a blossom

By MaisieMarra on January 11, 2026 4:19 pm

been back working full time this week, so this was significantly harder than last week to get done, but we got there in the end. I had a rough instrumental inspired by a track by Athelstane (i'll link below if anyone is interested). there are these really slow slides in it that i fell in love with and wanted to play around with a similar idea. I went with a very sludge rock slowcore sound and it ended up being something i think is pretty cool. it's a riverdale track again this week too about the cherry phosphate loving, red obsessed queen cheryl blossom; i've found it's helping me get some words down on the paper quickly. don't feel like much of a lyricist yet and i'm trying to work on that w/ weekly beats.

thank you so much for the kind words last week too, and all the cool and beautiful music I've heard you all making so far heart really love how nice this community is, we all just out here trying to write songs and enjoy the process (:

Athelstane track on soundcloud

lyrics:
red hair and bad blood
don't care; it feels good
you won't go there, but baby I would
so come find me, deep in the woods

we'll never grow old
we'll never grow old

cursed veins, every last drop
on and on 'til you tell me to stop
touch me, until i pop
no please, but cherry on top

we'll never grow old
we'll never grow old

x4
never grow old

I feel the struggle of non-vacation WB production for sure... I'm definitely looking forward to falling back into a routine.  Beautiful track this week. Those slide sounds just pull you right into the atmosphere.  This track sounds like a dreaming in slow motion.  That growly distorted bed that comes in around ~1:29 add so much tension and energy in just the most subtle way, and then that wash that moves around in the stereo field at like ~1:57... so easy to get lost in. Really great work.

This is gorgeous. Wistful and dreamy.

so beautiful woahhh. and that snare is so perfect

cant believe u managed to make this song while working full time hooolyyy, super pretty great job icon heart

It really blows my mind that you are able to put this together in only a week, especially if it was such a busy week! Sounds amazing.

commenting again cos this song is just too good like wowww

Ooof those slides with the snare are just such a laid back vibe. Had me swayin with the tempo. The heavy guitar and your vocals are beautiful together. The slides are haunting and such a nice sound.  Faved

*phew* this one really just sends me to another world. incredibly soft and comforting; no abrasiveness or urgency. i love it.

Haunting and moody and beautiful. There is a real Twin Peaks feel here, especially in the dreamy vocals... almost got me watching Riverdale lol. Beautiful track!

I forgot I was listening to WeeklyBeats for a second, this took me to another world!

fantastic sound and vibe! the lyrics are cool and poetic and vibey, but it's hard to understand them, but anyway the vocals are also a nice texture in the mix so it's fine! cute video too! well made track!

me:

I'll follow you this year for sure, this is quality!

Really like the choices of textures, the drum sounds, the dreamy vocals.

A+

JP.

I had zero interest in Riverdale before, but now I'm curious.

The song is like a slow dance at the Double R Diner. No notes, five stars.

It's so fun to see how your music and musical voice have transitioned into this slow and melancholic vocal blend slowcore and I'm all here for it.

Sounds like you really found your place!

Also, +10 bonus points for that snare sound.

i did start with an old instrumental demo rather than completely from scratch like last week! realistically took me about 10 hours !!

thank you heart Twin Peaks is one of the best shows ever created, i love it with every fiber of my being; i always want to make music that would fit somewhere in that world heart I think Twin Peaks walked so that Riverdale could sit the fuck down :')

thank you heart it gave me a lot of life to switch gears from chiptune and try something else. maisie marra started as a project about a semi-fictional twin peaks kind of version of where i grew up in the north east of england; marra is a local word that is roughly equivalent to "friend" or "mate" and the broad concept was songs about the cruel fates that always befall somebody you know.

Sometimes you just gotta shake things up, right? Fantastic that it gave you so much energy smile

Seems like a mysterious and fairy tale-like place, northeast England, but that's probably me just projecting, haha. Would love to see more of the UK outside of big ol' London.

This song is so good, I'm really loving your music, could literally listen on repeat! I love the back and forth between feeling weightless/floating and gritty/sludgy. Thank you for this dopamine hit, so so good.

beautiful work, have listened a few times now!

Holy cow glad to have stumbled over here. Welcome to WB this rocks. Please do 52

Your voice and singing sounds so delicate. The track is beautiful. I love the guitar work and the overall clarity of the mix.

And watching your videos, I thought your Vivitar Vivicam was an old 9 mm film camera. Excellent work both technically and artistically. Please keep it up !!!

Superb.  It's low-key mindblowing to consider that the creation of something as banal as Archie comics would eventually lead to music this beautiful and profund.

This is just so so great. Really inspiring what you've been able to do here in just a week, super impressive. Amazing job!

Beautiful!

Wow this is great, so dreamy.  Very cool video too, did you make or is it from a show or something?

odds of me doing all 52 are extremely low! but i'm going to try my best. I've got 3 done so far which is already more than i'd done in 6 months last year. huge win (:

ah I wish it was but it's just a cheap digital camera i grabbed for 10 euro from a thrift shop! i love film, but i love early digital stuff too (:

haha that's true! i think it's just something to jump start some inspiration each week, it's a weird little world they live in. honestly getting riverdale from archie comics is absolutely insane in itself. how did u turn one into the other good grief :')

thanks! visuals are made from clips of riverdale; i'm really love AMVs, so i wanted to do something similar with riverdale for each song (:

This is so good, I have to +1 the Twin Peaks vibes comment, also reminds me of a project I dearly miss, Sleep ∞ Over.

Such a mood. The feel was set immediately with those long bends…and when your vocals came in, my jaw dropped. Stunning. The subtle build on the chorus is great, the extra bit of sludge in the background is perfect. Fantastic, favorited.

so subversive and haunting with such style heart

Another great tune. The vibes are so heavy. Big mood. Your stuff is honestly pretty inspiring and makes me want to take a shot at making slowcore. Any tips would be amazing smile

I think your lyrics are great. And I believe you when you sing them. Great tune

when i'm working on stuff and i don't like how it sounds, i always start by taking things away. i think slowcore gets really hurt by being too busy so if something feels bad, try getting rid of a few things smile

I don't go too crazy with reverb on everything either! i feel like it's a genre that needs reverb, i want it to be super heavy on only a few things! most of the guitars have zero to little reverb on them, but it's super thick on the slide guitar for example, and one or two other parts! i think having space in slowcore is super important smile same with the vocals too, the reverb is not at all crazy, i try to keep the mix as clean as possible so u can go really heavy elsewhere!

I tend to cut a lot off the top end of my guitars etc too, especially the distorted ones! just want the mix to be very middle / bass heavy and leave a load of room at the top for the vocals to fill up.

probably lots of other tips that aren't coming to my brain right now, but i'd love to see more people trying slowcore tracks so feel free to dm me if there is anything specific heart

just generally wanted to say thank u to everyone on this one too, i really appreciate everyone listening (:

Always so dreamy and can't help but feel this would be in a David Lynch film somehow...
... fitting for Twin Peaks Archie wink

Writing lyrics is always so personal, and often is some kind of automatic soul writing... I usually "hear" a word or two while listening to the music and build around that, changing words and phrasing as I go... it's not unusual I end up feeling very emotional rereading it in the end.

I personally want to say I like your sound and your style and I hope you continue heart

thanks so much for the kind words! I think getting started is always hard! sometimes i write the lyrics before i've any idea what the song sounds like, but most of the time i try to sing giberish and get a feel for the flow of a song before trying to put any words to it. i think hearing a word or two is a similar way of working, it's all just a lovely process; sometimes you never quite know where you are going to end up heart

wanted to say i hadn't heard of them, but i listened to romantic streams this morning and they sound so good heart

So good!! Love the guitar vocals mix everything

I missed this a few weeks back but am catching up on all your stuff and it's so good! Your voice is amazing, as is the way you mix your tracks, and I love your guitar tones and the restrained melancholy riffs.

Hey friend!  I'm doing a catch up on WB tunes and wanted to make sure I was able to have a solid listen though a bunch of tunes now I'm in the studio.  (working my way though about 1200 photos I took for work last week - but sitting in front of good speakers so I'm in my happy place haha).

This is really lovely.  I love how the snare is so electronic, and the cymble rolls / everything else floating around sounds so organic.  Perfect vibe for the moment I'm in right now.  Great melodies on the vocals (recorded well too)... lovely chords, great bends on the guitar (is it tuned down / baratone?)  And I appreciate you've gone longform (5 mins).

Ugh, this is just so good. I'm in awe. The mood, the lyrics, the vocals. I had to replay it immediately. Perfect.
