The Clockwork Fairies

Lore

You've heard that the clockwork fairies have a habit of spellbinding intruders and submitting them to the harshest forced labor conditions imaginable. But you know that won't happen to you! You're coming into their territory, yes, but not to intrude into their land! Heavens, no! You just seek an audience with the Fairy Queen Lynina to deliver an important message from your master, King Reginald Theobald Augustus Kazeer. You do not know the precise contents of the message, but you know the general topic: the King's vision for territorial expansions through the embrace of new disruptive and innovative technologies that significantly reduce the need for human and animal labor. You're sure the clockwork fairies will be most pleased with the news. At least that's what you were told. I mean, they wouldn't have sent you out here if there were any real danger, would they? No, absolutely not. The King is famous for his kindness. He always says he cares for his servants as if they were his own children! There is nothing to fear here. End of story.

Ooohhh, what is that pretty light? It's pulsating... so... nicely... And those bells... They sound... so... soothing.... You feel... blessed...

Production Details

I've done it again: it's another repetitive chiptune march, hahahahaha.... Some aspects of this song feel quite similar to this other song I wrote a few months ago called "Bog Boy Barf", a song about a legendary gator wrestling swamp dwelling adventurer.

I need to send a big thank you to mikey303 who crated an M8 instrument preset called FIREFLIES.M8I, which was central to this piece. I've been trying to create all my M8 synth instruments from scratch for Weekly Beats, but I just couldn't create the exact bell ring I wanted. And then I remembered mikey303 had already created the perfect bell, so I ended up stealing it for my song. I feel like that one and his BITTERSWEET.M8I presets are two that I reach for VERY often. Thanks for making those, Mikey!!!

All other samples were taken from HeXaWe's package of Fairlight samples, which they distribute under the CC BY 3.0 License.

Anyways, since I didn't know where to begin, I started messing around with sound design trying to create some fun and inspiring sound first. After picking a bell sample, I found a cool little pattern and started building up from there.

I started making this track on Thursday evening and hammered most of it out on Friday afternoon. The M8 tells me I worked a total of about 1h45 on this one. As usual, all done on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker.

Also as usual, thank you so much for your incredibly nice comments on my previous (extremely loud) submission, hahahaha...  I'd like to bring two very relevant quotes here:

Dude I can _see_ this tune. I love the contrast between the bells and chippy drums.

Fav'd immediately, I love chimes and bells. I love the fast rhythmic pattern that keeps things tense, and especially the little trill in there. I was expecting the drums to come slightly earlier but the synth is good too. The overall tension, (deep) mystery, and lightness is a perfect match for fairies!!! šŸ˜

This track has lore. Awesome.

Liked the build at the beginning, and absolutely agree that the bells are a great contrast to the chippy drums and leads. I REALLY liked the break at 1:44 when the bells started doing stuff that no bell normally does - "That's just not natural!" Sounded great. Good job!

Love the part that starts at 1:45. Nice work smile

such a tidy track, i love it!
big fan of the bells, and they combine so well with the crunchy beat

Oooo! Bells! At least that's what I thought until I read the lore ... now I'm trapped hahaha! Really cool mix of crunchy drums and the bells and that bell solo just kills! smile

I really like the story to this one and the sounds illustrate it perfectly.  Those are definitely some good bell sounds.

A little sinisterā€¦ for what the bell tollsā€¦?
Those bells seems to work on the theme,
I enjoyed the story of the king! Haha nice work!

This beginning is my favorite. The high bells gives so delicate cold atmosphere and the slow bells give thoughtful tone to tell the story heart

Suitable crunch on the drums gives a nice contrast to the fm bells, nicely done.

It's pretty, the bell is a good sound, even if it doesn't make the most sense in the lore bit, I think.

Love the crunchy drums and that breakdown with the bells in the second half yikes  Awesome melody and progression!

What a wild assortment of instruments in such a composition. This is wild and I enjoyed it a lot.

Fun track, I really love the bell sounds throughout. Particualrly at around 1:50 where the pitches are moving all over, very cool.

Also I medium love that if you Google "King Reginald Theobald Augustus Kazeer", Google returns only two things... this track's page and an archive of "An essay towards a topographical history of the county of Norfolk"
