Wistful for Spring

By Daisy on February 22, 2026 11:23 pm

Last week, here in Wisconsin we had a wonderful 60 degree day. The wind was delicious and made me think that this is spring!!! -- early.  But we are back to winter with the snow and ice and the cutting east wind off Lake Michigan. That east wind can sometimes feel like an iceberg hitting your chest!  However, that day was a wonderful break and I'm ready to finish winter--I think.
I used Violin, Viola, Cello, String bass, flute, and oboe.  I wanted some wind instruments-- because of the wind here near the lake.   I also tried out the col legno effect with the strings on Musescore. Something new!  Col legno is where the player uses the wood of the bow instead of the hair.  It does sound like col legno!  I have played col legno bowing countless times in my playing career, and this is a pretty good example for Midi.  I have a bow I use just for col legno, because it is kind of bad for the bow stick!
Yearning for spring, is a characteristic of us Cheesehead folk.

great melody and very cool technique with the bow. great job!

It's a sentiment I'm sure many share
