Sarabande

By Daisy on September 15, 2024 8:45 pm

This is a Sarabande in G minor. G minor is the saddest of keys. It is often included in a baroque dance suite as an exotic spanish dance, with all the fans and dramatic flourishes of petticoats.  The odd combination of musicians, including a Sackbutt (a predecessor to the modern Trombone) represent who might happen to be present to entertain those thirsty for music and dance.  The Flutes, are Recorders that drip like lace over the intonation of the Sackbutt on the 2-meausure phrases.  The viola and cello provided a legato and pizzicato texture to hide in the corners.
This all came to me in about 30 minutes.  I spent the next hour fixing it up with articulations and dynamics.
Thanks for listening!

and wow, when the viola and cello come in, so dramatic!  yikes
