it is Mom's birthday this week  big_smile

› lyrics

i wrote this song for my Mom's 70th in 2022. i went a little wild with the original version (ended up going a bit power-pop w/ drums & a bunch of guitars & harmonies & guitarmonies), and even though she loved that recording i thought it might be nice for her to have a more chill version to listen to that felt more like i was sitting in the room singing to her.
so yeah, here's a live version i recorded this week with just a single guitar and vocal. ok!

Heartfelt and lovely. Continue to love your stripped-back songs. Absolutely inspiring. Need to try a guitar/vocal song only one of these weeks smile

The tones you’ve been pulling out week on week are fantastic - you’ve really been making the most of these minimal compositions, and the variety is fantastic - what did you use this time?

Happy Birthday Rhonda! What a lovely song and a lovely mom heart heart heart

I really like these live takes you've been doing. It really shows off your skill as a musician to get this all in one take. Beautiful song and singing. Well done!

Happy birthday mom! Really nice sound in the recording and, of course, great composition and vocals.

Beautiful hommage to your mommy. Moms are the best.

Nice sensible performance. It sounds super good too.

what a touching tribute to your mom! I'm sure she'll enjoy having this version to add to her custom song collection from her son. Agree with PeterM, these stripped down songs really showcase your skills songwriting and performing.

I really like your choices with melodies. Great vocal performance too!

I feel this is coming straight from your heart. Lovely and touching. It must be a wonderful mother and woman.
Btw.: was Brian Wilson inspired by her too, when he wrote „help me Rhonda“? smile

Happy birthday to your mom! This is sooo beautiful, the guitar sound is incredible and the vocals are so delicate yet cut right through. I've said it before, but you're just nailing these solo vocal/guitar tracks. This song has that uncanny quality to me where it feels like it's always existed somehow.

Happy Birthday Rhonda!  Any mom would be thrilled to get a tribute as lovely as this.  You continue to kill it on these live stripped down tracks.  Just a great cozy intimate sound.

"Sto lat!" as we would say in Poland, which translates to "[we wish you to live] a hundred years!"

While this version is fantastic, I'm now pretty curious about the guitarmonies.

Love the tone of your voice and the tone of your guitar smile

yay to the mom's. Happy Birthday Rhonda what a lovely tribute!

Just lovely.  Great mix too... the vocals are super clean.  Which I'm sure is tricky than it might seem, with the guitar up that high on the neck it would be REALLY easy to mask the vocal, but it seems you really have this set up dialed in.  Well done.

so fine! I am absolutely sure she is impressed, Very honest, touching and human in the best possible sense...

Pop, sweet and sad vocals and melody. This is the best power pop song!

This sincerely is making me tear up. Thank you for sharing something so pretty. You family seems like a special one heart

Hey, super sweet song and lovely jangly guitars!

Oh my, brought a tear to my eye. Tugged at the hear strings. After that first verse I felt like I had sense of Rhonda, great lyric writing, and then I thought of my mom heart
A light in a dark place and hug for lonely heart are two wonderful things to say about a mom! I like that you made version that's like sitting and singing to her, I think all moms would like to be sung to my their sons. Oh gosh, feeling emotional again at that thought.

Simply beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.

Sto lat, i love that. thanks, rplktr!

when i recorded this one back in 2022 emily put together the slide-show video with a bunch of pics of Mom through the years.  smile

thanks so much! this one was the same set up i used for 'mangum, moody & fox' back in Week 40, although i did some different mix moves.
the guitar is my aluminum neck Clydesdale made by my buddy Chris (Century Guitars). plugged straight into my Music Man HD130 combo, with a bit of amp tremolo. i added an ADT plug on the vocal mic track, and there was enough guitar bleed coming through that mic that it gave the guitar that kinda chorus sound (bonus!).
i would love to hear you do a guitar/vocal only track!

thank you, Buddy! i was just telling emily this evening how much i learned from working on 'for you to hold' with you.
and yeah, in some ways these stripped down tracks are less complicated to mix... but they've had their own set of challenges. feeling way more confident about mixing and finalizing these days then i did at the beginning of the year. but also feeling like i have sooooo much to learn. just trying to enjoy the process and follow the inspiration    ╰(*°▽°*)╯

been really happy recording with this guitar for sure. thank you!

This is so sweet and made me think of my mom and have a lil cry. I moved out to Montreal with my wife away from my family for the first time. I miss them so much.
Beautiful song. Thank you.

Beautiful heartfelt song for your Mom, I'm sure she will also love this version.

Listened to the original first for context *pushes_nerd_glasses_back_up*  Loved the upfront energy the electric guitar brought to the original.  The new version has a lovely intimate sound to it like your previous cozy basement tunes.  Soothing vocals and guitar sound on this one that act as a bit of a lullaby to the original. So cool seeing the family photos too.  smile

Beautiful ❤️

Beautiful! Lovely playing and singing! I really love a stripped back song, and this is so well done. Feels like an “unplugged” version. I really like the guitar work, teases out melodies and has a great sense of variety.

Say happy birthday for me please!

That original version's got this sort of urgency in it, this almost over-the-top energy. Thank you for sharing, it's fantastic. Kind of early Death Can For Cutie vibes there, love that stuff.

You have such beautiful vocal melodies! Such a sweet concept too smile

Very sweet smile this version does feel like it matches well with the theme, but I haven't heard the original, that's provably cool in it's own way too.

Beautiful, and I love the original too.

Nice tribute to your mom. Very sweet.
