Sambesque

What? No M8? How dare.
Everyone has been experimenting with different devices, techniques, recording methods and all that, so I figured I'd dust off my Tenori-On, revive a WIP from 4 years ago and finish the poor thing. Audio is straight out of the TO and into my LS-P5 recorder (and it's a little hot, sorry). I did a few takes recording in the TO's Song recorder (it literally records the full performance; button presses, screen, etc.) so that I could get myself out of the way for the video. This was take 6 because I'm bad at things.

Wait, did I say "video?" Since the TO is largely a visual instrument, I recorded a quick & dirty video in the barn loft when I was supposed to be doing chores. It would have been more interesting if I switched the display to something other than the percussion....

This is so groovy, nice stuff. Love to see the Tenori-on in action.

Go stand in the naughty corner!! 😂... Hang on a minute, hmmmm , M8 not required if u have talent!??! Great track.... (Goes back to M8 to make random phrases 😂) 🩵

Interesting metallic sound that really ground the groove.

Fun track, and it looks like an instrument I wouldn't learn... lol

It feels a bit like factory/industrial music cartoon. It's super unique.

The visuals are super cool yikes

Oh man Tenori-on, that unlocked some memories. Happy to stumble upon them. This is very industrial level of a SNES game. Loving it.

Very groovy, I like!

Also, came here to say that until I heard you on the Chasing the Beats podcast I always thought that your name reads as Mr Dr Cat 😅

This is so much fun. Seriously put me in a good mood.

Nice one !!! The track is so playful - a lot of 90s IDM vibes I dig !

That main beat is really cool! I like the contrast with the bass and synth melody that are more... tropical islandish, like a coconut island in a snes game. I loved the break at 2:26 with the sync between the percussions and melodies.

Now I kinda want to hear Rumbesque, Salsesque and Merenguesque as well. Very cool track!

o man, I haven't thought of the Tenori-on in years. I used to have the ipad version at one point but never could get into it. rad to hear someone who's actually made something on one.

great beat, MRDRCAT

The percussion in the intro reminds me of early NIN. Blinkenlights galore!

Thanks! This device just invites play. Mine is pretty junky (lots of cracked buttons and some very bad corrosion) but still going strong!

(thanks friend!)

It's a wild combination of inviting and opaque. The control scheme is a little odd, but the sequencer has all these playful modes that make polyrhythms and other odd sequencing very easy. Plus it's pretty!

Now that you mention it, it does kind of evoke the Powerhouse theme Carl Stalling used for the Looney Tunes factory scenes! The Tenori-On is built for visuals - literally! The back of the device has a mirror image of all the lights so if you perform with it live your audience can see them, and you can assign different light patterns and behaviours to different instruments (which I did not do).

Thanks! I keep meaning to unload this one, but then I pick it up and lose a couple hours. It's not a desert island synth, but it's a fun friend to hang out with.

Ha! You are in good company - Trash80 introduced me as Mr Dr Cat on a Discord meet and he felt so bad about it (but it was super funny). I think more people see Mr Dr Cat than Murder Cat, but I will answer to either one.

This is a huge compliment, thank you!!

Aw yeah! I was having too much fun with the sequencer on this. It's tough to make the Tenori-On sound bad.

It started out as a spy idea (the bass) but I had too much fun with the percussion so it went in that direction as well and ended up in a weird place that I quite enjoyed!

Ooooof I'll have to learn more rhythm. That's a tall order!

Thanks! The hardware is a lot of fun to use, but I haven't tried the iPad version. I think they've stopped supporting it, so it might be too late for me. If you still have the app, fiddle around with the different sequencer modes. They're super cool!

Thank you! You're not so bad yourself wink

I hadn't even thought of that! Yeah there's some wild found sounds there. I think the previous owner added some custom samples (there are a few user slots) so I might have got lucky. I really should use this little thing more often - I forgot how easy it is to get lost in the blinkies!

I definitely support putting off chores to make music! Nice to be reminded that there is more to life than M8 ... although, I'm pretty happy with M8 and the moment. Really fun groove on this one too!

One of the fun parts of WB is hearing the results of people using different sorts of devices, many of which I am not familiar with.  I don't know anything about the Tenori-On, but it sounds pretty cool to me.  This track has a fun playful vibe and hits on a nice groove all with an interesting sound texture.  Nice one.

The feel off this track is just so fun and unique. I love how you play with the various parts. Dropping the bass at times, bringing in new melodic parts. So cool!

Love the percs and that bassline heart. Really fun track smile
