Slowly to the end

By horatiuromantic on January 18, 2026 10:23 pm

It's called "Slowly to the end" because it kinda goes with the melody. I like this major to 4th minor with major 7th transition. I added a couple of more chords because it sounded a bit boring with just two. I wanted to try Valhalla Supermassive reverb (which I got for free) and it was inspiring for the song, but in the end I swapped it for TAL Reverb 4, another free one that also can do massively long reverbs. I only recorded two piano takes, one electric wurli with distortion and heavy reverb, and the other a cleaner acoustic piano but with a bit of plate reverb. One of them is on video too. No effort was put into mix mastering but how bad could it be...

This week was a busy one with work and things, and some friends got flus so I didn't get to play music with them. So I didn't do any music until Sunday, but I did read a book called "We are Bob" which is a pretty cool sci-fi series. I worked on another song today that's much more funky but didn't finish, so I switched last minute to do a quick improvisation instead, so I will hopefully continue next week on the funky one. ENJOY!!!

What a beautiful tune! Very musical!

Get well soon friends. Swimming in piano. Cool to see what you are doing with free plugins they sound great. Good chords.

Your stuff is always great as is, hard to reciprocate your feedback because the best I can do is subjective. I might've enjoyed some percussion layered in the second half to give it some movement.

I love the ambient verbed out nature of the song mixed with these jazzy improvisations. Easy listening and cultured smile I see you

A supermassive Keith Jarrett comes to my mind. Beautiful.

Thank youuuu! It's funny how last minute it was and yet it captures a lot of feelings I didn't know I was capable of expressing with a quick n dirty piece. Now listening again in the morning. Cause all day I was working on a different funky thing and trying to figure out the melody and catchy this and that... I'm glad for the deadline that kinda forced this out of my system, without WB I would not have made this for sure!

Ahaha thank you! I have to give most credit to the Korg SV-2S for the piano and distortion sounds. But it's true, I have learned to use my ears enough that free plugins are also really powerful nowadays.

Thanks for the feedback, never hesitate! I am not so good with percussion for a quick n dirty tune, so I went without on purpose. Rhythm is super important tho and I agree with you, it could have done something, even some chimes or some fat clams or whatever u call those crazy shakers people have.... or a rain stick...?!?! At least this version has a pretty big contrast that the e piano does the rhythmic arpeggio compared to the more free rhythm of the first part.

Thanks! hehe it might be cheap tricks but they work!

Whoa thank you for the big words!

Very nice. Impressively coherent for a “quick improvisation”. Loving the slowness and the dynamic between the two pianos. Sounds very nice! This week i started with Tal reverb on everything but switched to supermassive. I think supermassive is very cool, but definitely not for every occasion. Anyways great use of reverb, letting the tail ring out at the end was so nice.

swept right in on those opening chords, so nice!  Such a soothing escape, well done!

absolutely beautiful. inspiring me to learn to play better. the fact that you tagged it speedtrash is just offensive!

That distorted wurli sounds so good. I love the melancholy in this. Cheers!

Very, very beautiful!

This! If this is your speed trash, then I'm just going to give up (not really wink).

Putting distortion on a slow keys song seems pretty daring to be but damn it sounds so beautiful and just works

This is beautiful. You are a truly great keys player. Love the melodies. Overall amazing!

Stunning! ♥️

^that's how i felt listening. i particularly enjoy that reverby overdriven wurli sound

Thanks! Long reverbs or long tail effects are just a little bit like playing with another musician, there is something to bounce against. Thanks for the coherent comment, I quickly grabbed on the melody to turn the impro into a bit of a song structure. Altho not overthinking, it was a lucky but calculated find.

Nice. Float right along.

Thank you. Yeah, not a fan of the term myself but it really was made a bit quick and came after working a lot on another idea that didn't finish, with some minor degree of frustration. Altho mostly some other deeper emotion emerged and took over, luckily.

Thanks. Yup, it's a nice find to put big reverb on distortion. And a minor 4th chord is never wrong

Don't give up smile except when pivoting to a better idea, sometimes you gotta know when to change directions. Sunken cost fallacy, kill your darlings, all that good stuff...

Haha that's awesome big_smile thanks a lot!

The reverb on the piano itself is quite tame... At least there is a little bit just to give it some space but when cranked to the max it is actually just a dry/wet knob, so max reverb doesnt sound so good. But with a plugin like supermassive or tal it can really go other places... Lots to explore!

Thanks again everyone, so nice to read about your reactions!

very nice

Soothing, calming. I could listen to it for hours smile

As for We Are Bob, the Sci-Fi series...
For a minute, I thought you checked "Prometheus and Bob".
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB0A5EB21C07F2747 its... not the same, but still makes me smile.

I feel transported to some lonely but hopeful journey through space. Both keys sounds great, but I love the wurli here. Very sentimental, but always pulls in enough dissonance and crunch to balance that out. Great command of tempo and dynamics. Loose and sweet and beautiful

just drifting away to this, very nice.

that soft piano is crazy good

This is a beautiful piece of music! Love it

That reminds me, I need to reinstall both of those reverbs on my computer! I dig em both, but I'd have to agree I like the tal one a little more.

thanks! I read somewhere or watched some video about the minor 4th and how it makes ppl cry the most.
and I like making people cry with music... so I am using minor 4th a lot heheh.

as for tempo and dynamics I really went with a first take with full on emotion, rhythmically tho it is pretty loose, as opposed to tight... not sure how that works for ballads, somehow it's fine even when u miss beats and change tempo a lot, as long as all instruments go together. well thank you for saying it anyway, rhythm is something i am working a lot on these days.

thank you!!! yeah a surprise even for me how a quick n dirty worked out so well, I just wanted to do fast groovy tracks all year but this hits the spot.

yeah DO it. I feel like there are probably more hidden gems in built-in effects from various DAWs that we are sometimes too snobbish to appreciate. like the reverb in FL studio is actually pretty amazing. i haven't used the ones in logic much but probably decent too.

Wow, this is one of my week 3 faves for sure. Really just wanna sit and soak up all those textures. Nice work.

So good, an amazing journey through space and planets heart

this is the music that plays in a lougne bar I'd like to sit in

okay i was cracking up on Big Rhythms, but now this has me super sad
