See What It Will Be

Back to a bit of a celtic vibe this week, and another song closer to finishing the album. smile

Yet another song that's never been recorded but was written 6+ years ago. What's particularly fun about this one is that it's mostly my wife's song - melody, lyrics and structure. She's not necessarily an instrumentalist any more, but she also mapped all the chords. She's proud of that smile The first scratch file she sent me for this was an a cappella - it was in key, and held perfect tempo for the entire song. I believe I called her Ringo after that big_smile

Initially, she sang the main part, and I came in later. The problem was that the melody got too low for me - and if we shifted the key to where I could sing it, she couldn't sing her part. So, we traded. Problem solved! (It’s still not exactly easy to sing. All the octave jumps!)

I wanted a full band sound on this one. Percussion-wise, there's a shaker, tambourine and bodhran. Instrumentally, there's 12 string guitar, fretless bass, mandolin and pennywhistle. I recorded the guitar first, and then overdubbed the rest of the parts. Click? We don't need no stinkin' click (but it's not like I had a choice about that - Smart Tempo freaks out with 6/8 time).

This plays to y'all's strengths so well. I absolutely love your incursions to celtic musical territory. Also, I have to say, I am such a huge fan of when you two sing like this. Super lovely. Now I want more! Hahahaha... Nice work!

you amaze me. NIN one week, celtic tunes the next. The sign of true talent being able to genre switch like that. Great tune and awesome harmonies

Wow! This is stunning! I know the highlight is your singing, but the instrument backing on this is really well done too. Really nice work!

You wanted a full band sound and you got one, could 100% imagine hearing this live in a pub somewhere.  Great track, and as always wonderful to hear you both singing together.  At some point I got to see a picture of your recording studio, it sounds like it must be brimming with instruments!!

Your versatility is amazing, I had to double check this was from the same person as IDGAF and Bees in the Bathroom, among others!

This hit the Celtic folk vibe just right, I guess it's because of my non-existent knowledge of the genre, but it reminds me a lot of The Pogues. Could see this in a cozy Irish Bar/n in the winter.
Nice to hear you with your wife too! Great work again!

Aww, thank you! I really love how she wrote the overlapping lines on this one. I think it was my suggestion that we do the last chorus one more time and harmonize. It's my favorite part heart

Talent, or ADHD big_smile

But seriously, thank you so much. I love switching up genres, and I'm glad it works smile

Thanks! I'm glad I finally got to bring the 12-string into a few songs...I love how it rings.

The singing fought me on this one - octave jumps, and the lower part of my range as well. I think I took three  runs at it before my wife convinced me it was actually ok smile

Mission accomplished then...thanks! And yeah, you're not wrong....my studio is FULL, between electronic and Wall o' Strings. I'll get you a picture after the holiday, when I get things cleaned up a bit smile

...My wife has gently suggested that I start using the one in/one out rule for instruments...

I'll take the Pogues, thanks! Also, "cozy irish bar/n" is great big_smile

I love the full sound of a BIG celtic band, like the Chieftains. The band I was in was seven people...I always called it the celtic chamber orchestra smile

I recognised you at the very first bar - STOKED you're back in Celtic territory. This one is beautiful and easily one of my faves. Tell your wife her chord progression, melody, and vocal performance (and yours too I suppose wink ) are perfect here! The harmony at the end gave me shivers. I am in awe.

Beautiful work you two, only missing the Irish accent in the vocals, but damn fine song.
