Haunted Basketball

Well hello there, music making comrades!

First of all, thank you so much for your kind comments on last week's submission! You've all been incredibly kind even though the song had such harsh sounding instruments - especially that beginning.

Anyways, moving to this week! I'm super happy how this one came out!!! After submitting last week's tune, I started a bunch of different projects and got kinda far in them but none actually felt like they had enough "meat" on them. I was starting to get worried I wasn't going to have anything on hand for this one.

I think I started the sketch of this submission on Thursday or Friday night, and it started with just one of the little melodies. I felt it sounded a teeny bit medieval, so that's what I named the file, saved it and went to bed. Yesterday night (also in bed) I spent some more time with this and was able to flesh it out quite a bit, but it ended up losing its medieval edge and just became rather dancy. It still felt like it was missing something, so I added a fun kick drum and cranked its volume all the way up. The kick drum ended up a little distorted and sounded like a basket ball bouncing on the ground. I then added the tinkly degraded piano, which made the the second half sound spooky and haunted. Finally, I threw in a one more section which ended up being my absolute favorite - the part around 1:40. I thought "well, I've played the entire melody so far on key, why not play some off notes?" and it paid off SO DAMN NICELY... I am in love with that little section.

As usual, all made on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker, and it tells me I've worked on this for about 3h15m. Most of the sounds were created using WAVSYNTH, one of the internal synth engines, the only exceptions being the kick drum and the piano notes, both of which are sample-based.

I look forward to listening to what y'all have been up to!!! Wait... It feels weird to say that I look forward to listening to something. Irgh... I know that's how you're supposed to say it, but it feels strange every single time I do so.

Anyways, byyyeeeee!!!!

CHEERS!!!!

PS: It is impossible for me to write something musical that's also basketball related without thinking about this incredible SNL sketch. If you've never watched it, I strongly urge you to stop listening to my nonsense and watch that instead, hahahahaha... Absolutely hilarious.

Nice track! Great use of the wavsynth! Also, I think the tempo change was a great way to finish the track. Loved the mood at the end!

Oh that kick does indeed sound like a haunted basketball! Very cool. And the vocal "oh" lead sounds slick too. I really like the slow down for the ending with the dreamy delay. Nice work!

i'm imagining someone taking a 3-point shot and it's swooshes through a net attached to a tombstone as a backboard and the camera fallows the ball into the abyss below.

that snare takes me back to a mega man track, and there are some melodic/harmonic elements in the middle that really deliver

love these melodies and the spooky/haunted vibe.

...why I'll be, it really DOES sound like a basketball!

Love the drive and the intensity of this, and the fun off-rhythms you have in here. Slowdown at 1:50 is GREAT. But my favorite part is the end, where after all that pounding kick and energy, it all cuts away back to just the bells. The slowdown made them all that much better. Love that fadeaway with just the delay. Great track!

Woah, that section that starts a minute in is awesome! It's like dance-y and eerie and funky all at the same time. The tempo change is such an underutilized technique, lovely implementation--it works perfectly.

Love the "Bouncing basket ball" as a beat.

Fun composition again.

Dirtywave is a perfect way to describe it. Love the tempo change and the reverby sounds to see us out!

The title ends up fitting really well as the synths sound suitably eerie and spooky while it is quite easy to picture a basketball with that beat.  Now I'm wondering who would haunt a basketball and what happens if you attempt to play with it.

Very cool synth manipulation here. Nice work!

Oh man, someone better stop this crazy ball.

Hahaha this is some great percussion. I really like the echoing pings as well throughout - and the tempo drop at the end! I actually kinda want a whole follow-up track at that slower tempo lol, it'd make a good transition into another song. Awesome track!

so damn FUN

love that synth @ 1 minute that sounds like it's fully down the stairs weeeeeeeeeee

i LISTEN forward to hearing where you take us these last 5 weeks, jegasus!
