hold me close

By MaisieMarra on February 1, 2026 10:46 pm

first of all, thanks to my friend monkboyking for making some art for this one, it's absolutely incredible heart (he's not happy it's riverdale)

thank u also to david lynch for the mantra "never forget an idea or you'll kill yourself". the final section of this song sort of sucked but i had a dream with the call and answer thing and wrote it down the second i woke up heart

riverdale fan account continues. based this one on FP jones. we don't really know a lot about his childhood other than that his dad kicked him out, so for this i tried to imagine what that might be like on prom night. wanted to make a very slow dance 80s ish song for him heart

lyrics:
thrown out the door
he told you to go to hell
but you're an angel i can tell
painting the floor with 9mm shells

dressed up to kill
but out in the cold
would you dance with me?
show how bright you glow

let that halo glow, and hold me close
you can let them talk, we'll put on a show

they won't ever know,
what you've been through
it's a cruel fucking world, and he took it out on you

put my, hands on, your chest
(make me say please)
Let me, feel your, warm breath
(i'm on my knees)
moonlight, watch-me-get, undressed
(make me say please)
ur touch, i am, obsessed
(i'm on my knees)
x2

OMG. The music video, the vibes... this is incredible.

awesome vibes on this and VERY nice vocals!

This is crazy good, once again.
- Valx

such a great song! congrats!

Flipping excellent!

Awesome track - so much emotion in the lyrics!

I'm always loving this tracks. You got the slowcore vibe dialed the fuck in. So dreamy, and the guitar tone is great. The slide is mwah, chefs kiss. All in the box, or do you have a pedal board/amp set up?
Oh, and perfect voice for this kind of music. I'd love it if you'd be willing to collab with me in the future on a song! I was making a bunch of darkwave/etherealwave in 2024 and I might get back to it again sometime this year, and I think you'd be a great fit for that. Or whatever, doesn't have to be goth music. Lemme know! wink

Oooooh loving the 80's vibes on this one! Your instruments sound really good and I love your vocals. Well done once again!

Flawless. This is epic. Please keep cranking out Archieverse bangers.

You're still killing it with that guitar, but I love those hard panned synths. I'd really love to see a breakdown of your process. I'd love to get the guitar tones you get!

your tracks are always so well done. Certified banger

omfg we went down a proper rabbit hole over here trying to figure out who the heck "FP Jones" is. After some googling, we came up with this gem of a guy:

We were agog that the (mysteries comic) fan wiki we found noted that this ambiguity also exists in their continuity, although with slightly different details:

FP's background was not heavily discussed in this continuity, but he apparently comes from a long line of male relatives who were known for their laziness and sloppy habits above all else; both of which are traits that he would end up passing onto his son, Jughead Jones. He raises his son alongside his much more active and strict wife, Gladys Jones, in the little town known as Riverdale.

…I think it's safe to assume that any song dedicated to that guy's prom wouldn't be as gloriously poignant as this week's track.

Minds were further blown when Fiancé dug up a one-off issue of Archie where Jughead takes over his dad's gang, and opined that monkboyking's illustration is way better than this: (Although to me, that cover looks suspiciously like the guy who played Mr Darcy in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film wearing a 20s-style burger king crown)

Biiig "I can fix him" vibes! big_smile

But for real - how do you do it every. Time?? This is so lush and delicious and warm and sad... Really love it.

That bass is so dreamy. Nailing it with those 80s prom night vibes. Hauntingly good melody on that synth line, too.

When Netflix reaches out to me to produce a teenage drama you're on speed dial.

so beautiful as always but omg this one made me feel emotional! amazing

Your voice is specially beautiful in this one.

As I am not a native english speaker, it is easier for me to get lost on the musicality of the words, because a second language always demands extra concentration. No disrespect to your writing at all, though the harmonies were so evocative of nostalgia that it was even hard for me to focus on the words. I had to read them twice while listening in order not to drift away in the cadence of the song.

Now its raining heavily in Madrid and your music is banging loud on 11 inch speakers. Its music for perfect moments smile

Truly amazing work

thank you! heart slide is really simple stock ableton plugs smile just a bic lighter on my telecaster and this rack. (just a default chorus and some volume boost from the utility)

I love ur music too it would be cool to do something! probably have to be end of march / april time, having to move across the country at the start of march so i think the next few weeks are going to be rough weekly beats wise ^.^

your synth sounds have been amazing! all of the ones here i made with wavetables in ableton, would be happy to show how i made them smile

guitar tone isn't too complicated either! it's all done with stock ableton plugins recorded direct line in thru an audio interface, with one little trick. i think ableton's biggest problem is the stock cabinet plugin sucksssss, but you can use the impulse response from another amplifier through hybrid reverb if you put it into convolution mode. this is using a mesa 2x12, but you can find impulse responses for loads of amps online smile this is the full rack anyway smile

haha oh my god the research!! looking at that picture like "THAT'S MY GUY" :')

i love the contrast between riverdale lore and archie comics lore, riverdale actually just said "what if his dad was an alcoholic instead of sleepy". CRAZY WORK. I had no idea the jughead taking over his dads gang thing existed in the actual archie comics though oh my god, WHAT A FIND with that cover! I think my friend absolutely blew it out of the water, especially with the colors, but I love seeing this!

lol i love you both so much, i'm learning so much deep archie lore.

he will fix himself !! heart thank you so much though, I think the secret is spending too much time on them :')

i don't think i am the clearest singer in the world to be fair! i'm trying to work on it a little bit and actually enunciate what i'm saying!

hope you enjoyed the rain in beautiful Madrid too heart

"got a lighter?"

*silent stare*

Also want to add it's real nice you're being so open about your set-up. Love that heart

Five stars, obviously. So I'll just nitpick for the hell of it.

The very end sounds like the e-piano bit wants to take flight and then it gets immediately faded out. I get it, it's hard enough to make 3 minutes worth of audio per week, but I think this deserves an extended version. I want to hear that afterglow outro.

Oh, and that wailing synth moment's just chef's kiss.

SO GOOD!!!!

Oh, thanks for such quick reply. Your diction is perfectly clear. I meant that as a sincere complement refering to the evocative quality of the tune. I'm really really enjoying your songs.

Also extra kudos for sharing your rack tips. I wasn't aware of the usage of impulse responses when it comes to cabinets (maybe because I'm still sticking to Live 10, mostly).

i mean, come on!
consider this my album pre-order commitment

Ok, at this point we can all agree that we're going to the first MaisieMarra concert, right?
This is really, really beautiful. Stellar job! Really impressed with the quality and depth of the stuff you've been putting out on WB.

oof love that high synth that comes in around 1:24.  the sway of the beat with those awesome guitars is such a hypnotic dreamy effect.  Maybe it's the video but just the atmosphere of smoke and fog in the air and dreamy montage vibes. Also really inspiring to see you're doing all of this in ableton with stock plugins and the sm58.  I don't think I'll be singing often this year but I hope to get my abletons in order so I can feel a bit more confident mixing it.  Favorite line, "it's a cruel fucking world, and he took it out on you"  heart Excellent song! An album of this would rock!

such a smooth music love it !!! congratulations

That track is like a hot soft heavy blanket on a cold day.

You put lots of care in this year challenge and we can hear it.

Keep it up! you rock.

Wow this has SO much atmosphere. I could just melt into this beautiful swelling soundscape.

thank u so much everyone for the nice comments this week, means a lot to me heart

i think sharing ur knowledge and process is extremely weekly beats heart i don't think hybrid reverb was added until 11, not sure how you would use the impulse responses in earlier versions! convolution reverb also wasn't added until sometime in 11 either sad assume there is an external plugin available though for accommodate this (:

one of these days! would actually be very cool to do a weeklybeats concert at the end of the year with people performing two or three songs each from the year... i expect geography might have smth to say abt that though!

i loved making that lead patch so much! it's made with wavetables and a little chorus and pan after for some extra wobble. i'll post the rack below but it's just a lot of lfo's on things like pitch to give it some wobble, and a big sweep envelope on the filter to open each note up. not an expert but it looks something like this!

really loved the track you did with vocals too, always a nice thing to try for weekly beats (:

I feel like there is going to be a surge in people watching this show. I know I am curious about what all this is about. Another awesome track. Keep it up!

This is beautiful. The vocals, the guitar, the bass, the synths. All of it is so lovely.

really really nice!

Thanks for sharing the processing pics, always awesome to see/read how folks are doing putting their productions together.  And I'm with Tone, that synth lead that comes in at 1:24 stopped me in my tracks, just sounds so good.  And the little saturation/noise swells (like at 2;12), such a nice touch.

Wow, this is amazing. I've been really into dream pop like this lately.  Love it.

you're in the stratosphere at this point. maybe we'll all catch up.

hell yea!

vocals, synths, effects ON POINT.

david lynch is very good too

This is beautiful. I get all peacefully and cozy on my couch

Beautiful. Really enjoyed this, and because of what Lynch said I have innumerable notes ans recordings in the strangest places all over my life.

He last section doesn't suck at all - but I think the double time call-and-response demands one last, mournful, slow-tempo ending vocal just to bring us all back down. Lynch would approve!

You got a solid command over the entirety of this sound and style, I love it, Props!

Amazing.

love that you are dreaming in song - jwh does this a lot - it's such a cool gift

outstanding. perfect vibe!

Stock plugins, sounds designed from scratch in stock synths... Yeah, you are just flexing on us at this point. Taste, talent,  production on another level

phew! it's so strange to me that this smoldering tune is somehow based on the derpy comics I enjoyed as a derpy kid. Great work

Slowly catching up on the weeks I missed, and this one's just so magical. Beautiful stuff!
