Night Sox

By Cosmic Cairns on April 25, 2024 12:37 am

I found a scrap of paper in my front yard recently, and when I picked it up I discovered it had the words "Night Sox" written on it in black magic marker.  I don't know what that means, but I took it as some sort of message from the universe that I should give that title to a song this year.

I'm doing another instrumental this week because I've been working some weird hours and my brain feels too fried right now to write lyrics.  I used the title to steer me towards what I thought sounded like some late night sounds.

Hahahaha, I love the night sox story =P
and indeed, this does have night time vibes to it. On point! smile
I also really like the steady percussion, sounds a bit like a marching band making sure everything is in its correct place before going to sleep. Nice job!

great vibe! Dig the backward elements, great melodies. Agree the steady percussion really holds it down

I recently found a Dear John letter (or John Deere letter if you're a Dumb and Dumber fan) and I'm kicking myself that I didn't keep it and make a song out of it.

But yeah, Night Sox is a perfect name for this very awesome track. Giving this one a few listens!

very nightly track! Please do not think less of your instrumental stuff, I find it very compelling and original. The actual songs tend to work always better if there´s enough instrumental ideas giving the contrast. I think that one of the problems of the pop music today is the overlooking the mood bits. Usually it is vocals/lyrics right from the start to the end. I prefer more varied dynamics. Great stuff, again...

magic!

Dang it, that was my shopping list and I bought Day Sox but I FORGOT my Night Sox!  #$@#^&@!!

The instrumental actually lends itself to the night time feel, if that makes sense.

I really like the HONK HONK HONK that's almost like a toy car horn?

I wonder what would happen if you removed the hi-hat.  Not good or bad; just curious

Hmmm night sox maybe it's a softball league and the night sox are down a second baseman!?  This def has some moonlit marching vibes.  Like you're on a quest smile

That's a magic track. I like the "hey hey hey" like sounds. The revert sounds at the end are really nice too, feeling magical. And bonus points for the backstory of the track title! smile

Sounding innocent and joyful. I like it.

I can see the night sox now. I think they are fairy like creatures that dance around at night to this song. Sometimes they leave notes. That's amazing you found one. I'm going to go look for notes in my yard now. Love this melody. I hear you on fry brain, hope your hours get less weird soon!

makes me think of the days spent just swinging in a tire swing watching the world go round without a worry in the world, very nice.

Thanks!  I like the idea of a band marching you off to sleep.

Thanks!  I always have a soft spot for backwards sounds and they seemed to fit well here.

That does sound like it would make good song material.  I'm always on the lookout for random things like that to utilize.

Thanks for mentioning about the instrumental stuff.  I certainly don't mean to imply it's lesser or anything.  I like instrumentals a lot and I totally agree that pop music doesn't spend enough time on that part of music.  I think I just feel a little apologetic because sometimes in the past here on WB when I've done a few instrumentals in a row I've had some comments (meant in a nice way) asking when I would do a track with some vocals again.  Also some weeks trying to come up with lyrics just feels like an extra layer of work that I don't feel up to.

The honk sound is a toy megaphone, so pretty close!  Interesting observation on the hi-hat.  Maybe I'll try a mix without it just to see what it sounds like.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking baseball somehow since that's really the only context I've seen "Sox" used in.  I also like the image of the moonlit marching quest.

Thanks!  It felt like the various elements came together pretty well.  I don't always have an interesting back story to a song, but I like when there is one.

Thanks!  Could always use a little more joy and innocence.

I think you've figured out exactly what the night sox are.  My work hours are always a little weird, but they were at least consistent and predictable for a long time. They haven't been either one of those things lately and that really throws me off.
