Patience and Pardons

Happy Week 17! Been kicking around a version of the first verse for a few months and finally rescued it from “unfinished song purgatory” this week. The low, chunky acoustic guitar strumming is very much an Andy Shauf-ism that I really dig. Feeling a bit stuck in my approach to percussion for laid-back songs like this, drums in the last section were added 10 minutes before the cutoff >.>
Incidentally, I had the pleasure of collaborating with the wonderful jwh this week. He wrote a beautiful song and was kind enough to let me contribute some accompaniment. Please check it out along with his other music.
Haven't used this feature before, hopefully the link works: https://weeklybeats.com/jwh/

It’s never gonna go the way you want
Nothing has to change, you’ve forgotten
Though you say it’s true, wouldn’t tell you to
Fear what you can’t see, what you know is true
But say you’ll never leave, I’ll believe you
And if your mind is shut, don’t rough it up
The full picture, swear you see clear
You’ll never have it, I see you grasping
Though I tell you off, it’s not mine to hold
We both could take a share, if I’d be so bold
There must be something left for us to mend
Can you capture what they’re after?
Ask that question, learn that lesson
Hear it starting, patience and pardons
We learn from one another
Humbly study under
Remedy belongs to no one
Empathy and good will growing
Easier said than done
But it takes more than one

I had written a long ramble/rant explaining the lyrics but realized it was low-key turning into a manifesto and I’d better not . This is my expression of the idea that no one person has all the information they need to be the lone authority on something that affects so many people (in this case, education reform). Started as a knee-jerk reaction to some “hot takes” about education in a youtube short (someone please get me off the internet). Ended with the importance of humility in what we don't know and sharing perspectives to get an accurate view and find positive paths forward.
