the last days of the republic

By emily on July 2, 2022 6:38 pm

is this the end?

is this the last days of the republic?

where do we go?

did you all know that tone matrix is a wizard?

so my piece is pretty full of despair & he cast a spell to fight back

i sent him a version of this piece before i added synth-bass & vocals

(which then became the piece i posted here)

he put his magic spell on it & is posting it on his page for week 26

in listening to what he made i was reminded:

“It is not despair, for despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt. We do not.”

“For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien

if you need a little more hope check out "even the very wise cannot see all ends"

(gandolf the pianoman/tonematrix magic spell to fight despair mix)

This had an immediate calming effect on me despite the ever present "despair" smile  The vocals also remind us of that.

tis the sound of austerity itself: humans can use semantics like 'fear' and 'respect', but both darkness and light demand to be heard equally, resounding throughout existence like the cry of life itself(that's what i hear here big_smile)

This is really so good and I am just blown away by how much your skills at production, composition, arrangement, etc have continually grown and developed since I started listening.
This is an admirable soundtrack for the end of an empire.

beautiful. thank you for your music and words.

What a stunning piece. Nice to hear you again, emily. I've been MIA, and have catching up to do.

this track is amazing. it has a magic speed, that effected me. I was slowing down and started reflecting my inner life. triggered by a deep bass or your beautiful synthlines, I drifted away. a precious moment.

I haven't heard tonematrix's version yet but will head there next.  I like how there is both sparseness and lushness on display here often at the same time.  We may very well be nearing the endtimes, but this sounds like ascending to the next level.

I’m actually blown away by the hopefulness of this work. The title’s function therefore reframed the work to something akin to the last track of Pink Floyd’s The Wall: an almost silent whisper about “the ones who really love you” and the “the bleeding hearts and artists make their stand.” Your work I prefer to Pink Floyd, because it’s more punk, for the lack of a better word.

I really like your singing a lot—I think in this case it’s pretty great how the vocals sit in the mix (although, more selfishly than anything because your voice is wonderful, I’d love more Emily’s vocals front and center). smile

In a world full of pirates, time to captain your own ship. I like where yours is going, lovely work.

I'm really sad about what's going on in this country in recent years.

I can see a montage of all the good and bad colliding in this piece.

I liked the drums and appreciated the longer track length

the time in this piece messed with me too - i didn't realize how long it got... it was demanding a slow down for us all this week smile

loved all this - i was not at all sure about the vocals on this... i kinda liked it as an instrumental piece  - so i left the vocals floating neither here nor there - this is sometimes where the week deadline makes a piece hard to fully flesh out... i may work on them some more at some point - i really like the processing tone matrix used on his mix & maybe down the road there will be a combo version? with more upfront vocals  smile

do you know i was named after a Finnish pirate - Emil ?  permission to come aboard friend - not really sure where this ship is sailing but hoping for calmer waters ahead...

there is so much converging right now eh?
it's a lot to keep up with
so nice to see your little avatar face this week heart

This is wonderful.

That was quite the journey on this one, great collab you did with Tone Matrix, wonderful airy vocals.

I don't hear the end in this track... I hear calm resolve and determination that survives the noise and distraction. I like how you weaved in some dissonant lines among the stronger melodious music.  Hints of percussive rhythm sounding ready to burst forth at any moment.  Very well done!

Great quote on despair from Tolkien.  It gives me hope.  That and the fact that your song tile made me think of Star Wars before our actual reality (I guess I'm not too far gone if I can still think like a child).

Please pass along my best to the wizard smile

i totally pondered posting this gif with the piece:

damn - well that was a journey. i could lie down and close my eyes and listen and let go some with this one. thanks for your art. and for everyone's art, and opportunities for collaboration in making ever more art.

On art and words in alignment with Tolkien and other writers (music writers/composers/lyricists):
"Books, you know, they’re not just commodities. The profit motive often is in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art—the art of words." - Ursula K Le Guin

And I don't know who to attribute this quote to, but:
"No groove, no movement"
Keep the music coming

I hear hope in this too. I kind of hear hope wherever I can I think. Love the Tolkien quote. Tone Matrix is a super wizard. Just heard his addition to this. Wow, Love you both!! Thanks for being here and doing what you do. The comments on here say it all.
