Nightfiend

I sketched a 4 bar loop on my Elektron Analog Four MKii a year or two ago.
I sold the A4 last year and this loop has been sitting on my PC since then, gathering dust.
This week I sampled the loop into my M8, sliced it up and arranged it into a song.
Feels so good to get this out!

Loving the vibe. Very cyberpunk-esque.

Thank you! Appreciate the kind words!

Quite evocative. Some very tight m8 work. Reminds me I need to sell my A4. It's never really found a good place in my workflow.

Thank you!

Yeah, I loved my A4, the problem is I just made loads of loops and never finished anything.
I find the M8 much more suitable for finishing songs than any Elektron box.

I know you have song mode on Elektron gear, but it feels so clunky compared to the M8.

That being said. I do sometimes miss the more hands on approach to sound design. (And live unquantized sequencing)
Would have been cool to experiment with starting loops on the A4, and then finishing them in the M8. Thankfully I recorded all my A4 stuff into one huge DAW project, so I have lots of loops to mess with!

Good luck selling the A4!

Very intense, and dark, like what I'd imagine coffee is.

Lol. I'm also not a coffee guy.
Thanks for your feedback!

This gives me Shinobi 3 boss vibes! Good stuff!

Great sounds all around and a lovely driving, glitchy beat. I love the stereo play.

Wow, this is intense! A lot of energy, great pace and arc of suspense throughout the track, and I feel the sound design fits the neon theme of the website quite well wink

Great beat, wonderful sound modulation/pitch shifting/filtering. Very animated! Nicely done.

Thank you! Just checked out that game. I've never played it, but it looks great!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the pacing'/ark of suspense. It's one of the things I find most difficult with electronic music. So easy to get stuck in loops... Glad you like it, man!

Thank you! It was a lot of fun to make, glad you enjoyed those aspects of it!

That bass shift at ~0:42 is so good. I feel like this would fit a 2D roguelite game super well.

I find trackers in general and especially LSDJ styled ones, really make songs happen rather than loops. I think it's how they are designed and how you are encouraged to interact with them. They emphasize the song screen more equally compared to groove box workflows where the patterns often are the most emphasized ui elements. It comes at the cost of live interactivity unfortunately tongue

I found syncing m8 with external gear can help that element a lot, also there is midi controllers. I haven't tinkered with the later as much but, I know a lot of people that get a lot out of it.

This has very distinctive tracker-esque percussion which I like a lot. You’re great at adding switch-ups before changing between sections. I really like the half time in the last section. It all flows together really well! I’ll keep an eye out for more of your beats!

Thank you! That second bass is a Hypersynth patch. Never though of using Hypersynth for a bass, but it turned out really cool!

Yeah, I agree! Groove boxes are fun, but they definitely lean into patterns, while trackers are more song focused.
To be fair, M8 is the only tracker I've used. Sequencing songs is so intuitive on it.

Thanks for the tips. When I have more expendable income I'll get some more synths to play with.

I do have a Launchpad though. Need to actually use it. 🤣

Thank you! That half time section was a bit of a Hail Mary. I thought, "fuck it, let's make a metalcore breakdown with my chopped up synth bassline" and it worked!
Glad you enjoyed it!

+1 for getting old projects out of the boneyard, dusting them off and slapping a new coat of paint on them!
Hahahahaha... Nice work here, this is super fun! The transition at around 1:35 is also really nicely done.
Great job overall!!!

Haha yeah! I have many in the boneyard... Need to make a habit out of reviving them!
Thanks for the kind words!

This is sweet! Love the dark sub transitions that drop the mood then you raise it right back up! Gives me some 8-bit Castlevania mixed with Strider side scroller vibes.

Thanks! Loving all these comments about games! Lol, the transitions were a bit of a happy accident. I made the first bassline on a piece of gear I no longer have, and didn't feel trying to recreate the sound. So I just made a new bass, and built those transitional sections around it!
Thanks again!

Just hearing this now after relistening to your week 2 contribution. This one is also really great! Love the sound design on this too. The drums are really good too. I also really like the arrangement.

Thank you so much!😁
Glad you enjoyed it so much!
