No Whining

By MRDRCAT on March 29, 2026 10:47 pm

This one is VERY half-baked, since I haven't had time this week - house repairs and other real life getting in the way as usual. It's mostly just an excuse to use some crunchy Casio RZ1 samples. I grunged up some of the sounds using basic tables to introduce errors and other artifacts, but might have gone overboard - it get pretty sloppy. I'm assuming I'll just cannibalise parts of this track for future projects, and if nothing else, I got some new patches out of it. Not my best, but certainly far from my worst, so I'll take it!

Not gonna lie, this is probably one of my favorites so far! Really appreciate the groove here. Never fail to impress! Although you feel it’s half baked, you still cooked! First class!!!

The tone of that main synth line is cool.  The way it bends into note changes is quite satisfying.

Dig the drum groove here.  And are they CZ samples or is there an RZ I don't know about?
And I've had a couple of time poor weeks so I know the feeling!

This is a fun track, grooovy and some Amiga vibes. I like the arrangement.

When something is sloppy, there's really only one thing you can do, which is get more sloppy. For all the slop out there, only humans can really get sloppy. Sloppy is good. Nice job, bud!

Oh I dig this. That bassline is gritty and nasty, and absolutely grooves. I like the artifacting, I don’t think it ever gets out of hand, and I like the grit. Melody line flits over everything in a way that is unmistakably MRDRCAT. And those descending arps at the end! Great track, especially for having to squeeze it in between Real Life events!

Half baked is an understatement, this is medium rare and perfect sounding good job wink

Yay sounds very amiga-tune-ish. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great stuff in here!

Love this! You half-baked protect is a mile better then what i can do lol

Hey, no whining about this being half baked. This soaps!

*This slaps. Damn autocorrect -_-
Although I'm sure it also soaps, whatever that means

Love the drum groove and excellent fills.  The Casio samples sound excellent imho.  Well done!

Jeez this is one of my favorites from you so far for sure!!!

Sounds like cats. I love it!

One of my favorite drum grooves from you, and has a different flavor than the usual MrdrCat Bounce. Bassline is nice and funky, and I really like the phaser/PWM(?) on the bass arps. The high crystal adventure arps in the breakdown definitely need to come back later. And I like the auditory pun of the lead "whining" as it slides across the track

Aww thank you! Maybe I should panic more often to get out of my comfy place!

Oh good - I was worried I overdid it! I mostly did the bends because I didn't have time to fiddle with the envelope and it sounded too same-y.

The RZ1 was an '80s-era drum machine - nothing flashy, but I like the crunchy sound! I can't remember where my samples came from, but there's a free pack or two out there.

Thanks! I should really revisit this one and see if I can refine/expand it. Listening again, it's still a mess but not as much of a lost cause as I thought.

I will embrace the slop. But you know, people-made slop, not machine-made slop. The GOOD slop.

Yay thank you! I'm stoked that I am starting to have something that can be called a style!!

Medium rare is my kind of steak! I'll take it!

You and parappayo mention Amiga. I'm going to have to dig more into Amiga trackers and sounds, because even though I'm a little lukewarm about this track, I kinda dig some of the sounds and wouldn't mind pursuing more like 'em!

Ha ha it's a bit better than I can usually do myself! I was disappointed because I couldn't nail down a specific direction to take it - everything felt like I was trying to hammer a car tyre into a different shape. But taken for what it is...I suppose I'm warming up to it a bit!

YES! "This Soaps" should be a thing. Maybe for a mix that smells nice and fresh? Something sudsy? Or maybe something that smells great but tastes awful when you lick it.
Um....okay maybe not, but I'm still taking it as a compliment!

Thanks! I wanted to play more with the drums, but with the lead doing its thing, keeping everything simpler seemed the best bet (and I ran out of time).

Oh wow thank you! Gotta figure out what I did right. Maybe I should run out of time more often wink

Yeah! Between this one and Hull Breach I've managed to come up with two meowy leads so far this year. I guess artist name checks out?

OMG you totally got the joke! I was indeed referring to the lead. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. I am not really sure what I did for the bass arps, but guaranteed it was an attempt to introduce some variety so it didn't sound so locked-in. There are so many supportive comments on this one I'll have to let it sit a while and revisit it with new ears.

You put that RZ to good use!

I used to own it myself, made a couple of nice tracks but realize now I should have delved deeper. smile
