six fathoms deep - featuring JWH (spooky season five)

By neon liminal on November 3, 2024 10:48 pm

A huge thank you to my good friend the fantastically talented JWH who graciously lent me his vocals and a couple of his lyrics for this weeks track and I confess - I'm not sure I did them justice, they sound so good, and spooky as per the spirit of the season! I have long wanted to compose an echo or response of Josh's track whispering xians, and while I'm not sure this is that echo, I felt like I needed to borrow a couple lines from his song at least once for spooky season, because it's truly a chilling, haunting melody.

This track is not really that haunting or chilling lol. But it's a bit spooky. Composed entirely on the M8, and rendered from there straight to a master - no time to mix in DAW this week. The M8 is a fantastic tool for this kind of music - there's things you can do on it (namely switching instruments on a per-note basis within the same track) that you simply can't do in most DAWs, and it really lets you play around with the glitchy interrupted motif a lot of mid-tempo bass music employs. It's also making me wish I had a larger sample library lol.

After a month of diving into mid-tempo bass/techno, I've learned a lot and come to a couple of conclusions - there's way more to learn, and a week - with my time constraints - is not enough time for me to execute successfully on this genre. The more I learned, the more scrutinizing I became of the arrangement and while I made gains, these last few tracks have been right up against the wire to upload, at a cost of critical listening time and a deeper mastering effort. I'm gonna keep at this type of music because I really enjoy it and it's a great intellectual challenge, but I'm gonna give myself a little more time to work on whatever I try next for it. Thank the elder gods for the gift that is the M8.

Rambling. This coming week might be something less stressful and more ambient lol.

i feel like you are both summoning ophelia back out of the river

this is rad!

OH WOW! Favoriting this one!!! That's an awesome Industrial track. You create a heavy foreboding and cinematic track. The intro with the rain and the singing is perfect. And that riff from 1:15 is perfect. The saw at 2:00 is great too, like a giant electric animal in dark sky punctuated by electric blue thunderbolts. And arps at 2:30! You're making my day, this is just a fantastic journey.

Now i need a whole album of that stuff.

Everything he said ^ ^ ^ ^

Loved your October tracks. All of your Spooky Season tracks have had an amazing presence to them, and this one is no different. jwh's vocals in here are the perfect touch, like wind through a brown cornfield. A fitting end to October...well done!!

Well... I mean this track is just about as mid-tempo as it gets... This track is DOPE!!! The bass when that first drop hits... dude... dirty... instant stank face.  I mean there is always more progress to make, but you have done a great job of dialing in that hard hitting dubby, industrial mid-tempo sound.

Hail yais! \m/ such thickness in that synthline yikes instant head nodder.  Really cool hearing jwh's vocals with the fx and atmosphere.  Ooof the extra higher synths sound so good! Spooky yais and bad ass!  Always enjoy hearing those dark and gritty sounds.  Fav'ed n Sav'ed smile

an absolute honor for me heart
your work on this track is incredible and i really don't have the proper words.
thank you for bringing me along for this wild spooky ride!

Great goth dancey track!

I'll also put my hand up saying I'd love to hear a full album of this, it is really fucking good.  I'd hands down DJ this track in a darkwave set or use it as the come up or come down from a nasty industrial one, it would sound amazing on club speakers.  Seriously good work

I'm sad spooky season is coming to an end, you've really crushed the spooky music. Love the JWH collab. All hail the m8 elder gods.

Yes this image!

Oooh, this is niiice ... Hell yeah when that bass drops, and the beat, that got me good. But that spooky intro, the river, sinking words and imagery, super freakin rad. The synch at 2:30, roll on. Shout out to jwh, great collab, yes!

The music is an absolute banger, the addition of the vocals adds so much, in particular how it's typically absent in much of this style of music.  Dope stuff!

photek slowburn is one of my favorite songs ever and this reminded me of it right away. you have such a sick track here, favorited and downloaded

honestly i'm at a loss for words, it's so good

Thank you! I'm still having fun so there will probably be an album forthcoming. No idea how it'd sound on club speakers though lol

Thank you! Yeah I decided to go full lyrics/vocals as much as possible this month just for fun. It is a little less-present in the genre.

Thank you heart So glad you enjoyed it!

yes perhaps more fitting this 'longdrawn carol' wink

"A longdrawn carol, mournful, holy,
She chanted loudly, chanted lowly,
Till her eyes were darken'd wholly,
And her smooth face sharpen'd slowly,
       Turn'd to tower'd Camelot:
For ere she reach'd upon the tide
The first house by the water-side,
Singing in her song she died,
       The Lady of Shalott."

thinkin' of you this week - seems like we have a national spell to break - pick up your feet and dance heart
