The Climb

This has been a crazy week.
My son turned one years old yesterday!
To be honest, it's been a crazy year.
Started off with my little man being dragged into this world, forgetting to take his first breath, and then spending 11 days in the NICU, terrifying his mom and me.
The pediatrician told us that every time he got excited, cried, etc., his heart rate would soar, and his blood oxygen levels would drop. Essentially he couldn't live without being hooked up to a bunch of machines. He was tangled in a mess of wires and machines, and we were tangled in the fear that our little boy might never live a normal life.
As time went on, the pediatrician encouraged us, but could never give us a solid answer about when we'd be able to take Isaac home. We spent 11 days driving to the hospital, with my wife (who should have been on bed rest) braving the pain of recovering from surgery, to see her little boy.
We were thrust into the deep end of parenting very quickly.
I'm very happy to say that our Isaac isn't just living a normal life, he's thriving. Growing up before our eyes, keeping us on our toes and filling our hearts with a love we never knew was possible.
This week, leading up to his first birthday party (Pokémon themed), I've been thinking a lot about the journey he's gone through in his short life.
It's a journey I didn't set out to write a song about, but on reflection, it feels like it's exactly what this piece is about.
Thanks for listening to and reading about my cheesy little love song to life.
Happy birthday, Isaac.
I love you and your mom more than anything!
