So that's the end!! 52/52!!!

What the hell shall I do with myself now?

fun fact : Most of my tracks are based on The End of the Affair by Graham Greene.  Had been meaning to write a concept double album for about 5 years.. Now i'm a lot closer to completing that goal.

Now..looking forward to a week away from writing before i get back into the swing of things!

Thanks all, it's been too much fun!  How you'd you all fare?  Tough slog, breezed through?  I didn't find it so tough as i was basing my work on something which gave me lots of subject material.

paul.

any particular direction?  yeah getting stuff started and complete!  At first it was rather daunting writing the music through the week then taking 1-2hrs on a sunday afternoon to write and record lyrics.. Lyrics used to be extremely exhausting.  Whilst I've had many misses through the weeks lyrically there's plenty of stuff i can re-work at a later stage to some satisfaction.  But the foundations are now there.  I've also started to add more things underneath main guitars etc that you don't really hear but if you drop them out its rather noticeable, a bit of synth works here and there to underscore parts.

and yes it has also set a particular sound/tone for a number of tracks that will likely go on to be included into an album, albeit everything shall be re-recorded with blazing amps, pounding drums, etc come that time.

didn't have much chance to really listen and comment on many tracks by others as it's been an extremely busy year so getting the time to get this stuff done really has shown me how to organise and get things done when the time presents.  Although when i did get to listen to tracks i was quite amazed and jealous of the synth abilities of many here, definitely not my forte and its something i want to be able to incorporate a lot more into my stuff.

next year?  i'm thinking i will do something along these lines again, if WB is here, then this is where i'll be.  Although next year I don't intent on writing 'typical' songs with lyrics as i did this year.  I would like to concentrate more on synth, soundscapes, experimentation, and the odd typical song here and there.  I'd like to be able to mould those sorts of things into songs at some stage.

most defiantly need to start up my own page/blog to start getting stuff out there.

what a great year to write music!! smile

WB has been awesome.  Have never been so productive, glad I joined in on the ride.

Will be sad to have it finish however looking forward to taking a few weeks away from music.

But the number one lesson has been how to start and finish a track.  Too many times in the past they'd stay unresolved pieces.

And next year will get out and finally play a few of these songs live.

what shall i ever do next year post wb??!!!??

I started doing a thing called "12 EPs in 12 Months", but only did two or maybe three as I just couldn't do it.

Maybe work all the material into an album? Keep going anyway, keeping a blog up or something?

vin, plenty of the tracks i've worked on for WB this year are for a concept album.. so these are pretty much the demos and then i'll record with full amps blazing and live drums!  No slowing down here!

currently clocking in at 2hrs and 2 minutes.

I do have a couple of weeks where a song morphs in a second song as well.

Mon - wed is generally put down chord progression and drum tracks and work and refine.  Once drums are locked in then record other instruments.
Sunday I put aside 1 or 2 hours and record vocal melodies then go back and add lyrics.

I'm sure many people have a ton of reasons for signing up to weekly beats.  its a hell of a lot of music in a short span of time when all considered.

so anyway its past the 1/2 way mark and i haven't had this much fun in a long time when it comes to writing music.  in fact i think it's helped in many ways.

so here's some of what I've currently got out of the process

- stop procrastinating.  sit down and finish the song.
- writing lyrics.. urgghh was how i used to feel.  now i can sit down and write and record the lyrics in an hour and be quite happy with them
- production line - i can sit down and put together a lot of different parts and get them down in a relatively short time span.
- who knew i could kinda do guitar solos!  I'm chuffed with this one.  i can add lots of guitars and they all seem to work together
-  quickly analyse parts that really need to be removed.modifed/etc.  this one is within reason as you've got make decisions on the fly
- work on production and mixing.  i used to really struggle to get vocals to glue in the mix and I'm getting a lot better at it
- actually not argue and fight with the microphone when singing.. generally happy for a vocal track/melody written and recorded in an hr or so.

best bit is i've had an idea to put together a concept album for a number of years based on a book.  been procrastinating on it and this has got me off my arse and many of the weekly beats tracks from about 1/2 way through a what i'd consider demos for this album to be recorded properly next year.

things i really want to work on is doing more synth/electronic stuff to mesh into the music.  its my weak point.

so.. what about everyone else??

oh.. and much respect for vin for getting me onto this site!! I'm a music writing machine mother fucker churning them out a week at a time!

That cortina website has some good rules.

Really dig rule 8.  I've found the best things I do I find I'm unsure yet push on.  If I analyse whilst creating I'm more likely to throw something out and you can only really sit back and analyse once finished.  Once I lay down the foundation I go with it.  Whether good or bad.  Sometimes the end results are surprising.

I'm cruising!!! Never written so Many songs.

This weeks was killer as it was a really long track at almost 8 minutes (had a challenge to get a long track done without putting myself to sleep).  Making mix changes etc meant listening to entire track and that was a hell of a process!

But I made it!
