Big Flat Ridge

This one was written and recorded in one Saturday evening session after I threw out what I'd recorded on Friday. I'd had the thought of pulling out the 2000s Danelectro baritone guitar after a long period of not using it, and rejected that thought at first. I tracked a number of things with the home-built Res-O-Glas, and...it just wasn't coming together. An experiment of guitar through my Max feedback patch also wasn't satisfying, so Saturday I went back to the original impulse: time for the baritone.

This one's three tracks of baritone (neck pickup, bridge pickup, both) with the vintage overload circuit of the UA Volt turned on for a bit of crunch. I tracked a number of themes, with a few of the more rhythmic lines kind of taking over the piece. I thought of doing a few effects sends in Live, but ended up sticking with a bit of convolution reverb as the sole effect.

The title comes from Big Flat Ridge in Pennsylvania, with an elevation of 629 m.

Beautiful deep sounds!

I mistook the baritone for a bass. It has a really nice sound! Great interplay of melodies and rhythms.

Thank you! I have this baritone tuned A-A, so a fifth below standard guitar tuning--definitely in the bass range, if not Bass VI range.

Love how clean it all sounds. I am a sucker for the string noise. And the use of the stereo space is nice. Some of the elements are having their side conversation from left to right channels.

Love the tone of those lower bassy chords.  Excellent groove and soulful melody.  Such a good mix and love the placement of the guitars.  Those low notes vibrating out \m/

Another very solid piece.

I'm actually IN the movie while this plays
love the Danelectro bari heart

Loving the “purity” of the sound of having all of the tracks from the same instrument. Wonderful perpetual feeling in the composition. Diving in for a second listen.

gah - that baritone is so nice!
