Kibbitzers

You are gonna like this one! It's me struggling to play the ELECTRIC GUITAR! Please let me know your impressions, I always enjoy reading your fun comments!

As you can see my chops are very barebones, but I make up for it with pure DUENDE in a one-take** performance of this new funky one-chord song! The chord is none other than E7+9 also known as the EHendrix or E major minor. I also do the one-take on the piano where I do the bassline, this time using the UAD Spark Electra 88. The drums are half by hand and half Levi from Logic, but most of the time he is relegated to play the high hat and the ghost notes of the snare, as I recorded on the midi keyboard the kick (1 every beat), and main snare which is kinda like the main guitar/bass groove. Plus hand-made a lot of the fills, to taste.

I composed the riff the past couple of days by jamming, and recorded only from ~4pm today until 12am, with 2 more hours doing the video. Very good result, considering what a struggle it was to get a decent guitar take!

**Actually there is a small part of the middle solo where I switch to a previous guitar take, because it was too good using the frikkin nail clipper as a slide. Well, you'll see.

I had a great time this week visiting my hometown, for my grandma's 80th birthday! I was also hoping to play a lot more electric guitar with my dad but I think he was a bit too busy lately and didn't practice, and he was a bit shy about it, so we ended up playing only twice. Also, he suddenly decided with my uncle to take a vacation to south-east Asia and they left earlier today, so that was a pretty wild turn of events! Family, eh?

I was not very inspired this week to make music but eventually I settled on this idea of the KIBITZER which is a person who likes to complain and give advice and tell you that what you're doing is wrong, even though they don't necessarily know any better or provide any constructive ideas. I think it's quite relatable and I think once again I'll put this song in the regular repertoire with the band once we get around to it ... It's super fun to play it!!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I had fun making it!

Hahahaha these lyrics are so real big_smile Sick work on that guitar too, man!

Brilliant!! The Arigatou at the end was such a good flip on the expectation, really got a good laugh out of me. Your guitar playing is great too smile

Damn. Tomorrow I'll be humming "I don't know" at various points in the workday. I'll be kibbitzing the kids while we shovel snow tomorrow too.

Love those lyrics and licks. This is such a fun song!

nice one! I was hoping for a guitar-based tune! love the vocals too! so fun

When I was listening to this at yesterday's weeklymeets stream I didn't read it as critique of kibbitzers, but rather as an ode to "fake it until you make it". And that worked just as well big_smile And as I said there, this sounds like it would play on the radio during the film-long car chase in the 1971 "Vanishing Point".

Seriously cool how you developed your own vocal style. Top grade shit. No notes, five stars.

Very cool looking guitar! (cool looking guy too.)

It is fun to hear you on an instrument you do not master. And super cool you just let it go and presents that to us even if not "perfect".

Vocal performance is super fun.

The two little guit solos works with that song.

Guitar is one of the best instruments, it is not THAT expensive, you can carry it around, plug it to create fun sounds... Pianos are easier to understand music theory, but damn, an acoustic piano won't move around!

Thanks for the track again!

nice!  was really fun to see you enjoy the moment just before you started singing.  that and the lyrics made me think of Tom Cardy.  and i enjoyed the little switch up a little bit after the half way point.

you can hear the fun you are having!

Killer riff and love the hook! You in no way sound like you’re struggling with that guitar, you have a fluidity with your playing like your piano - that effortless feeling. And one take? Awesome.

I welcome the addition of the guitar. It has nice chaotic funky vibe. It's like, raw, dangerous. We even got a solo! With the backup of the keys, it worked just perfectly for the track. I hope you enjoyed Romania and the birthday.

nice guitaring! what can't this Horațiu do??

Awesome hooks throughout on the guitar and those background vocals are so catchy.  Such a fun listen!

Really enjoyed this during Weeklymeets this week. A total vibe, and I also found both the lyrics and your delivery really awesome and fun.

keep at it! sounds like you're already pretty good at guitar! lots going on here, in a good way

better then i can do lol

Oh yesss! The did induce stank face, and smiles. Smiling Stank Face. Digging the guitar. Especially dig those vocals, those made me smile the most. And seeing it done live, in one-ish take, that's fun, and impressive. Also learned about EHendrix chord! Gotta remember that. And Duende too! Thanks for the fun!

Korny vocals with sweet guitar

happy birthday grandma!

this track put a smile on my grumpy face - arigato!

I agree, this is super fun to listen to. And congrats to your Grandma!! Hope you've had a lovely trip back home smile

(BTW, I can't hear how ti your guitar would be any weaker than other instrumens you play, it Sounds awesome to me. But I also focus more on the energy than technicalities

Guitar sounds cool to me.  And it's great that you just went for it.  Honestly, I don't even care that much about skill level (although you clearly have more skill than you're letting on).  I would often rather listen to an enthusiastic amateur than a bored virtuoso.  Super fun vocals and lyrics, too.

Thanks a lot big_smile I would rather listen to an enthusiastic virtuoso myself but those are hard to find haha.

but yea the enthusiasm is really important and everybody can feel that, and it's why I am able to get by with what I do even tho the virtuosity is also getting better over time.

Thank you and yes grandma was pleased! hahah well if you say so about the guitar level big_smile as long as the rhythm is strong, the wrong notes are mostly irrelevant, and I avoided doing the things that I can't.

Great!!! Thank you v much, and glad to spread the word about the technology of EHendrix and also Duende! And yeah the vocals worked out so well, and so unexpectedly. the two kibbitzer backing vocals really work together to create some kinda dissonant melody on their lines, individually they would be just kinda boring, but together they have a sound hahah.

ahahah don't sell yourself short, just keep the groove and you'll get there. also I've been doing it longer probably, and also it's not a competition. (i have played ac guitar since like 2009 on and off after all)

thank you!!! I redid some of the vocal takes during recording because they were too normal / not unhinged enough. glad it worked out! big_smile

oh yeaaaa thanks!! I like being dangerous! if I had a much bigger amp I would do those tricks with the feedback but on this one it was a bit too small to make it work hahah. and also for the neighbours.

but yea!!! soloing was tough. i need a lot more practice to do a convincing solo. BUT there is good news when u listen to f.x. B B King - you just need a few very good licks and a lot of humor and you can play on any song and still make it sound good AND original. that gives me hope and makes me wanna get an electric.

Thanks!!! I'm glad you think so. it's the groove. if you can keep the rhythm you can make any notes seem intentional. maybe struggling is not the best word because it was really fun to play and I had many ideas, but many of my ideas were not technically possible for me to do so it was a compromise between where my fingers wanna go and where I want them to go hahah.

Ahah thanks!!! that was actually the very last thing I did, add the talking kibitzer voices after the Arigatou, and it coincided with the guitar doing a cool thing. It's funny how the guitar was really built on a very barebones foundation and the rest was built on top, so the energy of the track and the sections just kinda fit together after the fact but it really sounds kinda intentional now! funny how that works.

Oh yea! Thank you very much! I don't take it too seriously as a strategic decision to let myself go places I wouldn't go if I was overthinking it. And with enough practice playing this way I actually get better! win-win

you're right about the guitar, it's so ergonomic and potent. I was always kinda jelly about that, always so many guitarists kickin around jam sessions. but VERY true, much easier to learn theory on a piano.

Thanks!!! that's great, I like when there's multiple layers of meanings. But I guess at some point I hammer it on too hard and it is really all about the kibitzing, but it's alright. it's maybe not the most poetic song hehhe (maybe a little bit). Oh and thanks for the 1971 reference, maybe the best year to sound like!

And thanks for the comment about the vocal style, I can't believe it myself!!!

Thanks Janky! big_smile yeahhh it's a daily struggle eh? Don't listen to the kibbitzers! Do YOU!

Doesn’t sound like struggling to me. Love the sparse gestural solo, if thats a way to describe it… also very nice with the mid side relationship between the response and the guy doing it, really works for my unbalanced hearing. Perfect voice actinG!
