Islands in the Clouds

By Saguaro Gigante on April 10, 2022 10:40 pm

This week was a roller coaster! Spent several hours with no ideas on Monday and then at the end finally came up with something and got  a decent riff brainstorm. After a couple days of no arrangement ideas I tried to put together a rough sketch of the arrangement later in the week and it sounded like a mess with too many abrupt changes. Was considering that I may have needed to shelve this idea and start fresh. Instead I chose to stick with what I had and I think I managed to get something more cohesive towards the end. I spent so much time on composing and getting the performances down that I had very little time for mixing. I had planned to spend some more time on that before the deadline but I ran out of time, so the mix I have now will have to do! Right now I’m content with just getting a solid demo. This one is essentially a love letter to melodic death metal. The sound of the 90’s Swedish death metal scene has been a huge influence on me and I didn’t even try to hide it on this one.

That section around 2:20 when the lead guitar kicked in is where this really took off for me. A technique for you to try next time: Record two solid takes of your rhythm guitar on separate tracks, and hard pan them to the sides. it'll open up the center of the mix for your leads to stand out more.

That chord around 5:55 is super interesting and unexpected. Pulls my brain in a weird way, but then it becomes normal. Is that just a major where a minor is expected?

Great work! Must have been metal week. You, me, and ViridianLoom all went that direction.

Agreed, 2:20 is the point where I flipped back to the WB playlist tab to see what was playing. heart

Judging by the descriptions this week, just about everybody had trouble putting something together this week.  Maybe there's some kind of psychological hurdle about moving into the next quarter? hmm  Or maybe our lives all just a lot more busy and stressed now that the year's in full swing. tongue

I dig the hammer-on/slap guitar technique for the beginning section of the song. And then when the heavy guitar is first introduced at 1:06 I like the last measure has that unexpected chord landing. Also sounds like you started playing around with vst instrumentation around 1:30, like a organ or something? It definitely feels like the sonic spectrum opens up a ton right around 2:33, the bass cuts through nicely and gels really well with the lead and rhythm guitar. Really love those dual guitar harmonies at 2:55, that's really where it takes me back to those 90's Swedish death metal vibes. Mastodon influences showing through around 3:40. The motif for the ending section is pretty nice too and a nice way to round out the track. Good job this week smile

this is really fun, love the progression through the whole track, what a trip

Well. it's pretty fkn good. JS.

Glad you liked it! I will definitely try out that technique next time for sure. This week I had two rhythm guitars, two leads and a bass, and I was a little bit unsure of how to make all that sound good together without getting in the way of each other. As for the chords at the end, you guessed it! I did pull a minor to major switch! The chords in the first half of the outdo section are Bm - D - A, and then in the second have they go to B - G - A. Nice catch! I think I may start using that compositional trick more often, I do like the way it sounds. Also if you have any bass mixing tips that would be appreciated. I tried to take your advice from the last submission and try to get the bass louder this time. I think before I was afraid of having it blow the rest of the mix away, but I may have made it sit too far in the back on previous efforts.

That's so nice thanks! Having somebody stop to go check what is playing is really the best compliment I could hope for I think! And yeah I think my hangup last week was that I was really happy with what I had put out the week prior, and so I felt like I had to make good follow up. I think it's going to be important going forward to strike a positive balance between trying to get better and progress, but also not get too hung up on expectations. Thanks for listening!

Glad you liked that intro. I've actually had that idea for a long time now and just now found a home for it. Glad you liked that chord landing. This week I seemed to be playing with moving from minor to major tonality. I actually haven't started messing around with VSTs yet. I think what you are hearing is the combined effect of all the guitar tracks with their various reverbs and delays. Actually the first lead in the heavy riff sounds like I'm gallop picking the first note, but that's actually a sound that got created after I added delays. It's been really interesting to see how multiple recordings played at the same time sometimes make it sound like you are playing stuff in a different way than you actually were. I'm glad you thought the bass cut through, that was a major goal for me with this one. Glad you liked it!

This is absolutely epic. I'm glad you stuck with it, all that effort really shows.

Thanks so much! I have been trying to put a lot of time into this project for sure.

HUGE effort!  Kept my interest for the duration, great arrangement and energy.
