Herding Mythical Mountain Cattle

By jegasus on January 3, 2026 9:46 pm

### Lore
You raise the long floppy brim of your straw hat and try to assess where your animals are. These tree naps can feel pretty magical, but they do come at a cost. The cattle is scattered across all four floating mountains, hiding in the clouds. Or is it fog? Now that you think about it, there's not much of a difference in this place, is there?
Well, it's time to get to work! You break out the flute and start playing deep notes that resonate across all the valleys. Your third and fourth arms (and all eighteen fingers) reach for the koto that suddenly appeared on the ground next to the tree. As you continue playing, you enter a trance-like state and two people spring into existence in front of you: your copies, ready to help, one holding a banjo and the other a violin. You all play in unison and slowly but surely the separate animals move closer to each other. They gracefully coalesce into a single group, their movement somehow dictated by your magical tune. Life can't get any better than this.

### WB 2026, LET'S GOOOOOOO
Yoooo!!!! Look who's back for more!!! We at it again, Weekly Peeps!!!! I'm super stoked to be back for WB 2026! I originally wanted to kick things off like last year with a funny rap song, but I wasn't able to make that happen due to family holiday travels & whatnot. But worry not, I'll likely do at least one silly rap song throughout this year!

It's worth mentioning that, even though I'm super stoked to be joining in WB 2026, I am doing so by giving myself a lot more grace than I did in 2024. This means I am going to be much more willing to allow myself to simply not post during weeks when life gets in the way. I got the streak once, it felt awesome, and now I don't feel like I have anything else to prove to myself in that regard. So the point is to primarily have fun and, if I can't bring myself to have a little something ready on Sunday afternoon, that's just fine too.

Also, 2025 was a year of MAAAAAANYYYYY many 8 bar loops that never graduated into full songs, so I will definitely be going to that well for many of my submissions this year.

### Production details
I've been feeling in a bit of a creative rut recently. In 2025, I released new music on a consistent basis for the Unofficial M8 Community Jams, but more recently I've been feeling super formulaic about my sound and song structure, and have found it kind of hard to break through. Luckily, I've had the opportunity to take several days off work, and I think that has helped a bit. I've been trying to force a few different things in my M8 workflow, and I think it's starting to pay off. Just a few nights ago I was lying in bed before sleeping and was able to create something like four or five kernels of something fun.

Anyways, this particular song ended up coming about during a trip back home. I started at the airport and did most of the fun stuff up in the air. I think it took me about 3h to get the main pieces in the right place and sounding how I wanted them. I then spent a few more hours with super minor sequencing and arrangement tweaks and then recording the video using an updated version of m8gd. The whole track was made on the Dirtywave M8 and what you're hearing is a direct render from the machine that I just converted to mp3.

Many of the sounds here are from a sample pack called "MGF Audio Mega Pack", which you can find on gumroad with a quick search. I love how old videogame-y they sound, it's awesome!

I just want to reiterate how happy I am to be back!!!! Really looking forward to hearing some good old musical weirdness from y'all. The year off was very nice, but I'm ready to be back!

Ok, that's enough writing from me. See y'all soon!!!

PEACE!!!

行きましょう!!! Love the lore drop, also really dig the sound... great groovy track and a good opener for the year.  I can totally understand how a one can fall into a "everything I make sounds/feels the same", and WB is probably one of the best cures for it... like plenty of room to explore new ideas and make things that push your boundaries... but if the above is the product of you being in a rut... I mean, I'll take more of that too, those drum patterns... and that like tremmy lead around 1:00... (‘∀’●)♡. Happy you're back at it, can't wait to hear however much you post.

Holy catfish the mix sounds huge! One helluva start to the year. Love the mix of instruments and textures you have going on - video game-y and Asian-y and chaotic-y and fun (fun-y?). Also prime Lore drop. Looking forward to hearing where the creativity takes you this year!

The pan flute samples brought back rushes of musical memories. What a great start to the year.

Welcome back!  Some really nice textures in this.  I especially liked the flute sounds.  I think you're already breaking out of your creative rut.

this hits hard but and simultaneously makes me think of the MIDI soundtrack from Bungie's Marathon FPS from the 90's

Panpipe + tabla = epicness smile Love the pluck sample too! Great job!

Cool flutes and expertly deployed strings.
Welcome back.

Welcome back jegasus! I love your sound choices and the whole song has an alpine mythical feels too, so you nailed the lore! And you nailed the ending too.

OH?!?!? AND THERE'S LORE?! JEGASUS?!?! Holy smokes love the strings and beats on this, welcome back!!!

So glad to have you back this is hard, great entry to this years map. Happy we are questing again!

Fantastic. A mystical jam band trading solos on the mountains. Great sense of space with grandiose low pipes and drums laying the stage for the soloist. I particularly love the banjo with its superhuman trills, but all the instruments are really nicely arranged to support each other and not step on any toes. Classic adventure game melodicism

yeaaaaa good to see you back!  Loving the groove of the drums and that drilled guitar line with the strings.  The adventure continues!

the repeated notes, the panflute, the determined melody. great stuff!

Awww yiss, those rhythms are the mythical cows' meows!  Really digging how naturally your arrangements flow, especially amongst the supporting parts in the background, while up-front superstars like that panflute are tearing things up. heart

Great start to the year. YOU"RE BACK, WE'RE BACK. LFG!!

Sweet!

Can't think of a better way to start to the year than by herding mythical mountain cattle. Sounds like an absolutely idyllic profession ^^
But seriously: I love how you manage to make your tracks sound chiptune-like without using any standard chiptune sounds. Nice natural switching between lead instruments, sounds like a band all taking turns taking their solo spots.
Good to see you on here, alongside so many Community Jam friends heart

Love the lore, love the title, love the song!

This is great, man!

But seriously, I very much enjoyed the long, detailed description. Always cool to get an idea of the person behind the music.

EXCITED FOR THE RAP!

ok this isn't a rap but excited for when it comes

I LOVE THE LORE more of that please
great to see you back!  cheers!

Welcome back! And what a great entry into the year, totally a vg nostalgia sound I haven't heard in a while, those pan flutes are everything! Really fun smile

i love you, jeg

Haha, I had expectations about the audio bit, and I'll get to that, but what I totally forgot about was your wall-of-text descriptions big_smile

The song's mixed well, there's a lot happening with good pacing and a cohesive tone to all of it. Might be my favourite track of yours yet! And man, that shakuhachi is straight Amiga vibes. I didn't know I needed it, but what a blast from the past!

I can hear the mythical hearders herding the mythical cattle (my fave kind of cattle). They are enjoying the task so much they merrily bust out the pan flutes. So many arms they have. Impressive! Yes, it is a good day to heard mythical cattle! Welcome to 26! Good times.

yeehaw pardeners. lets get rustlin

Happy New Year Jegasus!

I have a feeling WB will pull you out of your creative rut!
Here's to a creative & productive 2026!

Such an enjoyable song, feels like a Rollercoaster. Agree that it's a good year to just, do it on your terms and have fun. That's my plan too!

ooh what a banging melody and percussion.
I missed listening to Jegasus tracks! whooo.
great progression, tight story!
gib me moar!

The question here really is: what exactly is mythical? The cattle, the mountain, or both? Hahahaha.. Thanks so much! I feel like I need to do more DJ-friendly continuous play-allowable endings, but sometimes you just can't beat a simple slowdown, haahahha...

Thank you so much!!! Can't play those strings and all those trills without 18 fingers, y'know? Hahahaha...

I find it super fun to paint the mental image of what, in my mind, the song brings up. I'm happy it is fun and resonates with some folks! Hahahaha... Great to see you back too!!!

Aw, thanks, my dude!!! The banjo retriggers were a fun addition at the end as I asked myself "how can I make this sound less human?", hahahaha...

RIIIIGHT?!?!?! That's what I'm TALKIN' about. Hahahahaa... And thanks so much for the kind words - I feel like WB 2024 is when I really found out that my main artistic voice was this weird style of chiptune-but-not-really.
Also, I absolutely love this image of all of the copies just politely cue-ing each other's section as the bow out, even though they're all the same person, hahahaha... Thanks so much for listening!!!

Yo this is good! but it needs to be louder!!! Use dat limiter haha big_smile
I really like the various leads

For real I thought "no way a track can live up to a title like that" but god damn if it didn't.  By the end I was envisioning a super weird martial arts fight, maybe something like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West...just a lot more colourful.  Really liked it

It's a moo-d!!!

i'm a weekly peep soaring across the wonderous tailwinds you've weaved into this beat 🐣💨

This is awesome! Listening to this and your later stuff, it's almost like if dungeonsynth wasn't constrained to medeival europe. Love it!!

Oooooh, worth waiting 6 or 7 weeks for to get back to my nice speakers. I've been up and down a few mountains.... I ---heard--- the synth flute
