emily // bass, vocals
jwh // drums, vocals, whistles, mix

emily and i set up some gear on saturday to do some live recording & see what came to the surface. we then went to our respective corners to layer & mix without listening to what the other was doing.
*as of the time of my typing this, we haven't heard each other's mix yet... decided to wait till they load on WB to listen.
gonna try to do these collabs at least once a month this year  smile

>>> if you are here first, please make sure to head over to emily's page to check out her version:
emily // survivin'
i'm excited to hear what she ended up making!

this was a lot of fun & i hope you enjoy it. thank you for listening & take care, it's rough out there.

So different from Emily's and very cool idea. Love the bass and whispered vocals, the reverb.

Somehow ominous and comforting at the same time.  Like the scary world is out there, but there' still hope.  I'm going to go check out emily's version now.

Great idea and a great track.  Nice groove on the drums.  The snare feel is sitting nicely on the back of the beat.
Will have a listen to Emily's version now.

the vocals are SUPER scary

awesome work!

Mentioned this on Emily's track, but what a cool way to make a music.  Both tracks are soooo cool, and soooooooo different.  Both are incredibly evocative (which I guess isn't super surprising), particularly given the pair responsible for making them, but damn, so cool.

I love the whistles, and the drum fill intro was a nice touch, as was the reverse transition... very cool effect that fits the energy of the track super well.

oooh love the pitch change in the bass.  gave me some old school portishead vibes.  awesome creepy vocals that sit perfect with the smoky bassline.  oooh the ending made me want m0ar! love you guys!

This is such a fun concept to song making. So so cool.

heart heart heart

🥇🥇🥇damn man, you keep outdoing yourself every week

This track is haunting. It is unique but it's sooooo well produced and mixed. The placement of the drums in the back with the reverb, the delicate backing vocals, the low bass drone. It produces a strange hypnotic feel. That little break at 1:38 is super tasty, and the whistling is a beautiful idea. This is a bizarre wonderful little exotic bird of a track.

this is amazing !!! well done

oh I love a blind collab, no better artists to pull this off, great work.

This is great! I feel like this would make for an awesome run the jewels-esque hardcore rap track

YES.

I was thinking of going another direction for week five and I think you and Emily have confirmed it for me.

Trippy!

Love the collaboration. Will go listen to Emily track right after this and am very curious about what she did.

Daaaaamn! Chills! I really love both of these week-4 collaboration tracks!

Guess we're back at the downer party now.

that ENDING

You two are such an inspiring MusicalPowerCoupleâ„¢; each week you both both put out fantastically creative and evocative tracks, frequently as collaborators. cool  After that vocal cry started around ~2:11 and promptly got cut off a few seconds later by the end of the track, I quickly flipped over to emily's submission just to check if it picked up over there tongue

I'm so looking forward to more of these collabs from you and Emily this year. This is such a cool concept and the execution here is just awesome! big_smile

trip hop as we like it.

So cool! Love how menacing this feels! Looking forward to digging into more of your submissions!

Woah I love how DARK this is! Emily's vocals elevate the anxiety. The percussion with the room ambiance and the humming bass sell it. Super cool, and a great idea for collaboration!

love the bass and the whistling smile

very very ominous!

The sound design on this is fantastic, the instrumentation as well. All of which adds another layer to the lyrics. Masterfully done.

Love that collab idea smile You 2 are too rad.

That whistling… really remarkably hooks the whole thing into a subtle subdued climax.

Im here after Emily’s track and if survivin’ I was lost in, this one had the opposite effect, knew exactly where we were headed tho didn’t know what to expect when we would get there (whistling and more Emily being amazing is where, duh!)

I really like your vocal delivery here and the lyrics in particular. Bad ass song.

That telephone vocal processing is so eerie with the gloomy music and yes, the whistle. Excellent track! Haha, that ending hoarding 90% of the energy in the song. No notes, five stars.

As said above, you guys sure ARE cool! This marched along, had me marching along. The ending kind of surprised,  but very cool!

haunting and eerie but with a full sound despite the sparse arrangement

Wow, those drums just grab you, the blend of your vocals is superb, hope to hear some more like this in coming weeks.  Listening now for a third straight time, trip hop at its finest.

I absolutely LOVE the menacing 'ghosts-in-the-mix' feel of your track AND Emily's, and then to hear sudden yelling is the perfect accentuation to that haunted feel. Both of you created something so different from each other, but that juxtaposition of quiet haunt with sudden bursts of angst makes both tracks equally addictive in their respective vibes(reminds me of The Pixies, but scratches a deeper itch in me).
"with your hands on your head, or on the trigger of your gun" -> way to pull that trigger! heart

Super! Really love the lyrics, its like a positive framing of Sisyphus. Beautiful and also useful kind of mindset to adopt. Thank you. Also the composition and processing sounds amazing!

I love the dark vibe to this track. A wee bit creepy in the best kind of way. The shout at the end was chef's kiss. Btw, I feel like ya'll would have an awesome collab with Drumbender in this style wink

there's some real power here. It's fascinating to experience both these tracks and feel that shared background frequency but also how very different they are. Cool!

thank you for that, rdomain! i used to feel very out of my depth with drums (and i still don't really know what i'm doing), but i think part of it was i would unnecessarily complicate things in the past. eventually i learned that it was ok to keep things simple, something that many of the drummers i love are not afraid to do (Moe Tucker, Mimi Parker, Georgia Hubley, Chris Brokaw, etc). also, the Dilla Time book really made me think about the elasticity of time & rhythm differently. i'm learning to trust my heart more.

i really appreciate your comment here, Kedbreak! we tracked the bass and drums live together, and i had a cardioid mic fairly close to emily's bass amp and an omni a few feet away from my little drum setup. that omni was getting a lot of tasty room sound, but i had also used my phone as a back up stereo mic on the other side of the room and the phone mic ended up really adding a lot of dimension to the mix!
anyway, thank you   smile

ooh love a good collab. Great drum textures. Vocal delivery gives Gorillaz a bit.

would you ever consider sharing the exported tracks for this? I have some ideas, would like to remix or use for some future WB. if so just email [email protected]
