I have immense sympathy with you, I live on the second floor of an old (for where I am) apartment building and none of the plug sockets except the one in the kitchen are grounded. My set up buzzes constantly and my wife vetoed my plan of driving a 12 foot copper spike into the ground and pouring 50 gallons of salt water over it and running an earthwire to my gear.

Have yhough thought about getting one of these

They are awesome little recorders and probably available used for well under 100 bucks.

Welcome and good luck! I like the song graphics a lot.

Im not sure what you mean by swell? could you link a sound similar to what you are looking for?

Also try and find an editor called sound diver (not driver) which is really old bur supports the CZ synths really well and has a visual envelope editor.

So far this has been a super fun project for me (and hopefully that will continue). It seems it's just the right amount of pressure to spark creativity without being burdensome.

I think that was kind of the aim, a track a week is a nice balance of quality and quantity. My week 4 track was just all over the show but it has a bunch of nice ideas in there. Something might be salvageable!

I wouldnt worry toooooo much about missing a week here or there. I probably will. Im viewing at as 52 individual challenges rather than one challenge which I fail if I miss a week!

i dont think that networking with other musicians has any negative impact on the creativity of the site whatsoever.

Sorry, I got completely the wrong end of the stick with what you were saying, I thought you meant the admins should build more social networking and promotion into the site. Artists collaborating to promote themselves and their work is a totally good idea. I like the idea of the underrated tracks thread or perhaps someone could curate a monthly "best of WB : January" etc, release and put it on bandcamp or something.

this is true but it is also obvious. once we have accepted that, the question then becomes, could the site be better at networking and exposure?  i think the answer is yes.  do we want to brainstorm and possibly do anything to improve it?  again, i think yes.

A couple of random thoughts. My personal take on the project is a challenge but a personal one. Setting a short term personal goal for the week and trying to reach it, this seems to be working well for me. I would be loathe to add a likes button or a play count button and turn the thing into a popularity contest. To be honest, even removing the number of comments and just leaving a "comment" button would work for me. Im not super fussed about how many comments I get although it does make me happy when people saying that one of my tracks is "funky" or "groovy" cause that is what I set out to write, yay me!

I'm also not super active at listening to other peoples tracks unless they are friends of mine. The disclaimer here would be there were only about 4 or 5 people interested in WB when I signed up and I wasn't expecting it to be so awesomely popular!

A quick idea though, how about we start a thread where people can post tracks with under X comments (5? 10?) at the time of posting, that they feel should get a bit more attention. Each person can only suggest one track per week and call the thread "hidden gems of WB" or something?

For example Every Second by Unison is easily in my top 5 tracks on the site so far and it only has a handful of comments.

I don't play an instrument or read music and I have a very (VERY) rudimentary knowledge of music theory. I'm slowly working my way through http://www.musictheory.net/ but it is really kind of dense and I have a couple of questions which I hoped you lovely talented folk could help out with.

1 - How can I tell what key I'm in?

I usually write music by looking up a key, for example C blues which I use a lot, then I know what notes Im restricted to. But if I look at another persons music, usually a .mod or and .xm, I have no idea how to work out which key the song is in by looking at the notes.

2 - Which chords go with which scales?

I have found lots of great info about making chords but the relationships between chords and scales baffles me, if im in C blues, which chords can I use for example?

Thanks a lot and if anyone else has any music theory questions fire away lets try and share some knowledge!

If you click on the filters drop down next to the music search box there are quite a few options you might find helpful. You can choose "music you haven't listened to" or "music you have commented on" etc

Hope that helps!

what are our feelings about parody?

Parody falls under the same rules as everything else. If it is CC friendly please go ahead. If it isnt CC friendly or contains samples of a work which isn't CC friendly we won't accept it.

No, If your songs contain samples which aren't cc compatible they are not eligible for weekly beats. If they contain cc compatible samples (there are hundreds of thousands in the links above) they are eligible for weekly beats.

We aren't going through every submission with a fine tooth comb checking every snare and snatch of vocals but if you are sampling something which is obviously recognizable (from a movie / youtube / play / interview / song / radio show etc,) and it is not either public domain or creative commons friendly there is a very good chance we will delete it. This sticky, the upload page and the FAQ are all pretty clear on this.

There are a couple of reasons. The main one is everything on the site is released under a creative commons license or all rights reserved. Most commercial movies, songs etc aren't compatible with Creative Commons.

The second reason is we have people uploading from all over the world and bearing in mind how murky copyright is we would prefer to be on the safe side.

Best practice is either use sounds you create yourself or grab your samples (and attribute them if you need to) from a source like one of those below.

But yeah! I love the variety however I kind of write chippy stuff by default as all my synths are kinda "chip". I don't think I sound that chip though.
