potholes in space W2

By SQF on January 11, 2026 5:47 pm

A friend of mine shared this kick ass drum sample with me, I slowed it down and the vibe was set.

Listening back to this song I imagine some sort of space travel, think of like an RV but in space.
Everything is going great, you're just staring out the window of your space craft drinking some coffee.

Next thing you know, you hit something, like one of those potholes that you need to pull over and check if you still have a tire, but the space version of that.

Your space craft delivers an ominous message.
This part was inspired by the community garden.

I was cruising the garden and this seemed perfect to add into my song.

Shout out FalseTragedian
"Here's a recording of a MicroFreak using the Plaits Speech model, reciting the NATO alphabet in a Bdim chord."

(check the discord! go to channels -> browse channels to find the chasing the beats channel to harvest or plant sounds)

Then, systems stabilize and everything turns out to be fine.
Maybe a hopeful message about the world, that things will get better.

Anyway, enjoying being back at it and interacting with this amazing community of supporting, uplifting and inspiring people.

The first week of tracks were full of certified bangers, can't wait to hear more this week!

I'm doing my best to respond to all the comments but focused more on leaving comments, so if you don't get a comment reply, it's still welcomed and appreciated!!!

The drum sample is so sick! Also digging the synth line that comes in around the 3 minute mark. Takin' this Space RV on a scenic detour

The higher pitched synth sounds for sure give me that soaring through space vibe and the upbeat bassline does give the feeling that everything is cruising along nicely.  I was waiting to see when we would hit the pothole and for me it probably happens around 2:22.  The drums drop out, the bass is trying to still carry us along but it's losing momentum.  And then the harsher synth sound hits.  The vocal sample sounds like the distress signal for sure.  But the good news is it seems like things were able to be fixed and we're back on our way by the end.  A delightful journey where even the obstacle is fun to listen to.

I really like this track!  I have to echo meutron in that the synth line at 3 really stood out to me. Great job!

Man, I was listening to those nice dreamy pads in anticipation in then that beat kicks in and, damn, it feels sooooo good. And man, the melody at 1:40! In general, I love the way you used delay throughout the track.

damn dude this is great!! sounds very full and balanced and nothing feels overly complicated. you've created a super groovy vibe, totally fits with the space cruise narrative! real nice job with the bass and lead sounds! i love that portamento, fantastic touch. your compositional skills are improving leaps and bounds!

I love how balanced the melody/counter-melody(???) sounded together smile those two leads sounded great together and the kick especially tied it all together smile

Space potholes forever in my brain now. My city is notorious for potholes. I'm sure there's some in orbit above us.

This is so groovy, and then wow, 2:45 with those big chords just after the NATO alphabet voice, really awesome! And your drums are on effing point dude. Awesome track!

You said "space RV" and my mind went immediately to Spaceballs:
Radar Man: Radar repaired, sir. We're picking up the outline of a...Winnebago.
    Dark Helmet: Winnebago? Lone Starr!

This was super uplifting and fun! I particularly enjoyed the break in the middle for the emergency message by the robotic voice, hahaha... Very good!

Love the jazzy vibes, and that delay on the lead around ~1:37 is awesome.  The whole track definitely has Masato Nakamura energy. Just a bop.

A fun ride! Made me think of japanese video game music, and I was already wondering where the impact would happen, when it happened. A cryptic message, and almost as if the computer was less angry and more sad about it. Then it’s gone, and all fun and games once more. Well composed!

hell yeah, SQF! this feels very confident and clear-eyed. those synth leads are soooo tasty

oooh hell yais i'm feeling the space traffic vibes heart  the bass with the drums is so good and then your signature leads!? love it! Also thoroughly enjoyed the lore to this mood.  Oooh 2:33 Engage space winnebago nao!
damn and the snare dancing with the leads after! this was a trip! faved heart

Love those dub vibes on the beat! Very game music -esque overall. Two thumbs up!

Really dig the drum/bass breakdown. Sounds great!

Damn Hyperspace Freighters tearin’ up the Mainways when they should be using the Gates, now we gotta deal with all them potholes(literal tears in space fabric) throwin’ off our Nav gear. Corpos always tryin’ to cut corners and we gotta deal with the mess..

It's almost got a little bit of an island vibe at parts. I like it a lot!

Mmm jazzy and dreamy

"Sorry fellas, my afternoon's booked!
There's this new track that SQF cooked,
and I keep hitting play
(I could listen all day)
'Cause those first three chords, they had me HOOKED!" big_smile

extremely smooth and epic progressions in this one, love the airy and elegant mood captured here!

Super chill track, well fleshed out. Awesome crunchy chords too.
Really cool fake-out ending and switch up halfway through!

oh wow SQF, what an amazing track!
great melody, the variation, progression, all so good!
the "w* *** ******" is the cherry on top! (dont wanna spoil it for those who wanna figure what robo said themselves)

I love the smooth bass and crunchy drums, but when those stabby synths show up opposite the loose string sounds I am 100% on board, potholes and all!

I love that drum groove, it's very interesting. Loved the phonetic secret message lol! Cool sound design. Great work SQF!

really nice grove love the supersaw strings!

Such a chill vibe, drums are great, really good lil pick-up grace note in the hat pattern gets two thumbs up, too. heart

The MicroFreak speech mode is also really cool, and I should share to cheat sheet sometime for M8-hex CC commands to get every letter of the alphabet for making up own words (if you’re interested).

Those drum samples are so tasty. The vibes on this are instant and chill. Space funk at 2:30 ruled.

Ok, so I was listening to Sade this week, I know, sometimes you have to right? Probably because of that, I thought of Sade when this started. That's a good thing, this song is a good thing. Good vibes good vibes, digging it. Love the bass line especially. Pot holes in space, that makes ya think!

yo this is rockin! lives in the dub territory but with nice guests from many exotic places! fav is the drum groove and nice bassline too! and very nice synths too! hahah love the alphabet! has a bit of that more cheezy space vibe like when they didn't really know much about the future so people on spaceships still used CRT monitors and huge colored buttons but they could make coffee too!

Those drums and bass hit hard yet smooth, great combination.  Very fun and lively track, certainly paints a picture in your head while listening.  The story and theme kind of reminded me of Space Dimension Controllers album "Welcome to Mikrosector 50", if you have some time highly recommend giving it a listen.

Those initial chords are so relaxing. The drums follow that character, which leaves a lot of space for the sharper lead tone to shine through. I like that you invested in complex melodic passages there, it makes it kind of a jazz fusion track. And that drum track really takes off after the "WE ARE FUCKED" message.

oh please get me into a space rv right now - i wanna put my sqf tape in the stereo & go float in the milky way a bit...

is there space AAA for flat tires in space?

RV in space is an amazing vibe
- Ebrit

Sweet sounds on this one.  Love the variable vibrato on the opening pad.  Something really nice about the drum space too.

Man the way the drums are mixed give them a lot of presence yikes

wearefucked
