept on trying and such and finally yay.
Resulted in this sorta hopeful "poppy?" electronic thing...  Some of the drums midway are from another new addition to the kontakt library, Karriem Riggins.  The old SY22 string patch gets resurrected now and then as well.  smile
Thank you for your awesome comments and listening to my tracks.  This year has been inspiring and motivating so far.  Scuse me while I go pass out meow.

I kind of figure sometimes the limitations or quirks of our workspaces sometimes add to our sound.  If I ever win the lottery I'd love to build a fully pimped acoustically awesome home studio.  But in the meantime I just record in a room and I accept that ambient house sounds will make their way in.  Plus I bet fancy studio setups probably get weird cable glitches, too.

Anyway, I like the upbeat vibe of this one.  The end feels a little more somber, but it adds a nice finality to the proceedings.

Gear issues are the worse!

It is VERY frustrating when you have things that doesn't work as it should... Everything sounds great to me on this track so you did overcome those issues. I quite like the "smooth" ambiance, but moving at the same time.

oh eq... an area i hope to learn about more this year

glad it all worked out - you can hear the triumph in this track
i really like the sounds you choose with round the piano - really smmmooooooth wizard!

A beautiful track that takes us on a journey. I really liked that short lead in the back, with the slight fuzzy sound. For some reason, I found that it added a nice texture against the piano. I got also some goosebumps around 2:17. Beautiful piece!

I tell you, chasing frequencies is always quite the adventure. I have spent hours finding out a cable has gone bad. Lots of great sprinkles in this track well done!

Tanks so much!  The fuzziness comes from a cool plugin that is now one of my favs to use to give lil glitchy sparkles to anything.  I've used it on drums too for extra weirdness.  But for this one it's on the piano and just a small percentage of it coming in.  But you can really mangle things with it too.  So it's great for sound design if you go 100% with it.  It's also FREE from soundhack.  There are other similar vsts by them that can pitch delay, decimate etc... Def worth checking out if you're looking to try something new smile

wow, another great journey with Tone Matrix. thank you for that lift! and yeah, the ending was the perfect landing. nailed it!

re: power - i've been really happy with Furman stuffs. grabbed a couple of these last year:
"Furman Pro Plug 6-Outlet Power Block"
they are more expensive that a standard power strip, but not too bad.

definitely a song that sings out from an unlimited sky, to a universe full of hope heart

Enjoyed this. Super hopeful and triumphantly moving forward. Great way to start the day. Magic sparkly layers and movement happening, yes. Comtemplative ending to close it. Nice! Glad your Roland and other gear is OK!

Another beautiful and eloquent track. The cable and noise issues I know too good. Radical acceptance helps me a lot.

Unwanted noises in the studio are one of my pet peeves.  They're soooo annoying and can be tricky to hunt down.  Good power supplies are pretty vital especially in my main modular synth rig for example.  So much could go wrong with noise there.  Haha.

Good luck with the suppression.  50/60hz usually suggests it's a grounding issue if that helps.

Groovy little ditty by the way.  Quite chill and cruisey.

wow, this track title is incredible

listened to this twice, why did it make me all sad????

I know i'm just like YEAH LINE NOISE IS PART OF MY "SIGNATURE SOUND"

I don't use much hardware, but every time I do I spend so much time trying to figure out why something isn't working or why I'm getting feedback, probably wouldn't be an issue if I used it more frequently.  Very nice track this week, beautiful piano as usual and some nice electronic touches.

Really nice progression with this track! There's definitely a story being told here. I really love those parts when you create space and are left with minimal sounds, but it's so effective. Great work

Sometimes I wish I could be more descriptive on why I like something, but this is one of those examples where all I can say is that I think all the elements of this song came together perfectly and do a good job of capturing a very specific kind of vibe that I vibe with the whole way through.

A fine track, nice work.

Very cool track.  This gives me 80s movie sound track vibes for some reason, but definitely not in like the pop/new wave 80s sense.

As for your low rumble issue, are you plugged into the instrument/hi-z input instead of the line input?  Had an issue similar to what you're describing before and I did indeed dismantle my studio and do hours of troubleshooting on individual pieces or gear in my signal path before starting at the mixer one more time and moving the cable over one hole and the noise going away.

Man, I love the grove of this track.  And that arp that kicks in around 02:13... (◕‿◕)♡

ha the title was taken from Chelsea Wolfe's eloquent description of her new album coming out.  Def check out her dark beautiful schtuff if you haven't.  But in one of her YT making_of_vids she was describing her new album and said something like "it has emptiness that is full of possibility"  and i went sw00n heart
also noise can def be good but when i'm trying to sometimes overcompress the low notes of the pianer, the hum picks at my brain smile

Nicely done 👍

When that low piano hits, it hits so well.
When that high piano hits over it, it hits even weller.
