The Old Lonely Sycamore

By Saguaro Gigante on December 31, 2025 1:51 am

Thought it would be nice to start the year with a flatpicking instrumental tune.I put out a couple acoustic instrumentals in 2024, and decided to try to make some more this year. I recently picked up the mandolin this last summer and have been having a lot of fun with it. This was a quick piece I came up with today. Figured out some chords I liked and then tried to come up with a melody to play over it. It's mandolin, guitar and bass. I tried to make it sound as close as possible to the sound of a trio playing together live, but that's a little difficult to do tracking everything one at a time. Hoping to use Weekly Beats as a way to practice more composition as well as improve my lead and rhythm playing with both mandolin and guitar over this year! Looking forward to a fun year of music with everybody!

Hey dude! Happy to see you're participating again this year smile
Damn dude, you're bluegrass chops have improved significantly since 2024. Cool to hear the mandolin incorporated too! I'm also impressed by the overall quality of the recording because it does sound like a pretty authentic jam of a trio playing together.
Keep twang'n

very live and alive ˗ˏˋ heart ˎˊ˗

I typed folk into the search hoping, and here I am listening with my jaw wide open. Fantastic tune me laddy!

wow this is executed really well. Really enjoyable listen.

Amazing! It was really refreshing to hear mandolin amongst the submissions.

Congrats!

Love the feel of this from the start.  I feel like I'm sitting in a saloon watching everyone dance and enjoy themselves to the live band.  Can't tell if I'm in the show deadwood or the witcher, it's so catchy.  The rhythm is so energetic and it's impossible not to hum or shake your leg in time.  Well done! Good to hear you back!

Nice playing and composition! Sick mando solo! Bluegrass such a fun style, I saw a jam with like 10 bluegrass players all just groovin on smth like this for a long time trading solos, it looked and sounded super entertaining!

I'm not sure it's worth as a solo musician trying to emulate the feeling of playing w other ppl past a certain degree. It will never sound real cause even if it does, you would just be good at copying your own groove. Playing with others involves other more exotic compatibilities and incompatibilities that make music magic. You can never get as excited alone as you can together with the right folks about anything. I question it in my own process a lot... Much more fun to play w folks! Fun exercise tho. It sounds convincing from your track!

Anyway, great track and looking forward to more!

such a beautiful ditty!

This is really great. Very impressive playing, and it sounds really nice too. Welcome back!

Nice playing and I really like how everything sits in the mix, fluid and good energy

nice! i feel inspired to learn an instrument!

Oh my goodness this is exceptional. Great playing & lovely composition that sounds like it should be an old favourite that everyone requests at local weddings.

Nice one, Big Cactus. This is very fun!

Thanks! I really like that instrument, hoping to use this year's weekly beats as a way to get more practice with it.

Glad you liked it! If it sounds danceable then I think it was a success!

Thanks for checking it out! Glad you liked it. I know what you mean about the not being able to replicated multiple musicians thing. Best I can hope for is to have the tracks blend in to each other smoothly enough that it's hard to hear where the takes begin or end.
