twist the knife

By MaisieMarra on January 25, 2026 5:08 pm

didn't feel like putting an AMV style video or anything together this week; i got a bit lost making this one and it didn't turn out the way i hoped. i tried to do some sort of doomgaze track and while i think there are some nice ideas, it just didn't come together in the end. i did learn a lot, especially about trying to get a good guitar sound out of ableton live, and it's another demo done; so not all is lost heart

› lyrics + season 4 spoilers

I know the feeling of not being quite happy with a submission, but this is really good and I think you should be proud. I love the moody acoustic guitar and the dynamic bass line. Your vocals are beautiful. Lyrics and phrasing so good, as always. Even if it's not your favorite, I dig it! Well done.

i really love that chorus, and the guitars sound so good!!!!

the pacing is great and really builds the drama leading up to the chorus which just sends us sooooooaring!!

Wow that transition at 1:21 is great, and the vocal processing is really dope.  I definitely know that "I wanted to make X, and I ended up with this... and it's not what I wanted to make"... but as someone who doesn't have access to your internal experience, and so can't know what you intended really... it's still a pretty damn good track.  Very much in the doomgaze genre... and I think you really nailed the washy reverb effect, without masking the vocals [b]or[\b] the guitar parts, which is pretty tricky.

It did make me wonder how long we are gonna have to wait for the MaisieMarra, ViridianLoom colab though... (´∀`)

Hell yeah. Super cool tune and I love the gothy vox. That bass lick is SOOOOO tasty too.

Track immediately reminded me of some of your work. @MaisieMarra, if you do not follow @ViridianLoom yet, I am confident you'll like what he does...

Excellent arrangement, it feels great.

this is cool, your vocals?

what are you using to compose? fav

Oooooh this is cooool! The guitar is awesome, both the more shoegazey parts and the heavier parts. That progression is also really haunting and tense in a really tasty way, and your vocals are so angelic and ethereal. This is so good!

ooof the harmonies that support your main vocals are so good. especially enjoy when the guitars kick in and everything opens up.  the drums with the harmonies such a chill feel that had me nodding along.  excellent hero vibes with the outro guitar. like the main character just lit a match, cue flames.  Had to listen again for those outro chords.  I think it sounds great as is! smile

yeah mixing this was much harder for me, don't think i quite got there. the transition to the chorus i think is the weakest part of it, something is wrong i'm just not quite good enough to understand what and it drove me a bit crazy :')

would be cool to do something with viri sometime! there are 52 weeks (:

Excellent arrangement, it feels great.

they have been consistently one of my favorites this year (: was really trying to replicate a finnish girl called shedfromthebody i'm absolutely obsessed with but it did not work out like that heart

they are smile i use ableton live and an sm58. everything is just stock plugins and i've got a squire tele and bronco that go direct line into a scarlet solo. it's very much the bedroom bitch setup.

Fantastic mix. Love the washy reverb that never gets out of control, and vocals and guitar are awesome. That transition at 1:21 is AMAZING, turns emotions to 11. Love your work!

THE ONLY REAL-REAL SETUP

Just catching up on your stuff. Mindblowing how much mileage you get out of the "bedroom bitch setup." It actually sounds pretty pro to me! Your writing is great, I really admire how you make so much from so little.

awesome production, feels ripped straight from mtv tbh

solid!!!! drums sick, guitars sick, vocals v good

You nailed the doom gaze thing, sounds awesome.  Especially the chorus, the production reminds me of A Perfect Circle.

i know this is a little bit outside of ur wheelhouse and u don't feel super confident about it but the song here at the core is sick and if u pushed it a lil further with the production and made everything work together a little more i think it would really work. the melodies on this are really great but i think it needs a little more meat a lil more sauce like ur sooo close and maybe that last bit is just confidence but maybe it's just more loud guitar and loud drum idk im just yapping out loud

Fiancé is taking over this week's comment because it's IMPORTANT: This is amazing, beautiful, sublime, and sounds like what actually would be playing in the show as Dark Betty plots revenge murder on behalf of the martyred Saint Jugulus (actually that last bit was ineff).  This is the sound of someone about to set the World On Fire in response to a terrible wrong and everyone is going to grimly cheer when she does it. +fav

thanks so much!! sometimes it's nice to keep things simple smile getting more and more out of it as time goes on!

haha i love y'all thank you heart u will never get away with taking Saint Jugulus heart

From Mazzy Star through CHVRCHES to A Perfect Circle in five weeks, all the while keeping it artistically consistent? What can I say. You're a pro and you know it. So I'll focus on something else today.

It's such a great hack to base lyrics on a piece of fiction. I've never tried, but it looks like doing that is a good way to overcome writer's block and avoid self-consciousness about shit getting too personal and/or cringey. At the same time, it probably takes as much skill as any writing. Especially if the end result skillfully avoids references that would funnel it too narrowly into fanfic territory.

Brilliant.

thank you heart i did sort of do the first one as a joke tbh, but ended up finding it very helpful. It solves the blank page problem lyrically which can be hard to overcome with very limited time. normally when i work on maisie marra music i create the story first, and then i basically write fanfiction about that, so i really just cut out the first step to make it easier to do in a week (: worth trying if you have a show you are enjoying that meshes with your sound !!

probably will change to something other than riverdale at some point this year, i can't see myself doing 52 riverdale songs haha

Love your vocals, this was really fresh to hear, blows me away can put this together in one week, thank you, looking forward to more.

I completely enjoyed this one. With some additional engineering effort this will pop the way you intended.

Delicious vocals and a great bassline. You deliver week after week. It is a great track IMHO.

My little 2 cents when it comes to Ableton drum production: the double kick drum fill in the beat could use some work on the MIDI programming (if you were going for a more natural sounding drum) so not all the kicks are so steady and perfect. It is the only thing that, during the verses, gives out the "virtual drumming" away. My little advice is linking some low pass filtering to the kick and control it using velocity, so softer hits produce a more muffled sound.

Anyway, my little advice only goes that far. I wouldn't even know how to begin doing 90 percent of the magic you do on every track.

Really liked this one, even if it's considered "just demo material".

i feel like i tried to watch riverdale once - but tapped out - i might be confusing it with another show in my mind... anyhow - this exploration is FASCINATING from someone who's only attachment to the story is through the eyes of these tracks... enjoying your exploration MaisieMarra!

this is fkn awesome.

I love how heavy this is. Your voice sears above the chords so perfectly. Your arrangements are so on-point it kills me.

I can't even quite make out the vocals, but who cares, it's real pretty.

Slick revenge track. That pitch-bending guitar part is super smooth!
