high school football song

By MaisieMarra on January 15, 2026 10:53 pm

tried a new process this week; i spend 20 mins each on Monday working on a few simple 20-30 second ideas, then picked the one i liked the most to work on during the week. these songs do take me quite a bit of time, usually between 5-10 hours so it helps to make sure the initial idea is at least passable heart I'm not a particularly fast songwriter, and between work it can be tough if i start something only to hate it. can recommend trying this if you haven't already !

i also learned how to use a fucking compressor correctly to even vocal levels this week; i was hitting it way too hard in the past which might have cut a lot of sounds and made it less clear sounding. learning is fun, i think my technical skill is surprisingly low. it's all vibes and smashing my head against the wall until i make a hole heart

for week 3, i wrote a song about reggie from riverdale and putting all of ur hopes into something like football. please can we just forget about all this stuff and just go for a drive. i feel like at least in the earlier seasons (i'm only in 4 at the moment) he gets a bit of a bad wrap and his main purpose seems to be as someone the viewer is annoyed at or frustrated with sad

thanks so much to everyone taking part this year! it's my first time trying and it's been such a blast so far heart

lyrics:
my baby's had it tough, you can count the scars
but now he's a high school football star
i cheer him on wearing town pride royal blue
(cuz) it's a big life baby but I'll only dream of you

spend the cold nights in the back of his chevelle
i don't dress for the weather cuz he keep me warm instead
(i think ur so fit, baby let it go to your head)
won't talk about it, but I know he's going thru hell
it's a long life baby before you end up dead

my baby's had it tough, you can count the scars
but now he's a high school football star
i cheer him on wearing town pride royal blue
(cuz) it's a big life baby but I'll only dream of you

This is the greatest song ever recorded. So, congrats, that's kinda neat right.

This could slot into the Drive soundtrack with such ease. Fantastic work, vocals sound great heart heart heart

dang and a music vid! great vocal treatment too! your voice sounds great. the guitars sound dreamy as hell too

This is so freaking good, love the guitar and the synthwave vibes

your riverdale project is shaping up to be a 10/10. so so so beautiful!!!!

amazing work!!!

Lol... learning is fun... and one of my profs was fond of saying "there's really only one rule with audio engineering... if it sounds good, it is good"... and this track for sure sounds good.  The vocal treatment is particularly nice this week.  I love the way you layered the reverb between the main vocal and harmonies/adlibs, it creates a really nice washy dreamy effect. I also like the idea of creating thumb bunch of "thumbnail sketech" to decide what to focus on... I may give that a try.

The shift towards something more upbeat this time is pretty rad. These riverdale inspired tunes are great. I didn't notice any issues with the vocals in past weeks, in fact I think if parts of the vocals were slightly buried before then it blended nicely into the density of the tracks. That's actually something I quite like with your music so far, it feels like you fill up the space in the mix super nicely with your arrangements.

3 weeks in and you're completely unstoppable.

What a track…Fantastic writing and production, feels of late 80s pop in the best ways.

Lovely.

For a more Pop song like that, I feel you could pull your vocal even more in the mix. (And yeah compression is a bitch, what works good for me is to "stack" compressor, you can bring everything up a lot without affecting too much the source doing so)

Continue to hit the wall hard enough and the hole will be as big of a door... You'll be fine.

You do terrific work so far. Keep it up.

So good!

Really love the arp bells that answer the vocals in the chorus. You've got yourself a hot streak. So good.

ur growing! ur glowing!

A great song again! Lovely vocals and a pleasant sounds to accompany them. I especially like the sound of the bassline on this one.

I think i'm basically just making bootleg AMV videos but with riverdale clips! they aren't anything special, but take me an hour or two to put together! heart

if it sounds good, it's good is the ultimate truth! heart really recommend the thumbail sketch thing too! trying to make the first hour after i finish work on monday stay free for this! it's very nice if you don't have a specific idea for a track one week.

thanks! i love making slowcore the most, but it's really fun to try something different! I think my problem was subtle but I had the attack on the compressor way to aggressive so it was cutting out some of the more plosive sounds a bit too aggressively!

thanks! heart classic 80s pop song was exactly what i was aiming for!

ngl the midnight were a big inspiration for trying something like this lol i love them heart

The vibe hits from the first note. The crowd noise is a perfect garnish to set the tone of what is coming. This is excellent.

Incredibly polished for 5-10 hours, a few guitars, and an SM58. Favorite part is the outro. You are raising the bar

this sounds so good! love how the drums cut through the bass and your cool vocals.  excellent transition oof! and such lovely sounding guitars got me feeling the 80s.  Well done! also yay sm58!

Maybe you say you're not very skilled technically, but your songs sounds quite polished in a genre where it is very easy to make everything muddy. You've got natural talent to balance all the elements.

In fact, do you use some kind of noise gate. Your mixes stand out because of their clarity, even when using guitar feedback or crowd noises.

Great pop tune. Maybe you'd dig the first Uh Huh Her album if you don't already know it smile

This oozes 80s and FM-84 and shopping malls. I'm here for all of it! Really tight mix, too!

> i also learned how to use a fucking compressor correctly

tell me your dark secrets, I suck at compressors

Amazing, sounds so good. Thank you for sharing your process, I'm going to try your method this week. Found myself getting in my own way week 3, so your process might be a good approach for me in week 4.

Damn, this is so good. Top to bottom. Whatever you think you're lacking in technical ability does NOT show up. The mix, the composition, delivery, all of it is great.

For a moment I thought I was a highschool student in the US. great track!

So longing and wistful! I got “Friday Night Lights” vibes from it.

wonderful stuff. So, so pretty and aching.

ha, my highschool mascot was 'bulldogs', too big_smile
Love the lush feelz in the vocals, counterpoised with all the other elements it holds such a grand emotional drive, nice work!

The production value in this is truly insane, both the song and the music video.

This is so good. Very emotionally evocative. You have a beautiful voice!

This is SO GOOD. The vocals are lovely and mixed perfectly into the soft wash of instrumentation. You absolutely nailed the 80s dream pop style. I mentioned in the stream it's got big WolfClub vibes, and I stand by that. This could be right off one of their albums and I'd never know otherwise. Excellent work.

just killing it over here! great melodies, and everything works together to serve the song \m/

Oof. Big The Midnight vibes("Sunset" maybe?), this is so good! I am in awe. If Highschool Slow Motion World Ending is a genre, this is a star track.

BTW most producers would be very jealousof producing a track this good in 5-10 hours. I know I am lol

Actually gonna add Los Angeles to The Midnight references cuz you are really channeling the same spirits and ghosts ans haunted retro memories.

It's only week 3 and it's already clear to me that I will have to dial down my praise qyucj. You see, if I just kept gushing over every piece for the next 49 weeks, the commentary will end up looking just flat. Or I might appear obsessed, and I don't want to make you uncomfortable 😅

I mean, your work does tick all the boxes for me so far. I'm a big Slowdive fan, I love Hope Sandoval's work with The Warm Inventions (and Mazzy Star before that). I dig the marriage of soft music and disturbing lyrics. And this week you turned into faux '80s synth pop territory, which musically I occupy a bit myself.

So yeah, there's good reason to become obsessed, but

more of a pop feel this week, interesting! Vocals are indeed a bit clearer but I wouldn't say it was bad before, just different... Love the lyrics again

thanks so much! i love the sm58 heart i have a somewhat poor space to record in (it gets a lot of road noise etc) so a dynamic mic makes way more sense than a condenser smile

thanks so much heart don't think i know uh huh her, but i'll take a listen (: i think it's one of those things where i don't quite know what i'm doing wrong, but when i hear some other peoples masters they just sound cleaner! especially with the bass. hopefully will get there one day! don't have a noise gate, but I'm pretty heavy on compressors so the levels for things are consistent!

sometimes you just wake up and yearn for the shopping mall! also the compressor thing was i just had absolutely no attack on them at all and a high ratio, which obviously will hard cut some plosive sounds and make things less clear. i think it sounds better this week!

really thought your week 3 track came out great heart it's a long year i think, so it's always good to try something new to keep things fresh (: good luck with week 4 !!

i don't really listen to a crazy amount of synthwave but it's for sure the midnight as a reference point! I saw them a few times in Dublin, they put on such a fun show. don't think i've heard anyone capture the 80s nostalgia like they did heart smth special for sure heart (just listened to los angeles again, holy shit did they cook with that track)

this is so kind thank you heart I absolutely love slowdive, one of the best bands we'll ever see (: soft music and hard lyrics is something i love deeply too, my favorite song writer is called nicole dollanganger. i think she marries the two in a way i don't think many people could. she has a song called alligator blood which is a big contributor to me trying to sing and making slowcore music (:

loved the way ur track evolved this week too btw; was a highlight for sure!

This is so fantastic. heart Absolutely nails the nostalgic vibe implied by the title. Beautiful work!

Umm...why is this so fucking good?
