Mutton Chops M8

By cTrix on January 4, 2026 4:25 pm

Hey everyone!   WHY ARE WE DOING THIS AGAIN?!!  (aka. Welcome WB2026)

So in past 2 years I've noodled a lot on the M8 and also played a lot of drums!  So I've combined these two to kick off 2026: a Roland electronic kit (in a study nook) and the M8 sequencer.

I gave myself a limit of 4 hours to compose the music side on the M8 (drumless) and then : LIVE DRUMS!!

Straight outta the drum brain headphone socket into a Zoom recorder.  About 4 or 5 takes played along to the M8 and then I picked the best moments.  I did some stuuuupid 32nd fills in this (hahaha) but a lot of it is double sticking the bouncy V-Drum heads... if you know, you know ;-)  The mastering is simply Limitor No6 shoved on the whole mix to glue it together.  No other EQ or processing (although I'm using OTT on the M8).

So, what you all been up to?  Big love & see ya on the discord!  We back for 2026.  heart

kickin' it off right stanky.

this is insanely cool! you are a legend, bro!

yeaa buddy you know i luv a livedrum!  glad you've been having opportunities to flex your drum chops.  this holds up super well as always!  (btw when we get to Melb we deffo should rent a jam room with whoever else wants to noodle around)

that sure is some funk. I really want you to do a game soundtrack someday!

Bloody hell, this is neck-snapping levels of funk. Hell yeah. Hell yeah.

Oh yeah all about this Doskpop Funk! The live drummin’ brings it whole other level

yooo sick!!!

Oh hell yeah this rules. Just picked up a little bebop kit and had been thinking to do the same! Very inspiring.

heeeelllll yeah! There are some supertasty fills in here and some grade-A M8 funk programming.

happy WB 26! heck yeah sloppy synth is always good!

Bear with me for a sec. Your bass sound is not my cup of tea. Not a fan of what it is doing, either. And that would be reason enough to skip your track. In fact, I nearly did. But I hopped around in file and heard enough different things that I liked. So your tune got another chance. And I'm glad it did. It is wonderfully chaotic and wild. Like it's bursting with energy. Well done! I enjoyed this!

that bass is so frog music it's sloppy as hell heart

Excellent recording and mixing on those drums. And playing, ofc. Looking forward to some Ctrix crazyness this year wink

Monodeer borrowed me his v1 M8. Very inspiring to hear what everyone here has done with it. Hope to get a track out with it as well.

woahhh this is so cool!!

That bass is fonky!

I came to comment on the timbre of that filthy bass, then paid attention to the drums...

Live drums sound crazy. How the hell do you make it sound like one giant fill but still keep time?

Man, you are the Steely Dan of Weekly Beats. Loving those chord changes !!!

Welcome back, man!!! So glad you're here one more year

love that crunchy bass and stabby synth big_smile welcome back!

absolutely banging
i'm boppin over here

amazing drumming

This combo puts the FUN in funky! almost a bit of Alexander Brandon vibes.
Lovely!

yo. excellent playing. felt the groove from the first moment. really interesting to imagine how you composed on the m8, for me it's hell to make phrases longer than a bar on it, cause of the constant switching. much more comfortable playing smth live altho it's never perfectly on time. anyway great grooves in this track, v funky. I guess one of the keys to making it this funky is to syncopate things a lot, and having a solid groove at the core around which to mess around with variations.

i've been playing a lot with a drummer and thinking about groove the past year so im def up for geeking on this. very cool rhythmic ideas around 3min. like vamp + drum solo/fills. one of the coolest things, esp when doing it live. would love to jam w you sometime!

love the unison lines going up starting around 1:45, behind which u go ham on the drums.

WELCOME BACK! GREAT TO HAVE U

Ohhhh, nice, some nice jazz chording going on here. Is that multiple channels of notes, or are you doing hypersyn trickery here?

Small wonder you're a master of the M8. In your hands it sounds like we nostalgically think the Amiga sounded in the 1990s. But of course it's super hi-fi and the polyphony allows much more breathing room. Love how you're making the bass the musical start of the show. It's like one of those jazz bands where the bassist is the leader and it's clear to everyone. Even though the other musicians are also on top of their game.

Like the drummer here. That guy's really good! And the way the drumming never repeats transforms the track. The entire song feels so human and authentic. And none of your complaining about an ass mix will convince us. Not only is the M8 a tiny DAW in a box now with its EQ and compression capabilities, but your minimal Reaper mix blends it very well with the drums.

I was happy to see your submission this week. I'm even happier now after hearing it. Good shit, no notes, five stars.

So gooood. That crunchy chord progression is *chef's kiss*

Ooof! Feel that bass groove immediately.  But then the synth leads just add to it even more.  Head_nods all over! Love the chord progression as it takes off with the slick drums.  Got me wipin da sweat off my head listening to this gem.  Oh the breakdown is especially appreciated.  Like I just burst through the cloud tops and can see my house.  The drums are so good.  You got chops! \m/

dang how'd you get it so blorpin

Great work! Interesting approach to skip drums on the M8 and do them live afterwards, the opposite of what I typically do. I'll have to try that. Love the chord rhythms too.

Oh man the live drums responding to the loose jam feel of the synths, the chimes, the chords...so slick. I would never guess this is one person. It sounds like the effortless fun had by a band that's played together for years.

This is awesome. The M8 component is just a fantastic groove but there is way more to the "glue" here than a limiter, all the parts really came together and sound like they're in the same space, its awesome heart welcome back!

I'am elecrtofunked now

funky! hot damn, this is mighty impressive

funky!

I can't even write my name in 4 hours. Crazy stuff

yes yes love this !!  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the drumming is quite wonderful!!! wish i had an electric kit, been many years since i had the chance 2 play...

Shiiit, that is some solid drumming. I should practice now... Lol.

The rest of the composition is very nice as well, really like the bass.

Well played!

It feels like it could be a Final Fight 3 OST track, played live heart heart heart

Awesome track!! Love the jazzy harmonics, it really keeps going and never falls flat!

queue the work freeze, popped into the headphones, what a banger, locked in!

Fellow drummer, nice chops! Great chord progression, I'm not a theory wizard, but what felt like a key change a third of the way through was a nice touch.

Funky! dang that bass sounds clean and dirty at the same time. love the vibe of this! synths were great and fit so well

Gotta have the funk! Love that you played the drums live on a Roland kit. Impressive.

I had v-drums way back and took some lessons but didn’t practice enough. One night I drunkenly committed to buying a couple of Moog synths off someone on Craigslist .. and my lady made me sell the drums to help offset the cost. Oops.

What a weapon!

Drums really bring it to life, and the breakdown in the middle hits the spot

starting the year on a high smile. The whole track is a banger.

Dang this is an awesome track, nostalgic but also modern

We back, babyyyyyy!!!! This sounds awesome, dude. Funky and stanky, just how I like it, hahaahaha...

Man, love to hear some more cTrix this year. Started out with great groovyness

Already listened on the M8 discord and almost forgot leaving a comment here. You composed the whole thing in 4hrs?? That's crazy to me, just like the idea of drumming along for 5 takes and ending up with something this coherent. Sounds like way more time must've been invested just to get the arrangement down like that. Also loving the bass breakdown at 1:42. Looking forward to more!

DUDE ARE WE PLAYING DRUMS?!?!?!?!?!?

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MENTAL!

The immediate stank face that happened when this track started.  This is so good!  So grateful you are back!

wow, your fills are great - kick doubles are HOT

really impressed with your playing - chord changes are out of control awesome, but I expect nothing else from you!  happy new year buddy heart

Dirty midi funk with some live drums, always a fun time with cTrix in the house

So funky and bouncy! That's some solid drumming skills. Awesome work 😎

happy new year cTrix!
here we go again!

WJDHGAYUFYS this is funkalicious and vibey af!!! <333 drums and sound design go crazyyyy

Very tasty jam.

It was strange making a tun without the drums and then adding them in after and hearing it for the first time only while I was playing along to the M8.

note! wrote:

Oh that's right!  I forgot you were also a drummer too big_smile   Highly recommend - it's a lot of fun.  I find I do a version of the tune with some simple percussion (hats or similar) to play along to instead of a click,  but then usually keep that line it in, just turned down in the mix.

roboctopus wrote:

I did my best.  There were also some out of control moments where I stuffed up the fills but left them for entertainments sake!

Certainly takes a journey.  A lot of it is because of stacking multiple Hypersynths with oddly semi-clashing inversions then taking out an offending not or too, but being left with this very stacked chords I wouldn't normally come up with.

Starting with a bassline is a bit of thing I often do!  It's usually where a song starts for me.

Cheers!  Yeah, the M8 - or tracking in general - is something I've just done for so long that I find it easy to get melodic in it.  Although I make totally different tunes in it compared to using piano roll (this weeks tune is piano roll and very different vibe).

antler wrote:

2 x Channels of Hypersyn in most places.  I'm also using the Braids stacked chord synth too in places.  I generally do one with a 5th, one with a 4th and you can do minor 7ths and major sus chords if you use 2 x channels.

Hahaha.  Thanks mate.  Appreciate it.  Yeah, starting with the bass is often just how I compose.  (did the same this week).  Part of the fun of fusion stuff is you can play drums with endless variation ;-)  Doing it live keeps it non-repetative too.

It's fun.  I do a simple percussion line to follow along to rather than a click, then turn it down in the mix at the end.  Helps keep groove rather than just a click.

Get back into it!  I hadn't played since I was 18 and got a $100 "KAT" kit designed for kids to learn on.  Super cheap.  After a few months with that (to confirm I would play it) I grabbed the Roland VQD and they are dead quiet for appartments, etc.  As long as you don't have wooden floors!

Nah, I really do not like to "practice"... I'll try to put a bit more time recording or playing with my friends but really I don't like to work on my chops - play over tracks (depending on the tracks, especially if you can find a drumless version it can be a bit of fun, but I am not pulled into doing that at the moment...).

carcus wrote:

Awesome!  It's more of a series of modal changes than anything - switching between minor and major modes AFAIK.

It's got a lot of inspiration from the 70s funk / fusion stuff.  I guess the very digital nature of the synth engines makes it sound modern.
