Warming Cider

By FrogCity on December 31, 2025 5:13 am

Great first week. After gearing up hard in December 2024 only discover there was no weeklybeats come week one of January 2025, I've been waiting in vengeance with a thirst for the beat. I did use the time to work on and put out two albums I was pretty stoked on, a lot of which happened during RPM in February which had a similar vibe to weeklybeats and was enjoyable. Weeklybeats is better in the weekly cadence and relationships that naturally develop, seeing myself and others grow every week with every submission and in it together is really cool.

2026 I am committed to beating and extracting weekly for 26 weeks. Starting it off right with a weekly beet extract to the rim and weekly beat upload also filled to the 16MB rim. Another first, submitted on a Tuesday instead of minutes before the deadline!

Vision when making this one:
1. x:xx Inevitable brotherly death with visceral brutal melodies, dropped into immediate battle and chaos
2. x:xx Starting to get the hang of things, more organized, more teamwork, let's go y'all, ONWARD!
3. x:xx Onto the boats in rough waters, braving the wind storm, in some ways worse than the battle. All of a sudden the sun comes out, arms are locked, and we are skipping around the boat that we're still alive. Then things get a little mischievous when someone discovers the ale barrels were unharmed in the storm! But uh oh, it was the eye of the storm so here we go again. It's weary but manageable if we did it once we can do it again.
4. x:xx Flash back to a scene in a hut in the mud with a cauldron boiling bright, bubble up bubble up, round and round I stir into the night, dusting off my old tome with coffee stains filling the pages. Stir stir round and round, drop wishes in, stir and stir, the memory begins to blur, the giant wolf outside watches from the firs.
5. x:xx A jolly return to land, fresh food, and easy waters, the end of this journey, so much has happened in just one week.

I enjoy the hut in the mud very much.

Hehe my brain was not expecting the starting genre from "warming cider"!

The odd year WB reprieve is the only thing that keeps me sane.

Excellent extraction! Section 2 was my jam! And 4 a close 2nd.

I've been back into Vampire Survivors lately and this immediately made me want to pick up the controller again because this fits so well with that music. Section 4 was pretty dope and had a nice slow-tempo folk-metal vibe throughout with tasteful melodies. I actually really like the overall approach this week, because I've done this before where I have multiple ideas and I end up throwing too many out, only to be totally forgotten. With this approach, it becomes more of a weekly diary.

By the way "I've been waiting in vengeance with a thirst for the beat" just as a thing to say, goes hard.
"I am committed to beating and extracting weekly for 26 weeks" too, lmao.

This is super fun! Wasn't sure what to expect, but the heavy power metal right out of the gate was a really fun surprise! Also really appreciate all the different movements and how they tell a story. I really like how section 3 has a dark churn and then goes into that really nice groove of section 4. The melodies are nice and haunting too. Fantastic work!

When I pressed "Play" I didn't expect a punch in the face right away, but I needed that big_smile Sure woke me up, haha. A speed metal intro definitely works in this medley, and almost makes the rest feel "slow" even though none of it is!

I can tell you were eager to start the streak. 6:25, man? Five movements? There are punk bands that would make entire albums out of this!

Musically, this would fit like a glove with a retro-style car racing game like "Lotus" on the Amiga. It flows so well, you're clearly having fun with it. I particularly liked the final chord changes in the fourth movement, bold exploration that paid off: sounds fresh, but not forced. The old joke goes "when jazz is free, everybody pays", but this wasn't that. Good stuff!

(My only nit, if I may, is that the transition at 3:36 could be smoother. Suggestion: with tempo/key changes sometimes it's easier to make a clean break work, like you did before the final movement. That one's 💯, no notes.)

Thanks! I am roughly the same, hope to combine explored elements of each in the future

Yeeeessss folk metal!!! I am fairly set on doing more folk than I did in the past and less exploration into electronic stuff. Something about folk metal does the itch just right.

Definitely on the diary approach, I am experimenting with trying to get as many rough ideas as possible down in this first week to refine or evolve certain starting points in a later week.

Especially with vocals I have been patiently studying and waiting while filled with vengeance! Can’t wait to get in there!!

Thanks! I put a lot of iterations into the melody/harmony. Not so much this week on slapping powermetal-doublekick.wav on for the drums but was fun to kick things off 🥸🤣

Loool when jazz is free everyone pays. I’m stealing that one!

Good point on the transition, I just relistened. Yeah definitely not a great sound to do a crossfade into a slow section of a different tempo. Ironic how it would have been faster and better to simply have a clean cutoff. Thanks for the catch!

Lmao yeah I also got punched in the face I think the song I was listening to prior was mixed much quieter

I need to get hip to your influences to leave good feedback. I hear Dragonforce. I feel like if you get off-grid pocket-wise and add some bass this would be as good as the best out there in this style but I'm not a connoisseur. Your arranging of chords and melodies is fuckin exceptional. Just sounds like it's quantized and coming through GarageBand.

Each section is great they all have their own little highlights.

Chords in the finale build to the piano are crazy!

Such an excellent ride 🔥

hell yais!  I'll echo ViridianLoom's itch to play Vampire Survivors again.  The energetic pace of the guitars throughout is awesome.  The heroes are kicking ace and taking names!  The hut in the mud gives me spooky lore montage feels.  An epic trip from start to finish.  Piano outro slaps!  I envisioned the cover to the keys smacking down at the end.

I definitely enjoyed me a good dragonforce, especially in guitar hero. But I wouldn’t say they influence my style directly, moreso they listen to the same stuff I listen to: vgm and metal. I actually hate the clicky kicks going like crazy when it’s the entire song, which dragonforce often does. I much much prefer drumming like a7x, probably my favorite metal band of all time if focusing on the certain aspects (which there are a lot of) like the drumming. The first movement is pretty much the drums of dragonforce. The second movement starting at 0:44 is basically the start of through the fire and flames in both harmony and 90% the melody and yes I noticed this but said fuck it, I can name 4 songs that have basically 90% that melody and chord progression so who cares, as well as if you take away the melody it’s the chord progression of probably 30% of rock / power metal songs. I would say my top influences are artists that I can’t actually play or compose like for the most part so there’s a definite skill gap that strongly influences my writing. (Not that I tracked the parts here, just midi, but I try to compose and play in the realm of what I could play, but actually playing will be a later week). That being said my top influences are probably Steel Panther, Tenacious D, CoB, Yngwie, and my spotify yearly review reminds me of how much pop and singer songwriter I consume and love tongue, moreso on the vocal expression skill side of things like Adele is an all time favorite. Taylor Davis I’ve listened to everything she’s put out both because the violin expression is insane as well as I’m a Zelda VGM nut. I can play nearly all the N64 OoT Zelda tracks on the piano which influenced a lot of the way I think about music, maybe weakly connected here in the Dorian sections of the movements as Zelda OoT had a lot of Dorian surprises loaded into the music. Not that my fingers knew it was called Dorian at the time but habits all the same.

Appreciate the kind words on melody and harmony, where I’m putting nearly all my time refining and creating, really trying to make a hierarchy of structure and art in it. I made a post in the forums there if you are interested in how my skill in that improved so much in the last 2 years, mostly can thank chord crush for the fantastic learning resource and then application practice provided by wb of course.

Oh speaking of chord progressions, it’s the chord progression of the verse and one of the solos of sultans of swing which is my all time favorite guitar song to play lead guitar on live. But feel goes way beyond chord progression, just one of many elements to evoke and settle expectations with

Came across this while playing random WB tunes and I have to say, I love it!!! Spooky melodies on the main voice, super duper nice! Electric guitar chords in the background set a great tone, too. Super nice!!! WB 2026 starting off strong, let's goooo!

I love the grungy 80s flavor on the guitar. Reminds me of Golden Axe for some reason.

This is quite the odyssey.
Naturally, enjoyed the chip opera.

Also that outro seems familiar.

o.o Where did that change up come from really enjoyed all these little segments
