Patience and Pardons

By Cursory on April 28, 2024 11:56 pm

Happy Week 17! Been kicking around a version of the first verse for a few months and finally rescued it from “unfinished song purgatory” this week. The low, chunky acoustic guitar strumming is very much an Andy Shauf-ism that I really dig. Feeling a bit stuck in my approach to percussion for laid-back songs like this, drums in the last section were added 10 minutes before the cutoff >.>

Incidentally, I had the pleasure of collaborating with the wonderful jwh this week. He wrote a beautiful song and was kind enough to let me contribute some accompaniment. Please check it out along with his other music.

Haven't used this feature before, hopefully the link works: https://weeklybeats.com/jwh/

Regarding note on lyrics - well said. heart
And regarding the song - well played. big_smile
Appreciating and vibing with the message this week. Nice work!

This is just lovely. I came here from the jwh tune y'all did together and this has the same airy quality. Just lovely.

Wonderful lyrics (and vocal processing), as always. I kinda want to read the unpublished manifesto now though...  Lovely track though, great message.

Between you and jwh I'll become a vocalist/lyricist/better guitarist out of pure envy. Just beautiful.

And your percussion is right where it needs to be. Carries the track near the end nicely but I had to specifically listen for it when I read your notes - effective but not interfering or standing out, in something with such beautiful vocals and instrumentation, that's a perfect place for percussion to contribute.

(Trust me there nothing worse in techno than drums that scream OMG NOTICE ME IM DRUMZ)

Wonderful listen as always smile

Well put...Really enjoyed both tracks this week, amazing job!

i'm so glad this one was rescued from purgatory, wow! everything just works together so well and supports the core of the song.

the soundtrack for empathy rescued from purgatorio!
just so kind and lovely

beautiful sounding song.  I too am visiting from JWH's page and really enjoyed what you guys did especially with those guitar line.  Your vocals in this gave me some Bon Iver feels.  Really heartfelt lyrics.  Well done!

Wonderful, just wonderful. No notes, five stars. Gentle, honest, well executed, the subtle drumming across the board fits the mood perfectly. A full song! Your collab with jwh is also stellar. Such a strong week for you!

> There must be something left for us to mend

Thanks for the notes on the lyrics as to me your song was about a relationship growing and maturing. Sort of a different take on the same subject as "Beth/Rest". And doing it with great grace and subtlety, I might add.

I'm a little embarrassed I read romance into lyrics so often, but hey, if the shoe fits!

Wonderful sounding song! Agree with perfect use of drums. Great lyrics, I'm also envious. With you and jwh (Cosmic Cairns and others!) WB is getting a lovely dose of great songwriting this year. Enjoyed your collab with him this week as well. I love your notes on the lyrics. Watch out for the hot takes! 1000% on hummility, being open to perspectives on what we don't know. Made my day, that!

You have an ability to work with the spaces, the timing feels so good. There is air between, and then the words or sounds fill it in the way they do best.

Thanks so much smile Coming up with a track this week was made easier by knowing I already got to piggyback off of your great song haha

Awww shucks, thanks so much. Honestly, I had the same thought that the lyrics sounded almost romantic - this is in part why I felt like explaining a bit about them lol Giving Beth/Rest another listen with closer attention to the lyrics.

Thanks so much, I just listened to your track this week and thought that YOU work with spaces so well!

Gorgeous, I was hooked from the first five seconds and the rest didn't disappoint. Love the melody, the variations in the drums and the lyrics are great as well. Been playing this on repeat.

Aw shucks, thank you so much!

I've been several weeks behind on my listening. I am glad I went back and that this made it out of purgatory. This track is a stand out. Always good to hear a new Cursory track.

Love the lyrics and the the note on the lyrics too. Having spent some time in the classroom I totally get it. A lot of people have a lot of takes about education but are misguided. It's easy to get mad (and sometimes rightfully so) but it's harder and perhaps better to be empathetic to seek out solutions. It was one of the reasons I got out of education when I was younger, I struggled to balance that experience. Now that I am older with a bit more perspective, I have been thinking about giving another try with a different approach.

My comment from the colab song big_smile

Both top tier singer song writers.

You are far too kind! Thank you so much for listening and sharing so many thoughtful comments smile Glad some things resonated with you as a former educator as well.

Jwh's song is sooo good as usual haha. I can't speak for him, but I know I would struggle immensely trying to make music with an M8 or the other tools you use to such great effect. I think everyone gets to be talented in their way, and also we get to learn/improve. I was told I was had talent as a young kid learning piano and I'm not sure it did me any favors lol Listening back to your W16, I don't doubt that the singer/songwriter stuff is both another talent you have and something you've previously fostered smile

A great message, and suitable for music as well I'd imagine. Very sweet sounds.

Thank you! And I think so, I suppose in any field there's value in humility and learning from others.
