Nasty

By Paisleyfrog on February 22, 2026 11:35 pm

Let's do some trashy rock. I cut this one closer than usual.

It all started last week when I found this tiny little amp at a thrift store.

First Act is best known for the cheap combo kits found at department stores. Not exactly great pieces of kit. But, I'm always on the look out for new sounds. Also, Dave Grohl mentioned that one of his secret weapons on The Color and the Shape was a little plastic Marshall belt amp. Sure, let's try it. Didn't have a power supply, but I probably had one in my Box o' Bricks at home.

Get home, my power supply that's close enough is two volts low. Oh well, it'll just underpowered it and maybe make it break up more. Let's try it. Plug in the Epi SG.

IT SOUNDS AMAZING. OK, I guess we're making a track with this silly little thing. All guitar tones are miked with a condenser and only added effects are compression and reverb. Only DI instrument is the bass, and no MIDI!

Since I was going to be miking an amp, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try live drums as well. I have a drum kit. It is not a good one. But that's OK, I'm not a good drummer. Logic beat matching to the rescue. Due to the trashy nature of the song thus far, I give it a working name of Trashy.

The rest of the track took shape via text with my wife. I send her the first mix:

Wife: "That is delightfully filthy."
Me: "Needs some equally filthy lyrics. Maybe trashy is actually the title big_smile 'Sweet and maybe a little trashy'"
Wife: "Sweet in the streets but trashy in the sheets"
Me: "Ooooo"
Wife: "I kinda wanna sing that"

So here we are. I wrote up the words later that day and threw down a placeholder that night. She made some edits and sang it at 3pm on a Sunday after a weekend away. We both decided that "trashy" is a bit demeaning, so "filthy" and "Nasty" it is smile

Done...oh wait, it's 5:10 and I have to make cover art!

i've heard enough welcome back ZZTOP on the guitar

i think u got more out of this amp than anyone ever, song is great! i really love the idea of making a song with a bit of gear u found in a thrift shop too heart

Reminds me a lot of Josh Homme with the Peavey Decade - cheap amps really are capable of such really filthy tones. Love this, great job!

YUSSSSS I love this. Nice smooth garage rock with strong female vocals? Moar pls.
Honestly I was expecting more of a raspy growly vocal performance, but she went with an audible knowing smirk. That shifts the tone from judgemental to supportive and inclusive, which I also think we need moar of.

O dam, that's some high praise. Thank you! I've used found sounds from thrift shops before, but never built an entire song before - this was crazy fun smile

Thanks! My first amp ever was a Peavey Audition 20, pretty similar to the Decade...I loaned it to a bandmate 20 years ago and never got it back. I've had thoughts before of trying to replace it, but I don't think I need to anymore big_smile

I sent your comment to my wife and she texted back, "Oh yay! He totally got it!" We in no way wanted this song to be demeaning - it's supposed to be fun smile

My initial vocal take was the expected rasp, but my wife very much wanted to do these lyrics with a purr...which also set up a delightful contrast with the music. She very much had the idea of how she wanted to present this - she did the second take of the chorus and verses, and then reached over to stop recording before the end. "I like what I had before". I had the feeling of Junior Welles recording the solo for Urgent - engineer asks for a second take, and Junior is already putting his sax away. "You got what you needed." smile

Yo! This is really cool! Props to your wife for nailing this vocal part!!

Really great vibe all round!!

Well done!

DAMMIT. Wrong Junior - it's Junior Walker, not Wells.

Thanks!! I love the way she took this - fun and playful. I also think it’s the fastest we’ve ever done a vocal before - got home at 3, recording at 4, mixed down and finished by 5.

Serious boss moment, though. Junior Walker for the win (and he really did nail it)

Such a clean performance
I reckon you can put some pedals that are twice its size on it

Wow, brilliant track!!! Joan Jett meets ZZ top
Great how u can share your track with your other half, & she not just gets it, but adds such a great vocal! I'm now looking for a divorce & a new wife who can sing 😂🤣

ooof yes love the sound of the guitars with the drums and her powerful vocals \m/ well done!

The ZZ Top sound isn't for me. But the tune is decent. If you permit me some unsolicited feedback again, please read on.

After the bridge the tune is starting to repeat itself. I feel it could use something new there. A new solo, change of instrumentation. But not more of the same. I do think you tried to change things there. With her ooh and nasties being slowly taken over by the guitar. But I don't think you went far enough. With that kind of stuff it's "go big, or go home".

Speaking of that. Most of your tunes this year of WB feel big and powerful. But to my ears this mix sounds kind of harsh and brittle. Your Modern Day Slave Catcher has a heavy bass. And I feel this song could have used that kind of impact and weight.

I think the vocals could have been pushed forward bit a more in the mix. Maybe even at times doubled with a severely compressed/distorted version of them mixed quietly underneath them for additional impact. I think pushing them a bit louder will make them appear even more confident.

I realize this might seem like I'm hyper critical and being negative, but I assure you I'm not. It's given with the best of intentions. Your tunes are great! I just feel they could be even better if you lean into it more and get bigger.

It's really no different than saying to your rock 'n roll power stance is currently 50cm/20inches, while it should be 100cm/40 inches so the people at the back of the stadium can see you. And the people up close are awed by your confidence.

Musically you've got this. Now beef it up and be bold!

Anyway, that's just how I feel about it. And regardless of my feedback, mad respect for what you and your wife did here. Rock on!

Addendum:
About the rock 'n roll power stance I meant to add: It sounds like a lot. I mean going from 50cm/20inches to 100cm/40inches is doubling the length. But in reality, it's just small step forward. Easy to do.

Thanks! And, true facts. I don't have a ton of pedals, but I have a bass multi-effect that is easily bigger than this tony thing.

Thanks! Joan Jett was the first artist that really got into my head for hard rock - the first full length album I ever bought was I Love Rock 'n Roll. (Also, I know just how lucky I am - my wife and I share a LOT of music and creativity. It was one of the first things that drew us together heart.)

Thanks! This was such a fun experiment. I'll be using more miked amps and drums in the future smile

Thanks so much for the in-depth thoughts! Had me thinking in-depth about how I did this track...

On the whole, this track was a Grand Experiment - both in trying to use the tiny amp and miking as well, two things I've never done. I think the brittleness you're hearing is twofold: one, I made a conscious decision to get ALL the guitar tones from the First Act (it has a 4" speaker...), and that I used my condenser to mic it. It's an AT2020 - it has detail, but tends to be more brittle. Probably would have been better served by the SM58, I use that for warm. Also, much like how Dave Grohl used the little Marshall as secret sauce, I think this will be a great layering amp in the future - lay down another track for additional texture but mix it up with other amp models. I've had better bass tone this year as well, and I used something of a garage/punk patch for the bass here. Once again, maybe a little thin smile

I felt like I could use something more at the end, but went towards short and simple and not overworking. Get it done. Part of what I'm trying to do this year is get songs done FAST and not overthinking. I have a bad habit of getting into my own head! I'm keeping your GET BIGGER suggestions in my mind...eventually I will do both, write fast and get huge smile

As far as the vocal mix - I had an hour and a half to record and mix smile I think it's good, but I would have liked to leave it sit for a day and listen again in the morning.

Thanks so much for your thoughts! I'm in no way taking them as hypercritical, they're good observations and given me some great ideas on things I can do in the future. Rock on!

Ooo, i'm sorry to flirt with your wife a little, but she has the sexiest nonchalant voice i've ever heard!
This song is dope! I couldn't help but read an earlier comment about 'going big', and while i don't have the same exact critical feedback, i'd just like to add that for weekly beats(all done within a week), it's often a big ask to do that, perhaps most songs on weeklybeats could use 'going bigger' whenever we want to take them away from weeklybeats to an actual stage, but for weeklybeats what you and your wife have done here is nasty massive!
Extra props for finding such a tiny amp, and really doing the research within studio to see how you'd create good sound from it.
Nice work all around! heart

I mean... its a great frigging track and so happy to hear mrs. frog again and the plastic amp is awesome BUT

You can and have been much, much, much filthier and disgusting and more nasty.

I challenge ye hence to deliver me atrocious levels of filth, and I promise to deliver some filthy, spit-spraying, sweat-dripping, sex-oozing minotaur vocal techno nonsense by... end of april? I think I can manage that lol

heart you both

I KNOW, RIGHT? (Also, I told her that, and she said I should pass on that she feels consensually flirted with.

Thank you!! I like thinking in terms of both the macro and the micro - the small-scale goals I had for this track like amping and miking and drums, but then also thinking in terms of what I can do to push myself and get better on a larger scale. I love comments and thoughts like that, they can be amazing challenges to take on smile

Speaking of amazing challenges...

CHALLENGE FUCKING ACCEPTED. I can yea verily feel the gauntlet wherens't it hath been flung across my face forthwith.

You're entirely right, this one could have been a LOT nastier...of course, the Nasty was a bit of an afterthought, rather than the initial goal. We will have to amend that. It's been a while since Mrs Frog (can you hear her yell, "that's Dr. Frog!" from there?) and I have written a steamy, greasy rock song. Discussions have begun, we might have to do a split vocal on this one....

Also, I gotta say....I love it when you drop a comment that includes "I mean" and "but"...because it means that you're about to send me in a crazy new direction I would not have really considered.  heart heart heart

that lil amp sounds killer!

I missed this during the weeklymeets stream as I was falling asleep at the phone. Timezones! Oh well, I got to this today and I can confidently say the title is 100% accurate. And hello Dr. Mrs Paisleyfrog! Looking forward to hearing more of those vocals.

Funny how meaty this little amp sounds in the end product, no wonder you went for an old-school rocker track after hearing what it can do. A great find, I'd say!

Finally, kudos for pulling off the instrumentation on here without digital crutches (like I do), that's some genuine multi-instrumentalist musicianship. No notes, five stars.

This is just so good. On weeklymeets I knew I had to come back to this one.
Tiny amps rule and so does this.

Great track and a great story for how it came together! Making the random thrift store find glow and growl, and then a lovely collab with the wife. That is how art and life should work!

Crazy, isn't it? I've always done things in-box, but this silly little amp has made a cab-miking believer out of me smile

Dr Frog will definitely be back....we love making music together smile

And thanks! This amp was a shock. I know little amps can pack a punch, but that's usually of the tube variety. And speaking to digital crutches - I may have played drums, but I leaned heavily on timing alignment to make it all work....drum crutches smile I had a ton of fun playing drums, and Weekly Beats is an awesome place to try things out. I'll be back to them later smile

Guitar gang! Thank you so much, it was a ton of fun to make trashy garage rock.
