She’s back.

This one's reimagining a WeeklyBeat from 2024:
flower fight

and a reboot of a self-imposed 2024 challenge. One of these years, I want to walk away from WB with a full turn-based RPG soundtrack concept under my belt. Or at least the bones of one.

And this time around, I'll be better organized and better prepared for burnout:
1) Step away when necessary. Return when ready.
2) Follow the heart, not the outline. Make tracks that aren't part of the project to refresh.
3) Tag and label accordingly. Track titles for the soundtrack project will look -{like this}-.
4) Get a checklist together. What kinds of tracks need to be there? Keep the scope reasonable.
5) Work out of order if you need to. You can always come up with a tracklist later.
6) These will not be perfect. Don't kick yourself. Do your best, learn, and do better.

So, let’s give it another go. Take two, here we come.

love your guidelines

i want to cover all of your music because the compositions and chord changes are just so MAGICAL and I want to learn them and absorb them into my bones

with what free time?  not sure.

WOOF 2:30 guitar 16th note solo is rad

oooh yais those drums KICK! \m/ love that high synth riding over the synths.  the bass sounds extra good at the 3:38 mark, so good how it changes up. flower girl is on a rampage!

fade out is really cool here - i love fade outs and don't think of them as cop out endings!

This track rocks! Man so much energy, agree with TM kick ass drums. Favorite

an unconventional boss fight, but i'll take it heart

Oh, this is BADASS. Love the grit and the energy. That wailing synth bend over the top…and somehow the energy keeps climbing! Perfect fade as well. Fantastic.

Your numbered list is great. I’ve been working on a long form project for…a long time now, and feel like I’ve been more stuck than not. Follow the heart, not an outline is stellar advice heart

Great drive on this one!

Oh man I went to see Marty Supreme at the weekend and have been listening to Oneohtrixpointnever's soundtrack from it a bunch since then. This is super reminiscent of the sounds and melodies from that. Great job, really enjoyed!

Awesome guidelines and goal… and it’s a dope track for a battle, feels like it would vertically loop well, great energy.  I could almost hear combat stabs and menu select sounds in my head… very well done.

This is rocking... smile

And yes very appropriate for a boss fight soundtrack.

Hell yeah. That section around 1:51 got me swinging my head and bopping. Fiery intensity throughout this track. And little moment like that low note at 2:49 to add a bit of spice is chefs kiss. Man, just an awesome tune throughout, I feel like commenting on every little change up but there's so many so I'm just going to favorite it.

Oh and guideline #2 is exactly the kind of thing I'm trying really hard at this year. In my first couple of years of WB I just followed my heart on my tunes but 2024 and beyond I started getting too in my head about stuff because I wanted to start putting together albums which is more "big picture" so I start micromanaging the songs to fit the bigger project. Trying to get back to just listening to what the heart wants because those are always the tunes I enjoy the most. But man, it is so hard to find the balance. I need to meditate on it more.

Really dig that you gave intro the time and space to build up a head of steam at its own pace; everything feels very natural as it develops.  Agree that guideline #2 is spot-on, but curious how #4 works in practice.  Love the sound design of the downward shriek sounds.  Split 50/50 on who should win.

ayyyyyy i am so excited that you are revisiting these tunes and ideas!!!
love reading the story snippets, always.
and i love a good list, think you've got a great framework to create and build from.
this sounds GREAT. that slow bending lead is giving me big MBV feels.

side note - did you know that in the future capybara drive little hover convertibles and this is the song they like to listen to while zooming around??!

I fight on the side of flowergirl! heart

Hell yea, the moon guy saga continues, or at least gets a remaster.

flower...girl? (ʘᴗʘ✿)

the boss NEVER STOOD A CHANCE!

the beat is going places! love the groove, the chord changes, the wailing lead, the little voices that whisper support to the main melody, the drops/dynamic sections. after the guitar solo things quiet down, it's like going around eliminating all the remaining doofuses that wrongly maintain loyalty to the defeated boss.

Also love the steel pan ostinato in the bg that I only really noticed when the drums quiet down... but I realized it added good vibe all the way even tho it's more bg element. very nice.

A hero going on an epic journey vibes...

Imagining saga frontier 2 style camera movement but way more dynamic, SUPER DYNAMIC (almost typed Daima [fun watch]) even

heart

Thanks so much! I've got a bunch of Orange Drink tracks I'd love to cover someday too. big_smile

That she is. 😅 Thanks Tone Matrix! One of my continuing goals from last year is to learn how to write and mix more aggressively, so I'm really grateful to hear parts of this worked out okay!

Hehe, thanks! Tbh, I envisioned this as the standard battle theme. 😅 We'll see how the boss and final boss themes match up!

Thanks Paisleyfrog! I actually owe SQF big time for reminding me about that one. It's definitely been one of the most helpful things to remember for WB. big_smile

Thanks NeonRebar! That means a ton coming from you. I look up to your tracks when it comes to drive and grit!

Thanks for the kind feedback! and for the listening recommendations. I'll have to check those out!

Thanks Napear! Means a ton to hear you could hear it in context. Battle themes are tougher for me to write so I really appreciate the feedback!

Thanks ViridianLoom! And yeah, #2 definitely feels tricky to balance sometimes. But between WB and your album work, you've proven you can totally do both! big_smile

I'll have a bit more to say about #4 this week, but my thought is to get a list together outlining the structure of a basic RPG soundtrack template and then to fill in the blanks throughout WB 2026 (not necessarily in order). It'll be more of a sub-goal this year rather than a yearlong challenge - that way I can break away from that project and write other things when I feel like it.

Anyways, thank you so much for listening, and for the feedback! I'm glad to hear the shrieks in particular worked out okay.

I do now, thanks to certified capybara fortuneteller jwh! big_smile  Haha, thanks so much, and glad to hear the idea for this project is resonating. I promise they won't all be throwbacks to previous tracks, but I'm having some fun taking that old material in new directions with fresh energy this year!

That it does! Thinking it'll be a sort of reboot of the project, but expect familiar faces and themes to crop up here and there if I can pull it off right. Thanks for listening! big_smile

Thanks! The steel pan's actually a lofi gamelon. I'm glad to hear the ostinato worked!

Love this - turn-based battles with an SF2-style rotating camera is pretty much exactly what I had in my head when I made this. big_smile (Also, I dig the shoutout to SF2 and any game with a Hamauzu score!) Thanks so much rayjkayj!

Thanks! big_smile

The energy here is so infectious! Really impressed with how you've balanced such a high energy level with keeping enough variety that it feels fresh the whole way through. This does feel poised to be a boss fight theme. For some reason this makes me think of the aesthetic of Sea of Stars even though I don't really remember the music from that game haha.

Thanks so much! I remember a lot of people talking about Sea of Stars - I still have to check it out, but I'm looking forward to digging into the soundtrack (which I guess Yasunori Mitsuda from Chrono Trigger made a guest appearance on?). Very glad to hear the energy levels worked out, these kinds of tracks don't come naturally to me but I do want to get better at them!
