When I first got into the tracker workflow, I really enjoyed chopping breaks. There's a ton of unfinished tracks on my M8 that are mainly just chopped drums, just because I find it's so much fun to do. I got back into that flow this week. Did some ground work on saturday, then dragged it over the finish line after a big 6-hour stretch on sunday evening.

This track started out much the same as a lot of those unfinished drumbreak chopping sessions. I took some freshly cut Amen breaks, knocked the tempo up to 175 and started chopping away. Layered them with an Elecronisounds kick and a 909 snare and crash. The main element is an FM bass patch with a bunch of modulators on it that get tweaked throughout the track. M8 only has one ModFX send, so the bass switches the ModFX type to flanger in its table and the kick flips it back to chorus. There's also a hypersynth pad and a simple square lead for the middle part. And some mellower tuned versions of bass and pads for the halftime part.
Most of my time was spent trying to mold the main elements into some kind of coherent shape, which is now the heavy breakcore part of the song. Once that was done I built the lower energy halftime part that functions as the intro, middle and end. There is also some quirky chip lead noodling in the middle, because I guess that's a thing I do in nearly every song now.
Rendered and did some basic mastering in Logic, though it's always hard to judge that kind of thing late at night with tired ears.
All in all I'm pretty happy with this one, even though it could've been longer and more refined in places. The end maybe feels a bit rushed and there's always things to tweak in the mix. But the deadline looms and I really need to sleep. Excited to hear what everyone has been cooking up this week!
Ah shit that half time breakdown is fucking getting me! Soooo good. Chippy doodles at 1:00 are great. Then we're back into DnB madness, juggling those breaks, the bass is coming in hard, mad sliding lead is super cool too. Ah shit that half-time breakdown again!!! Great track!

Whoah man, that was something special. Hard hitting breaks! And looking forward to seeing that chord craziness in the bundle. Your mastering is always on point, but this one really shines.

Neat track! The FM bass is wonderful. I think I would have liked to have it a bit more distortion. To give it another layer of aggressiveness. Or maybe even just a tad louder in the mix would have helped, I think. As to me it's such an assertive sound, but it's kind of politely sitting in the mix. I'd say let that monster of its handle and let it rip. That's of course just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.
I love that little arpeggio flourish in the melodic section. They're wonderful!
The way the track comes together at the end is just excellent. Well done!

The sound design on that bassline is awesome! Thanks for explaining how it came about. I am definitely going to check out the bundle! Very solid track as always.

Ooof the groove between the slick bass and the breaks is just so good! \m/ Love those lil breaks and glitchy bits. Mix sounds great and wouldn't touch a thang! Such a menacing sound! Nice work!

This one feels a little lighter and more airy than your past few. It's not any less nasty or hard-hitting (love the harmonies on that dirty fm patch, drums knock as always). But all the wind-like motion in the sweeps, pads, chip arps, and the especially the noise burst hats in the middle pull it out of bassland. My favorite bits are the fakeout pad swells (like 0:35), the chip solo (Byzantine scale?), and the alien harmonies around 1:42-1:49

Thank you! I think the mastering is a little brighter than my usual, my ears were kinda shot from working on the arrangement. It kinda works for this one haha.
Let me know if you figure out the chords, I have no clue what is happening there

Thank you for the expansive feedback! I agree the bass might be better with a bit more volume. I also could've rendered it and added more distortion, though I kind of try to avoid that on M8. It's fun to try and work within its limitations and have the melodic elements synthesized in realtime. Cheers!

That bassline makes me nostalgic for the hard drive full of pirated music I had in 2009.
Incredible choppage
Awesome, that was the vibe I was going for! Should've rendered it in a super low bitrate mp3 for extra nostalgia

Thank you! This one is a bit more harmonically rich i guess. I've been trying to get out of traditional harmony mindset by writing harmony and solo's mostly by ear. Just plop down a bunch of notes based on feel and see if it makes sense. But looking back I've had a bunch of tracks with a flat 2 in the chordprogression, so it could well be Byzantine here hehe. Thanks for taking the time to do a deeper analysis!
