Sleep Traveler

By Cosmic Cairns on January 25, 2024 7:29 pm

I'm finally feeling better and thought I'd get around to doing something with some vocals.  It's been over a year since I've written lyrics and I was blanking a bit about what to write about.  I kind of stumbled on a weird idea about falling asleep in your bed and then waking up somewhere completely unexpected.  This isn't something that generally ever happens to me, but it seemed like something to focus in on to spark something.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I came awake face down in a lake
I'm glad that I learned how to swim
I don't recall going there at all
Seems like I'm sleep traveling again

You never know where you might go next
It's an adventure every time you lay down

I ran a race came in second place
I just woke up at the finish line
Accepted the prize rubbing sleep out of my eyes
And squinting in the bright sunshine

I thought I'd head right back to bed
I sure hope I'm still there when I wake up

"I sure hope I'm still there when I wake up" are great lyrics to close this on. Super fun jam!!! You clearly have a knack for lyrics, these are awesome smile

your voice is sounding great! congrats on a smooth recovery smile
i love the raw feel of this, and the lyrics are delivered short and sweet as if in a perfectly empathic way... also love the guitar solo part with sparkling synth stabs(they're like the sound of strobing-spotlights highlighting the smoke coming off the guitar big_smile), excellent song!

That guitar intro reminded me of the Smashing Pumpkins for some reason, though your singing took us into a different direction. This is a fun, heavier track than your usual sound but it also works. Fuzz is always good!

Haha fun idea! It could be taken as a metaphorical interpretation of dreaming, which I think is what I would have gotten without reading the intro.

Glad you're feeling better. Nice one! Keep it up

Beauty! Chunky guitars yeah. It's awesome to hear your voice again!
Nice work bud

Heavy tones this week!

I quite like that. smile

Gritty and thick guitar sound!  Your vocals are a nice contrast to keep the balance.  Excellent guitar solo with the synth at the end too.  Glad you're feelin better smile

Glad your feeling better, every time I wake up I wonder what the hell is this place.

More of this, please.

love the Brian Wilson / Elephant 6 feel to the melody. please do not sleep in the lake, CosmicCairns!  smile

wow! This is great... I really dig that Velvet Underground/Reed vibe of the arrangement. A great lyric too smile

Nice one, love these lyrics! This flows along well. The fuzziness sounds great all over. Waking up in strange places sounds fun, but probably very scary. Sometimes after dreaming, waking up in bed is strange at first too. I"m going to go to sleep now and hopefully wake when the work day is over.

The sound on this is so great! Love the contrast of the rawness in sound with the sweetness of the vocal performance.

Thanks!  My other creative outlet is writing stories and while it's a bit of a different beast than writing lyrics, I think there's a little crossover there.

Thanks!  I was still slightly congested when I recorded this and I wasn't sure how it was going to affect my voice, but it seemed like it actually came out okay.

I agree, I like fuzz.  I think I want to play around with it a bit more this year.

Good point!  In my mind I was being literal, but if you want to think of it as being about dreaming, I'd say that's a valid interpretation as well.

Been awhile since I've sang actually.  Good to get back to it!

Yeah, I like it, too.  I'll definitely have to do a few more tracks in this vein this year.

Thanks!  I liked how the guitars turned out on this one.  Will have to play a little more with this sort of sound this year.

  It's a good question.  It's a weird world.

Thanks!  I'm hoping to explore this style a bit more this year.

I'm a big fan of both Brian Wilson and Elephant 6 so I will happily take the comparison.  Sleeping in lakes is definitely not on my agenda.

Thanks!  Yeah, I can hear a bit of that Velvet Underground feel to this.  I always liked their sound.  I don't have a viola, but I'll have to work in some crazy cellos on something like this.

I think I would probably freak out if I actually woke up somewhere and had no idea how I got there.  Luckily I don't seem to be a sleepwalker or anything like that.

Thanks!  I think sometimes contrasts like that can be really interesting.  Maybe I'll have to try pairing some soothing music with some screamo vocals.  smile

So much fun to listen to your lyrics. The way you sing the melodies is unique and intensify the narrative. I find this grungy sandpapersound fits very well. Thank you very much and good you have your voice back.

fuzzy fuzzy fuzzy.  It moves slow, like a slow-motion dream.  But never stops, keeps chugging along, pushing forward, like the race you're running.  I like how the lyrics and music mesh together, even if they were created separate and put together.  cool song.

love the fuzz noise folk punk

welcome back to your voice!  great lyrics and singing:)

Fuzz noise folk punk sounds like a genre I would definitely be interested in.

fixed that for ya wink

made me think of that scene in "Splash" where Tom Hanks wakes up saved on the beach smile

Awesome, love your instrumental stuff but your voice definitely completes your sound.

Guitar tone is sick, it sounds surprisingly great in a folk-ish song setting too.

Thanks!  It will be good to get back to some more lyric writing.  I was feeling a bit out of practice, but I'm sure it'll come to me.  I also think I want to play with some more distortion sounds this year for sure.

Thanks!  I think maybe it was more of a marathon type race than a sprint.

Oh yeah.  It's been forever since I've seen Splash, but that looks about right.

Thanks!  I liked how the distorted guitar came out on this one.  Will definitely have to try something similar soon.

The highest power gives his biggest naps to his sleepiest warriors. Great lyrics.
Love this, what can you tell us about the guitar, it's like distorted acoustic?

Yeah on the guitar.  I was just kind of messing around and ran two acoustic guitar tracks through two different distortion settings and was pleasantly surprised by how it sounded so I went with it.
