Flower Boy

By horatiuromantic on January 11, 2026 10:15 pm

HI! It's me, FLOWER BOY, delivering a nice new funky tune! It's only instrumental, but I started with lyrics about a boy in the field picking flowers discovering he's allergic to pollen but is still attracted to the sweet colors and smells. It starts with a slow groove that speeds up for the main theme and solos. I also made a video and I had fun doing 3 COMPLETE LIVE TAKES without cuts!!! I'm very proud of that because usually I have to cut parts of solos or themes or whatever, but this time it went without a single wrong note haha (ok maybe a couple but only small ones).

Please watch and give my channel some love!

I wanted to make a calypso kinda tune, with a strong catchy melody that would be as addictive to play and sing as something like Fungi Mama or St. Thomas, or perhaps any song by Harry Belafonte. I was inspired by all these wonderful calypso tunes, as well as I've been listening to a lot of Funkadelic and Weather Report this week. So I suppose all those things and more have mashed together. Please let me know if you know any tunes that are similar, cause I wanna listen! I hope I didn't plagiarize the melody, it seems super catchy, suspiciously so!

Performing on my spanking new Korg SV-2S, on wurli piano, wah clavi and hydrasynth lead synth. Mixed and mastered with UAD Spark plugins. There is some reverb, some galaxy echo on the clavi and hydrasynth with flipped panning (so the echo is on the right for the instrument on the left and viceversa). I also added a synth ride bell for the theme, cause I wanted to punctuate that ding ding ding calypso ride cymbal. I think it works super well and you can almost not tell it's not a real cymbal. Apart from the bell, welcome once again Levi the drummer on the drums.

I also wanted the challenge of playing bass and piano at the same time, because this is what I do in my trio with a drummer and guitarist, because we haven't found a bass player that wants to join us to play this kinda fusion tunes. So I have learned a lot in terms of playing bass while playing piano this past year, but not all tunes are equal - so the challenge was to compose something that I can play and solo over, while keeping the bassline with the left hand. We will def play this with the band!!!

Alright, thanks everybody for tuning in and remember to STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS sometimes!

BAD. ASS.

Inject this into my soul.  The funkiest thing I've heard in a while.

Getting some great sounds and grooves out of that electric piano.  The video is fun to watch as well.  You can see the obvious fun and joy you are having.  Definitely getting that Funkadelic vibe.  Maybe it reminds me a little of something like Herbie Hancock also.  Really cool stuff.

Mmmm good gwunky for the fella with allergies that I am. I like them plants but they sure don’t like me.

Vibe out! This looks like you had so much fun

Oh heck yeah

Damn that wurlitzer patch sounds toasty!

Super performance again.

My constructive feedback would be to find a bassist! not that your bass line is weak, but I don't feel it is the strongest link of the track and that you could probably just be even more "free" on the keys.

Still awesome as it is!

Soloing is solid as always.

Yeaaa thank you! Herbie is a huge inspiration in general so I’m honoured to remind of him, so thank you!

Someone in life you gotta do things you don’t like. Such as flowers (?!)

Yea really I am still enjoying listening to this damn track haha! It is so fun to build it up and then go to the second part of the theme, feels so victorious!

Yes indeed! Thx for listening

THANKS HAHAHHA I lost it at the bass player comment, I’VE BEEN TRYING FOR YEARS big_smile the band will get a kick out of this comment for sure. Well until the bass player arrives I will continue to bass it out cause I like to be independent, but indeed I would feel much more free without being chained on the left hand. However I take the positive look: I can choose where the bass goes and thus control the song at will, which would be harder if bass was not super responsive (good bass player would be ok but a not so good one would actually limit me further). For example only piano and bass goes to the theme at the last part of the song, but u cant tell because it’s already strong enough. The other takes synth and clavi don’t do the theme at the end, in their takes it’s just a regular beat. Poor planning didn’t stop me from 2nd theme because I control the power of BASS

anyway thanks a lot for the comment! Really appreciated!

that wurli is sounding so fucking good. such a funky track, really enjoyed.

also heartwarming to see how much fun ur having playing the keys in the video heart

Dancer boy is clearly carrying the whole song

Impressive work
As for a point of feedback, only the theme goes any higher, but there's so much song that could too
- Ebrit

instantly hooked with the feel good chord progression.  head nods nonstop! love the solo midway thru and the amount of funk heart

Holy carps (to quote jws) yes. Funky and all the beat groove but its a rare magical thing when a song I am listening to just becomes the natural soundtrack to whatever I am doing and just start moving to the beat and you did this here in a spectacular fashion. Awesome.

Funky as all hell, great work

This was great!!! Love the funk! But I think my favorite part were the little shots of you dancing, hahahahaha... Super fun!

Good listening, like how the hook pulls it all together.

You got a good balance with all the instruments, props

Man you're a wiz on the keys
awesome stuff, funky as hell

Oh man that is some funky keys! Love your expressiveness while playing (stank face!) and the little interspersed dancing made me so happy. Clean lighthearted joy, thank you for sharing!

Nice and fun

Thanks! Dancer boy is young but eager!

What you mean by the song going higher? You mean as notes or in intensity? Thanks for the feedback in any case. I could feel there's a need for an even more intense ending than currently, maybe 2x more final theme would have been perfect, but even with that it wouldn't have solved the lack of DUENDE. I cannot do real duende when I'm alone, that only happens with audience and band... so instead of trying to improve the duende by 1% with a lot of extra takes, I focused on good enough, making the arrangement decent and the composition strong enough to play later on with a band, and move on.

Thanks! Intro chords are really juicy and I don't think I took those from anywhere, but the chords in the flower boy theme are very much classic calypso chords based on the bassline that I heard and played in various combinations over time. Like I said in songs such as Fungi Mama or St Thomas...

Thanks! little panning and little tweaking of the volume in the mix, little compression on the master... Also thinking about it already from the arrangement - piano takes care of bass and mid tones, the other instr are on the high end. drums are drums

Thankssss stank face is important! I try to remember to do it live, but most of the time the photographer catches me with the most boring resting face expressions you ever seen

Loved watching this, man! Infectious grooves and really fantastic playing.

In terms of constructive feedback (although like you said, a lot went very right here).

I think varying the dynamics would really enhance this. I loved the section at the end when you dropped down to just the one instrument, and played it really soft. More of that interspersed through the jam would be killer.

Also loved the dancing in the vid!
Great job!

digging into that GROOVE. new Korg sounds killer, and nice mix of the intertwining voices!
"i am aware many things are going very right here."
ha, gotta love that confidence  heart

nah, intensity would be stronger, not higher
if anything, it can do with a little less power just so the strong sections feel that much stronger as right now the theme just kinda happens

I think we can all just blame Levi for this honestly

incredible musicianship. really fun listen and looking forward to listening to more from you over the year smile

this is so fun and light and funky!

Don't know what a "calypso kinda tune" is, all that comes to mind is Jean-Michel Jarre's Calypso series from "En attendant Cousteau". But that's a different genre AFAICT.

No matter, the result's fantastically groovy and funky. The sound selection also stellar, they all compliment each other real well. That wah clavi almost sounds like a wah guitar at times.

Since you want feedback that goes beyond "good job", I only have a tiny suggestion. The jamming is fantastic, but ultimately it's hard for me to pick out what the theme of the tune was. One solution to this is to come up with a short theme, lead with that, and finish with that. With all the improvisation in the middle. Y' know, the standard jazz band jam form.

p.s. this is my favorite harry belafonte album i have a very old copy on vinyl - i put it on when i'm in a bad mood or need some motivation

I have no feedback but I wanted to thank you for making me feel oh so good

I suppose that is feedback, what a great feeling!

Funky and whimsical. What a trip! I love especially the wah wah like piano, like a singing frog. And who does not like a singing frog?

Thanks!!! Ribbit! It's true, my mom usually calls my filtery wah synths cats but this one is more frog zone! I think the synth in left ear is actually more cat!

Thanks a lot! Oh yea good point about clarifying the theme! I do play it twice in the tune, and I have a long intro that builds up to the first one / obfuscates it a bit, so for sure it made it less clear than in jazz tunes. Then at the end it appears only on the piano, not synth and clavi... I didn't bother too much making it super clear that theres a theme and then solos - I like when it's not too formulaic... I still think it's better than I used to do, when I didn't really repeat the theme... or even have one... Anyway thanks for the comment and reinforcing the idea - I def intend to proceed more in this direction to make stronger themes.

Maritalstreep wrote:

Haha thanks! big_smile There's something a bit heavy to me in the bassline that's outside the main theme, which I really like how it contrasts with the positive feel of the rest of the tune hehe. Like a cute flowery boy trying to be badass but only ending up being more cute!

Oh yea! I see what you mean. I still think it's missing some duende.

Thanks! haha well why not! Life is too short to be too self critical! I am learning.

Actually as always, I had ideas after the fact- I could have done a lot more with the mixing to move stuff around during the track, panning the synth and clavi a bit more to create more movement. idk why i mention it now, it's the intertwining voices that reminded me of funkadelic - free your mind and your ass will follow - that tune has a LOT of crazy movement and panning on everything and it works so well! I wanna do more of that.

Hey very good point! I didn't feel confident enough in the groove without drums to actually cut the drums at some point in the track, tho it did cross my mind. I would def do it if I had a band, more dynamics always good! this way it's a lot of fakery to make Levi do different stuff so I kept it to a minimum. But anyway good thing to keep in mind!

Setting the bar really high! Really lovely listening to the three voices having a conversation. Sounds really seemless and tight! Great work!

Man, you make some of the best tunes that I've heard on weekly beats. Respect!
